Sachsen Redemption

151

When results from preseason friendlies are discussed, I always think back to Sachsen Leipzig.  24 years ago, Martin O’Neill took his new Celtic team to face the fourth-tier German club, fielded a team with Sutton, Larsson, Mjallby, Stubbs, Lambert, Petrov, Moravcik and Boyd, and lost 2-0.

Problem was, we also had Rafael and Tebily in a disjointed team which included a young trialist called Thomas Hitzlsperger, who did not sufficiently impress to win a Celtic contract, but would subsequently become a mainstay of the German national team.

Preseason is not about winning games, but losing them can still smart, ask anyone who saw West Ham at Celtic Park three years ago.  So with all those caveats acknowledged, the goals scored against Manchester City overnight were encouraging.  Nicolas Khun in particular appears to be growing into his role at Celtic.  We missed a really commanding winger last season, let’s hope Nicolas can deliver this term.

Martin O’Neill rapidly recovered from that loss in Germany and led Celtic to their first treble in 33 years that season.  There was no Sachsen Redemption, though.  The Leipzig club went into liquidation in 2011.  Kids, liquidation of football clubs was more common than you’d think, back then.

“Why is Israel still allowed to participate?”

Because the Zionist tentacles are everywhere…plus the fear of being labelled anti-semitic.

Aberdeen were robbed in the POAK game, too dodgy penalty decisions among others changed the match – Aberdeen should have won it.

    Cheers CB.

When that game went to 2-2 (PAOK equaliser) the Dons crumbled.

I was willing them to hold on.

Perhaps unfair of me to pin the coefficient situation on Aberdeen.

It was a painful last minute goal – but the Dons get a pass from me when it comes to having a go in Europe.

Other clubs have let the nation down.

    Am not suggesting anything extravagant.

Get to the group stage and just go for it.

Bordeaux FC ‘relegated’ to the third division in France but close to ‘extinction’ with another new plan to get out of administration. £100M in debt with not a cat in hells chance of paying it back, sounds familiar? – might need to phone Neil Doncaster about starting again as Le Bordeaux.

*disnae make sense, no NOT your comment WBC, but the concept as Semitic means “relating to, or constituting a subfamily of the Afro-Asiatic language family that includes Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and Amharic”

    TT…correct!

    Semite definition…

“a member of any of the peoples who speak or spoke a Semitic language, including in particular the Jews and Arabs.”

    ————–

Rangers have received “a concrete offer” for defender and vice-captain Connor Goldson, manager Philippe Clement has said.

Clement did not identify the bidding club but confirmed the 31-year-old had left the squad prior to Wednesday’s friendly at Birmingham City to hold talks with his prospective suitors.

  12. Many scoffed when Chris Davies was mentioned as the steel behind Brendan first time around. Delighted to see the guy taking his chance and making a good start tonight with Birmingham.

Low level opposition mind you. They look terrible.

  13. Obviously our victories and their defeats in ore season will mean nothing next May but still, it’s fun to hear about them getting booed off at half time so soon to the start of their season.

From Rangers Media: “The camera obstruction is turning out to be the highlight of this half”

  14. Rodgers has got the team passing the ball with authority and taking up strong positions in the box. What he hasn’t done, yet, is stopping teams from creating chances. Our left back area is pathetic really from a defensive perspective. Central midfield needs areal dominance since ccv and scales are weak with cross balls (.exposed in Scottish football). Dara O’Shea is only 6’1. With the money we have SURELY we can get those positions upgraded. Strikers, wingers, playmakers will always come and go at Celtic (it’s our culture to buy attackers) – time for some athletic defenders !!

How much concrete are the hun getting for Goldson?

  16. Before that game started, Sevco were odds on favourites. They are now 14/1 !

    Birmingham are 1/4 .

  17. Next stadium on the tour

Norte Dame Fighting Irish football team 🤔😂☘️

Notre Dame Stadium is an outdoor football stadium in Notre Dame, Indiana, the home field of the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team.

It was built in 1930 under the guidance of Knute Rockne, regarded as one of the greatest coaches in college football history, which gave rise to the stadium’s nickname “The House that Rockne Built”. Prior to the stadium’s construction, the Fighting Irish played in Cartier Field. The stadium seating capacity was nearly 60,000 for decades, until a major renovation between 1994 and 1997 added an upper bowl and more than 20,000 additional seats, which increased the capacity to over 80,000. In 2014, the Campus Crossroads renovation decreased the seats to 77,622. The stadium has sold out regularly for home games since 1964.

It is one of the oldest, most recognizable and iconic venues in college football. It is also famous for its view of the Touchdown Jesus mural. The playing surface was changed to artificial turf in 2014, after 84 seasons on natural grass. The playing field has a conventional north–south alignment at an approximate elevation of 732 feet (223 m) above sea level.[2]

  18. This one made me smile 😃

Hoping for back row of the West Stand when we get to Hampden. Closer to the exits and no chance of seeing the game.

  19. Just saw this on a Brummy Supporters site:

” Surprisingly, despite it being a pre-season, there were some sections of the Rangers fans that booed their team’s performance.”

    Not surprising to us !
