Safe Standing, great, but let’s get it right

790

Delighted for everyone involved in making Celtic the first club in Britain to be given permission to install Safe Standing facilities.  There’s time for a seat but going to the football in Scotland was largely a standing undertaking for a century, for good reason.

Standing enables the creation of football’s now too scarce atmosphere, it allows people to shuffle in the cold and sing with projection.  It’s also safer across more scenarios than sitting.

I have one (significant) problem with the plans……..

Celtic intend to install Safe Standing at the corner of the lower North and Lisbon Lions stands, including the Green Brigade’s area.  The Green Brigade pitched up at this part of the ground one League Cup game several years ago, the area was no more or less appropriate for as a singing section than any other part of the ground.

The North Stand upper is the proper place for a Safe Standing section, front and centre of the stadium.  It’s where the Jungle was, and if we’re going to come anywhere close to recreating the unique atmosphere of the Jungle in a modern stadium, we must select the appropriate area.

The Safe Standing section will have unique properties.  The ability to stand all game, bounce around and generally be more active, will ensure it sells out, but it’s unlikely to attract the infirm, and it will never be part of the family section.  It’s also not going to attract corporate business.

The decision where to locate this section is unlikely to be reversed until there is a major stadium renovation, and that’s likely to be decades away.  A couple of decades out, there will be more demand for family and infirm sections, more demand for corporate and lounge facilities.

Football spent years failing to notice how people grew fond of comfort, shelter, safe and clean facilities.  The trend is not over.  Thousands will want to stand, but perhaps more will want access to lounges, video games for the kids and shops selling all sorts.

Celtic Park is magnificent building of its time but it’s not a 21st century stadium.  The Celtic Way is genuinely stunning, but if we want to cater for fans in the decades to come we’ll need proper cafes, fan zones, bars, better toilets and a museum.  We’ll need to make use of all that land we’ve acquired, but which largely lies undeveloped.

Real estate in the lower stands will be more of a premium in the future, we should plan for it now, make the Safe Standing section the New Jungle.

Sports Direct is not a travel agents – for the avoidance of doubt.

Perchance, at the FAC meeting, were you aware of any photographing of attendees.

Regards the attendance, I know it is easy for me to say so, but had I been home, I’d have made a point of being there. As I said, easy for me to say that but I honestly wish I’d been there.

GSL will pay the 5 million back if they lose court case. Play the saviour card to the zombies have all our property back blah blah blah. Don’t think this is a jelly n ice cream moment.”

Could be, but I don’t think so, if RIPLC had the wherewithal to pay this…

    A. Why not pay it when the new regime took control? Like they said they would, lots of saviour points in that

    B. Why vote against Friday’s resolution, advise other shareholders to do the same?

    C. Why state that even if the MASH resolution is passed, the Board are not beholden to the vote and will still not pay?

    D. Why not state at Monday’s press conference SDL have started legal proceedings against RIPLC? Tell the people how you are going to deal with it and how you will “vigorously defend” the action.

No, they have no stratagem to deal with this.

Best to take bets on the first to be claimed to be DUPED and by whom.

My bet would be the three bears by DCK.

Though Paul Murray by DCK may have good odds.

Don’t rule out the Three bears been duped by Paul Murray.

An interesting few days for the gallant Sevconian pioneers, as the Journey takes them from the High Court in London today, and back to home turf tomorrow for the EGM.

Once these hurdles are successfully overcome then, and only then, can work begin on the rooftop casino and the floating pitch.

Or is it floating casino, and rooftop pitch?

Either way, success is guaranteed for the plucky band of intrepid travellers.

Just heard on the news this am that Mike Ashley has resigned his position on the Newcastle board. More active involvement with the deady bears on the cards?

  8. Are we not in Martin Bain/ Imran Ahmad territory once again.

These people went to court, at different times, to ring-fence monies, with the reason given that the Ibrox club was about to go bust.

Ashley must see that the resolutions put up by King & Co at tomorrows EGM, are designed to basically ‘kill off’ the relationship between the club and MASH.

When that relationship is broken, all goodwill, if there ever was any, goes out of the window, and it is a fight to a finish.

Is this move by MASH simply to ring-fence the £5 million?

Do the Ibrox club have an money in the bank?

Will MASH be asking that a receiver is appointed?

Why has MASH decided to go to court the day before the EGM?

Why has Ashley resigned from the Newcastle Board?

What could Ashley do with the securities he has over Murray Park etc, if the resolution not to pay the loan is carried?

The big no no over recent years was the vehement opposition by fans to the sale and leaseback of Ibrox – even that option is not available without Ashley’s agreement.

King & Co have purposely pick a fight with Ashley – they must know that they can’t win.

So what is behind this move – is it to force liquidation and blame it on MASH?

I LOVE the efforts that you and your ilk have put into correcting or, doing-away with the ‘evening-up-legislation’ but….would I be correct in saying that…the Celtic board and, Paul McBride-QC were some of the ‘cooks’ who served-up this unpalatable dish?

Have you and your ilk…nailed them down(I know PMQC has passed on) and asked them to come clean on their contributions to this mess?

I’ve said for years on here….there are more swivel-eyed-characters at your club to be dealt with…BEFORE….you think about – the establishment.

IMHO…this mess was cooked-up easily….coz of a kow-towing Celtic board who shuffled along to a Govt-Summit after the ‘shame-game’ coz we had 3 players booked and, our manager Neil Lennon was under threat from attack from the Rangers dug-out on several occasions during the game….but, our board agreed that we were equally to blame?

I’m afraid that your barking up the wrong tree.

I still LOVE you and yer ilk

  19. Attended the FAC meeting last night and one of the most worrying things for me was tha fact that a young person’s life can be ruined for being a wee bit daft. I mean two Hamilton fans arrested for singing, “Well Well, f**k yer Well”, with not a Motherwell fan in sight.

  20. Should be a costly day for sevco !

Representing Sports Direct is Adam Lewis QC. He is the pre-eminent specialist in sports tort. He is also the most expensive silk. Should RIFC lose this case, with costs awarded to Sports Direct, the bill will be north of seven figures. King did say that he had a meeting in London later in the week. It was rather remiss of him not to mention it was in The Chancery Division of The High Courts of Justice.

  21. Can I take this opportunity to repeat for the morning shift that the strong observation from FAC last night was that the Scottish Government is already in receipt of the Stirling University “review” of the OBaF Act. The expectation is that this will be a review of the perceptions of the uninformed rather than a real examination of the impact of the Act on real lives. Like Dr. Morrow’s commissioned report on sectarianism, it will have found a way to make a superficial attitudinal study meet the requirements of the Report’s commissioners and arrive at the conclusion that “all is well as far as the public sees it and football fans are getting the kicking they deserve”.

This outcome is reached easily by asking uninformed people if they think it is a good idea to tackle sectarianism and, if so, here’s an Act that does so, do you think that this should be supported? Most of those who get their info from the papers see this business through that lens. To them, the Act is about stopping all that Ulster stuff, no place for that in Modern Scotland, therefore, the Act must be a good thing. They believe it only affects Celtic or Rangers and they deserve a kicking. The one organisation, FAC, that have collated data about real people affected by real actions have been studiously ignored by the researchers undertaking research into impact. That should ring alarm bells as to their seriousness and commitment to be impartial.

Yet, we have seen fans of all clubs lifted for alleged swearing (if they merely mention the name or nickname of opposition fans as the target- so “Well, Well, F*** your Well- is now deemed offensive under this Act). We have seen the charged personnel stitched up by corroborative evidence from police colleagues who were not in the vicinity, by evidence that was belied by their own video evidence, and we have even seen police exercise powers they do not have to force people to delete their own video evidence from their mobile phones. We have seen a FAC group that picketed the SNP conference peacefully, followed by police and served with a notice to disperse.

We have seen, at a time, when police manpower is stretched and arrest rates for real crimes are plummeting, that groups of police are conducting dawn raids, charging fans on return from holiday at the airport, turning up to give evidence on 5 or more occasions at various courts over an 18 month to 2 year period, and, even, entering a house, via an unlocked door, to serve notice on a mother sleeping in her bed.

This is our last chance to influence the spread of this type of behaviour as it looks like the Pet researchers chosen are about to deliver the desired outcome.

It is time to let MSPs, MPs and Councillors of all parties, but particularly those from the SNP, know about our opposition. I say, particularly the SNP, not to target an “enemy” group but because they are the party that will bloc vote this issue through. All the other parties are already persuaded of the lack of merit in this legislation but it would not harm to give them a wee reminder too.

Please do what you can before it gets too late. If a whitewash report gives this a covering of respectability and the Press backs this up, it will be too late.

P.S. Can I ask if anyone knows of any Celtic fan or others who were interviewed in-depth by the Stirling Uni researchers. I would be keen to obtain details of how that was conducted and impressions gained. You could even publicise your observations on CQN, if you prefer but the FAC website would be even better.

If I was a hun id want nothing to do with this shambles, FC united of manchester are doing well, no reason why a splinter team couldnt form, it may happen with all this going on, if Ashley takes full control, how many of these Rangers fans who oppose him are going to attend games, buy season tickets and buy merchandise.

  26. VVD didn’t grow up in Holland dreaming of playing for Celtic. We all know this.

So when he is prompted with a question about a big move he will of course say something along the lines of “I like it here but I would like to further my career in a bigger league”.

It’s understandable. It goes without saying. We don’t need it rammed down our throat every day. We won’t sell until the deal is right and CL qualification is sorted.
