When results from preseason friendlies are discussed, I always think back to Sachsen Leipzig. 24 years ago, Martin O’Neill took his new Celtic team to face the fourth-tier German club, fielded a team with Sutton, Larsson, Mjallby, Stubbs, Lambert, Petrov, Moravcik and Boyd, and lost 2-0.
Problem was, we also had Rafael and Tebily in a disjointed team which included a young trialist called Thomas Hitzlsperger, who did not sufficiently impress to win a Celtic contract, but would subsequently become a mainstay of the German national team.
Preseason is not about winning games, but losing them can still smart, ask anyone who saw West Ham at Celtic Park three years ago. So with all those caveats acknowledged, the goals scored against Manchester City overnight were encouraging. Nicolas Khun in particular appears to be growing into his role at Celtic. We missed a really commanding winger last season, let’s hope Nicolas can deliver this term.
Martin O’Neill rapidly recovered from that loss in Germany and led Celtic to their first treble in 33 years that season. There was no Sachsen Redemption, though. The Leipzig club went into liquidation in 2011. Kids, liquidation of football clubs was more common than you’d think, back then.

Clement has just revealed that Todd Cantwell has asked to leave the club.
Barbie asks for a transfer
It’s all great fun laughing at them,I love it myself….but let’s face it…no Celtic board is going to invest in players when our city rivals are in such a weakened state…

unfortunately i think that has been the case for a while.
it is PLCism at work.
but they wont admit that obviously, though i would have more respect for them if they did admit it.
but then they would have to try justify 600 quid season tickets just to finish a few point above the Hun, and also justify 200 quid champions league tickets if we havent signed enough players to make us even remotely competitive in it.
they just want the money rolling in – and stayng there.
but there is still a while to go until the transfer window slams shut (hate that noise…) and brendan seems to think we will have players in, and out.
so lets see.

Scott Wright is now a target for sumdae.
Norwich couldn’t get shot of Barbie for 18 months, before the Gullabillies stepped in,could be same problem as he’s on silly money
Have they not suffered enough
Barbie’s main problem wasnt that he was pish up here.
it was that he was pish while acting johnny big bollocks as if he was too good for the league.
we have seen that sort of shite before (joey barton etc)
if you come up to scotland and disrespect everyone else in the league you will get shown up.
and he did.
but its funny how the huns lap up the loudmouth shite from these players but seem to ignore how pish they are on the park.
marvellous!

Never interrupt your enemy when he’s making a mistake – a shower of shites, manipulated by a shower of shites.
I had a bit of a slow start this morning, more about too much partying than too much drink last night, but Bull McCabe’s pub in Durham, followed by the game in Chapel Hill, was a blast.
I would have taken the first goal, so a 4-3 victory and good performance were icing on the cake.
Flying to Chicago tomorrow and looking forward to catching up with Aipple, MNCelt and Tobago St at Notre Dame on Saturday – will wear my Philly 2012 Broonie shirt for the game, to see off the 2024 tour.
Mon the hoops!

Good morning all from a 16 degree and dry Garngad.
TexasTim – Enjoy, sounds great.

Good morning all from Govanhill.
On this day
not many eyebrows were raised when Celtic boss Wim Jansen paid a relative pittance (£650,000) for a Swedish player by the name of Henrik Larsson.

He’ll never amount to much. 😉

Genuine question : Does anyone know if Celtic have a reciprocal agreement with R2ngers for the introduction of secure segregation measures to cater for more spectators?
Clearly Celtic have to move quicker – we host a Glasgow derby in September.
R2ngers might have had a more relaxed schedule in mind but (I’m guessing here) that could now be in doubt while they fund and resource the delays to Copland road refurb.
That often used phrase
Well it is not the managers own team he inherited the last managers players.
Clement will have nobody left.
It will be his own team.
He will be gone by Christmas.
Who is the most improtant person in Celtic’s history do we think since 1888 ?
important *
When the media start calling him plain ordinary Philip Clement , instead of phileep claymoooont he’ll be on his way out.
then they will call him fullof claymoans..😉😁
Good morning all from the Queens Park Cafe. The day before the Shipbank and all is still….

A good debate instigating question but maybe impossible to answer as we don`t really know enough about the history before any of us was born.
In my time, I would suggest Fergus McCann.
Not popular, I know but his impact was immense.
Talking of `immense impact`. Jock Stein must be considered.
Can I have two ? :-))
Back in an hour or so.
Cheerio for now.
God bless The Bunnet
Brother walfrid or why he did it

Jock.
By a country mile.
the greatest figure in the history of the club is simply the founder Brother Walfrid, Andrew Kearns.
his ambition, that a football club could alleviate conditions for the poor in his parishes and allow for chidren to be fed and attend school while continuing in their own religion.
Sharing that vision with Brother Doretheus, and the others in the teaching order and the diocese.
Pulling together his former pupils who are doing well, sharing his vision, to a point where he mobilises those founding father lights a fire of interest, they then execute on his needs.
Literally dozens of Irish clubs failed. Amongst them Hibernian.
glass and McLughlins abilities to get Kelly , McCallum, Madden et al, and TO GET THEM TO STAY, for those initial years and seasons, that in itself is a minor miracle.
The construction of not 1 but 2 Celtic Parks. Financed by the members contributions and the volunteers muscle.
No Kelly no Keltic, but like everyone that followed, a bit player in the history, no matter how succesful it was and how long it might be.
Those early Celts, not owners, not for their own pockets, well not for some years yet. They are in it together, and survuve they must because it is feeding the children of the east end, and numorous charities beyond the city.
Since then, maybe 50 more seriously high contributors, but they are owners, players , managers, all with vested interests, but none in my humble opinion mean as much as BROTHER WALFRID did.
oh and Peter Lawwell.
Jack McGinn and the Malcontents
Jock Stein by a million miles!

Jock Stein by a million miles!
aye i’ll go for that!
Wayne Biggins.
And on the 8th day God made a couple of signings
and they were middlin to fair and we were all happy
Brother Walfrid
John Glass
Willie Maley
Jock Stein
Jimmy Johnstone
Fergus McCann
Are the guys who were “important” but I’m guessing only two of them were loved while with us as the rest were “suits” even Walfrid.
