When results from preseason friendlies are discussed, I always think back to Sachsen Leipzig. 24 years ago, Martin O’Neill took his new Celtic team to face the fourth-tier German club, fielded a team with Sutton, Larsson, Mjallby, Stubbs, Lambert, Petrov, Moravcik and Boyd, and lost 2-0.
Problem was, we also had Rafael and Tebily in a disjointed team which included a young trialist called Thomas Hitzlsperger, who did not sufficiently impress to win a Celtic contract, but would subsequently become a mainstay of the German national team.
Preseason is not about winning games, but losing them can still smart, ask anyone who saw West Ham at Celtic Park three years ago. So with all those caveats acknowledged, the goals scored against Manchester City overnight were encouraging. Nicolas Khun in particular appears to be growing into his role at Celtic. We missed a really commanding winger last season, let’s hope Nicolas can deliver this term.
Martin O’Neill rapidly recovered from that loss in Germany and led Celtic to their first treble in 33 years that season. There was no Sachsen Redemption, though. The Leipzig club went into liquidation in 2011. Kids, liquidation of football clubs was more common than you’d think, back then.

Really hoping for max coefficient for all Scottish teams this season.
For rangers qualifying for knock outs via Europa League. For Celtic the same in CL and for Hertz and maybe even Killie and St Mirren at least group stages of Conf L with 3 wins between them.
Only this kind of performance can get us in CL guaranteed slot from 26/7 again.
Shipbank Shipwrecks meeting this Friday at the Old Ship Bank, 12pm onwards

How are you Big Jimmy?
Yes, wee Greg has been an excellent player for a few seasons now.
HH
Re above
Rangers has carried us in Europe for too long and this won’t continue. 4 or 5 countries now breathing down our necks even to stay where we are which is currently no longer a guaranteed champion country for CL from next year.
Burnley78 – yip.

For those interested ……
…. select “Country Ranking” from options along the top.
You can then skip forward and back by year to see a country’s historical and projected rankings.
Over next three years Scotland is losing three decent years’ points in a row
– 19/20
– 20/21
– 21/22
Season after next (25/26) is a scunner.
Czech Republic beat us to automatic CL qualification by a whisker.
Aberdeen’s late capitulation to PAOK (below) was the kicker.

Seems like the Olympics has already started, football and rugby sevens at any rate.
Fitba is U23s and dont think the Brits qualified this time around. Rugby 7s might be more interesting and for those who are, Ireland play South Africa at 4.30pm on BBCi player (Sports).

Helluva sport on a full size pitch. Ireland resplendant in all green, South Africa once again have went for the modern look …….disaster
BRRB,
As a wean, I often played fit a with John Kelly, whose family lived above the Prince Charlie. We used to play in the spare grun behind the Hall, which was used as part of The old St Michael’s Primary School in Salamanca Street.
By the way, I agree with those who feel the BBC has dumbed down, especially the News. I’ve stopped watching Newsnight. Sad.

I think Jermaine Defoe wants the R2ngers manager job.
saint stivs
Cannot see any sign of a GB Mens Rugby 7s team, maybe didn’t qualify, there is a Women’s 7s, mainly English.
So Ireland flying the flag for these Isles, 5-0 up at H/T
Seems we’re getting more money from US Tour, than for winning League and Cup
Ireland won 10-5
S.A. down to six men for a couple of minutes.
Think they were hard done by there, seemed a fair tackle to me,
then again I wasn’t on the wrong end of it
10-5 Ireland F/T
Parkheadcumsalford 4.36
Great memories for you and all of the older Celts on here, including me. I love to read posts of the old days. Keep em coming 👍
BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL @ 2:42 PM,
Aberdeen were robbed in the POAK game, too dodgy penalty decisions among others changed the match – Aberdeen should have won it.
Hail Hail

Morocco 2 Argentina 1
Still not finished though three minutes still to go
Game started at 2pm
BRRB….
Yeah… Great choon, phenomenal band…
Hail Hail
Argentina got an equaliser to make it 2-2 followed by missiles being thrown on the pitch,
Referee stops play in O/T clears everybody out of the stadium (that will never catch on)
One hour later game restarts VAR rules out that goal (that might) and Morocco hold out for 2-1 victory.
Dont know which songs will be sung after the game this time around…..
‘Dont Cry For Me Argentina’ might not go down too well
many times over the last several years, people on here have mentioned the state of poundland’s stadium. what are they doing?
Dying a slow death hopefully….

Outstanding Bada! Cheers pal. 😃👍🍀🇮🇪⚽️
Know it’s only a pre-season friendly, but we looked sharp, played some great attacking football and Kuhn looks a player. Quick, direct, good on the ball and composed in front of goal.
Kyogo took his goal well. What a ball from Khun.
Oscar Bobb will be a player for City in the years to come. Looked class.
Does beating Man City mean we win the much coveted Pre-Season Cup ?
On another note, we are still celebrating Clare winning the hurling All Ireland.
C’mon the Banner 💛💙
can only be incompetence BD – basic checking of shi*/ the boring crap/ meetings, reports , employees who are a pain in the hole but who are essential to getting the unglamorous stuff done.
Not to mention costing them money they don’t have. useless.
