Safe Standing, great, but let’s get it right

790

Delighted for everyone involved in making Celtic the first club in Britain to be given permission to install Safe Standing facilities.  There’s time for a seat but going to the football in Scotland was largely a standing undertaking for a century, for good reason.

Standing enables the creation of football’s now too scarce atmosphere, it allows people to shuffle in the cold and sing with projection.  It’s also safer across more scenarios than sitting.

I have one (significant) problem with the plans……..

Celtic intend to install Safe Standing at the corner of the lower North and Lisbon Lions stands, including the Green Brigade’s area.  The Green Brigade pitched up at this part of the ground one League Cup game several years ago, the area was no more or less appropriate for as a singing section than any other part of the ground.

The North Stand upper is the proper place for a Safe Standing section, front and centre of the stadium.  It’s where the Jungle was, and if we’re going to come anywhere close to recreating the unique atmosphere of the Jungle in a modern stadium, we must select the appropriate area.

The Safe Standing section will have unique properties.  The ability to stand all game, bounce around and generally be more active, will ensure it sells out, but it’s unlikely to attract the infirm, and it will never be part of the family section.  It’s also not going to attract corporate business.

The decision where to locate this section is unlikely to be reversed until there is a major stadium renovation, and that’s likely to be decades away.  A couple of decades out, there will be more demand for family and infirm sections, more demand for corporate and lounge facilities.

Football spent years failing to notice how people grew fond of comfort, shelter, safe and clean facilities.  The trend is not over.  Thousands will want to stand, but perhaps more will want access to lounges, video games for the kids and shops selling all sorts.

Celtic Park is magnificent building of its time but it’s not a 21st century stadium.  The Celtic Way is genuinely stunning, but if we want to cater for fans in the decades to come we’ll need proper cafes, fan zones, bars, better toilets and a museum.  We’ll need to make use of all that land we’ve acquired, but which largely lies undeveloped.

Real estate in the lower stands will be more of a premium in the future, we should plan for it now, make the Safe Standing section the New Jungle.

Sports Direct is not a travel agents – for the avoidance of doubt.

I think the Rangers are bonkers they cannot get credit from anyone big MA gave them 5 million now they are refusing to give him his money back so who would give a club with that kind of track record a loan ? They have very few players no manager no back room staff just how they are going to be ready for the new season is a real mystery any supporter who purchases a season should be prepared to lose there money.H.H.

GSL will pay the 5 million back if they lose court case. Play the saviour card to the zombies have all our property back blah blah blah. Don’t think this is a jelly n ice cream moment.

  3. Perhaps it is time for King to play his ace in the hole.

Get Walter Dignity (sometimes) on board, or on the Board and the gullible will fork up Ashley’e five million.

Very entertaining news about Sports Direct v RIFC in court tomorrow…

If money is ringfenced then it might just set back Mr King’s rebuilding ‘plans’ for Sevco…

On a different note, did you catch Mr Regan’s comments about the FAI yesterday? He said some very ‘ironic’ things about following rules.

A fair scenario. However it appears that Ashley would retain 49% of some assets. This would not leave King a lot of wriggle room.

It’s a I’ve bigger gonads than you competition. GSL trying to throw his weight about. Ashley has him beat the 5 million will get paid back. GSL will spin it. Ashley will sit back and rake in 49% of retail for the next 7 years.

  15. As posted last night Kings dream is coming true. Ashley will take them down.

King has not invested a cent , seen how short of cash the club is and knows he made the wrong decision.

The scenario of no senior football at Ibrox next season cannot be dismissed. Fans fleeced again and media as compliant as every. Unconscious incompetents.

  17. Just back from the FAC meeting at St. Anne’s.

Some harrowing stories were told about police powers running amok and political policing has become a reality.

Fans from Motherwell, Hamilton and a brave lass who supports the Ibrox team spoke up too about the atmosphere being created around football supporting.

The suspicion is that the Bill is going to be defended with some back up stats from Pet researchers specially commissioned, like Dr. Morrow was, to get the desired outcome. We are in the last days of being able to influence this by a campaign with our MSPs , MPs and councillors to make sure they know the terrible effect and stigma this is having on young lives. FAC will provide you with ammunition and advice if you are willing to contact your elected reps and visit their surgeries.

Otherwise our grandchildren might be rugby supporters.

“I can’t understand why Celtic supporters must be the detectives when it comes to Rangers. Why don’t you all just leave them to it?”

I believe this has been explained before so I cannot see where you can have a failure to understand. A disagreement on tactics , yes, but the explanation is fairly obvious.

If fans of other clubs do not highlight the rule bending and corruption behind attempts to promote the Continuity Myth, what do you think the outcome of your “leave it all to the Rangers Fans” advice be?

They would very much like your advice to be followed. Stop shining the lights on us. let us police ourselves like we did prior to 2012.

Only one outcome of that approach.

    Good Man.

We heard from a mother of a Hamilton Supporter fitted up by police evidence who woke to find two policemen at the foot of her bed as they opened an unlocked door and went straight to her bedroom to inform her of her son’s charge.

We heard from Motherwell fans who have difficulty in persuading their board to be publicly supportive of the campaign, though they have expressed this view privately, because they do not want to make isolated statements.

We heard from FAC that many other club fans and sadly, a fair few CP ones, still think this is just aimed at Celtic and Rangers fans and is about sectarianism, which is obviously a bad thing, so how can they be opposed to measures to tackle a bad thing?

The amount of ignorance, and I mean that in its truest sense, flying about on this Act is staggering.

There was a blog by a cream bun doing the rounds at weekend stating GSL had actually been given money for his share purchase by the 3 bears ?

If true, is this telling us, either he has not got the money, or more likely, cannot get it out of SA ? Has the SA government still got a grip of his finances ?

I believe his value is often claimed to be in SA Rand, and being lost in spin, so If he is worth 250m rand ? This is less than £15m

So a SA Rand Billionaire is around £50m, he would need to invest all this to get anywhere near the SPFL, with the 3 bears also putting in something similar

GSL about to be exposed ???
