Safe Standing, great, but let’s get it right

790

Delighted for everyone involved in making Celtic the first club in Britain to be given permission to install Safe Standing facilities.  There’s time for a seat but going to the football in Scotland was largely a standing undertaking for a century, for good reason.

Standing enables the creation of football’s now too scarce atmosphere, it allows people to shuffle in the cold and sing with projection.  It’s also safer across more scenarios than sitting.

I have one (significant) problem with the plans……..

Celtic intend to install Safe Standing at the corner of the lower North and Lisbon Lions stands, including the Green Brigade’s area.  The Green Brigade pitched up at this part of the ground one League Cup game several years ago, the area was no more or less appropriate for as a singing section than any other part of the ground.

The North Stand upper is the proper place for a Safe Standing section, front and centre of the stadium.  It’s where the Jungle was, and if we’re going to come anywhere close to recreating the unique atmosphere of the Jungle in a modern stadium, we must select the appropriate area.

The Safe Standing section will have unique properties.  The ability to stand all game, bounce around and generally be more active, will ensure it sells out, but it’s unlikely to attract the infirm, and it will never be part of the family section.  It’s also not going to attract corporate business.

The decision where to locate this section is unlikely to be reversed until there is a major stadium renovation, and that’s likely to be decades away.  A couple of decades out, there will be more demand for family and infirm sections, more demand for corporate and lounge facilities.

Football spent years failing to notice how people grew fond of comfort, shelter, safe and clean facilities.  The trend is not over.  Thousands will want to stand, but perhaps more will want access to lounges, video games for the kids and shops selling all sorts.

Celtic Park is magnificent building of its time but it’s not a 21st century stadium.  The Celtic Way is genuinely stunning, but if we want to cater for fans in the decades to come we’ll need proper cafes, fan zones, bars, better toilets and a museum.  We’ll need to make use of all that land we’ve acquired, but which largely lies undeveloped.

Real estate in the lower stands will be more of a premium in the future, we should plan for it now, make the Safe Standing section the New Jungle.

Sports Direct is not a travel agents – for the avoidance of doubt.

  1. I have to take issue with Tommy Boyd when he writes “Celtic are (sic) as strong as they can be for the Champions League qualifiers”

Does anyone agree that we need a full back, perhaps another central defender (should VVD leave), an experienced play-maker and a proven goal-scorer at European level?

Boyata looks good business, but with Mikael’s fragility and no cover for Izzy, we are taking a chance.

VVD will go, but we may have him during the qualifiers.

An experienced midfielder, similar to, but not, Erimenko, not playing every game, but able to unlock European defences when things get tight and nervy.

A clinical and reliable modern striker, mobile and reliable – I know we have Griff, but is he the answer on CL nights?

I am not being a ‘wet blanket’, but if we can string a couple of CL group stages in the next three years, we will be a million miles away from ‘you know who’ and strong enough financially to expect to qualify for CL every year after that.

  2. Patrick27,

I think the clumpany refer to journeys since they have already had one type of adventure and may be experiencing it again, soon!

In fact, if Third Rangers becomes a reality this year, would it be proof that fans of the Govan based clumpany are really Buddhists after all – reincarnation and all that?

  3. Hamiltontim,

Kenny Macaskill appears to be not only deaf but has a brass neck as well. Proposing that just convinces me that RC Ogilive IS planning to join the clumpany.

Morning bhoys and ghirls I hope you are all enjoying this fine weather.

I was also at the FAC meeting last night. My son spoke at the meeting regarding his recent court case. He spoke about the pressure he felt under. He spoke about the worry that if found guilty the potential career he is aiming for would be ruined. He also helps a charity by going to schools and giving talks, question and answer session then some training. He does this as an ex athlete who has represented Scotland and GB. If found guilty that was no longer an option. I seen the change in my son over that 15 month period and it wasn’t pleasant. Fortunately for Sean he was found Not Guilty and can move on with his life. Although after being a season book holder for 21 years he has not been back to a game since 1st March 2014 the day he was arrested. Now like others have posted HT SFTB and gorbalstam some of the other people who are or have been charged under this draconian act have some very real and disturbing accounts to tell. The lady from Hamilton waking up with 2 coppers in her bedroom. The young fella who is feeling a bit ostracised at his work and if found guilty will probably lose his job. There are others but to many to mention.

Anyway what I am getting at is this. These are not hardened criminals or gangsters they are young kids, young adults who only want to go and watch their team play football. Just like you and me only thing is they are being targeted by a police force who are out of control. Young lives are being ruined and as SFTB said if we all just sit back and allow this our grandchildren will be rugby fans. This law will expand if not challenged very soon you want to picket something the police will arrest hassle and intimidate, you want to go to a rally in George Square hassle intimidation you want to go to a James Connolly memorial hassle intimidation. It’s already started. Some of the things that was spoken about last night were nothing short of a police state that is getting more out of control and being backed to the hilt by the Scottish government after all its their law.

What I am trying to get over is that the FAC and the Celtic Trust are fighting this as much as they can. Not only for Celtic fans but fans of all teams. They need help and that’s what I am asking for now. Hamiltontim and minx1888 are doing what they can but they need help and support from us. What I want to suggest is if anyone would like to get together and see how we can help do our bit as these organisations seriously need help. I didn’t know Jeanette Finlay before my son was charged but she stepped in and gave a lot of support through FAC. I at least got the chance with my son to thank her some don’t. If anybody is interested get in touch with me through by email at johnkeogh@talktalk.net or my phone number which Hamiltontim, minx1888, lennybhoy, blantyretim and four greenfields has.

I’ll take my cue from you to segue from the understandable interest in some folks legal problems to a fitba comment.

Just watching from Oz a live broadcast of a “friendly” in Yokohama as Japan take on an inexperienced Iran side ahead of their World Cup qualifier.

Impressed I was by Japan’s backing up at corners with two players (one defender and a recognised attacker) positioned for the inswinger which eludes the tall timber in the penalty box, leaving the defender with an easy poacher’s goal. If he missed sharpshooter Honda was behind him.

Despite our astute coaches Celtic often put all their eggs in the “pushing and pulling” basket directly in front of goal. Gives the ref the easy option of an “interference” free kick the defender’s way.

Oops, another one! Japan 3 – 0 up after 34 minutes.

Hope your boy – and the others – are able to move on from their experiences, they are not crimminals, this is a bad law.

    SNP my arse.

  10. Ronny has said that he would like to work with a smaller/tighter first team squad (20/22), with back-up coming from our younger players – I am all for this, however at present our numbers are not up to strength.

We have seventeen fully-fledged pros – Gordon, Zaluska, Lustig, Izaguirre, Virgil, Boyata, Mulgrew, Commons, Biton, Brown, GMS, Armstrong, Ambrose, Johansen, Forrest, Griffiths and Stokes .

We need another four at least – full back – central defender – midfield – striker.

We can then use the likes of Scepovic, Rogic, Henderson, McGregor and Fisher as back-up.

That would be a very tight twenty-six including youngsters – can the above mentioned youngsters step-up?

A really good post mate. I think part of the difficulty is that there’s still so much ignorance and apathy surrounding this legislation. Last night demonstrated that this isn’t a law just aimed at Celtic supporters, it isn’t even a law aimed at football supporters in general. This goes to the very heart of political policing, civil liberties and the right of free expression.

    Thompsontwin

A lot of good points in your notes, I also believe we have too many players on the periphery taking money out of our club.

Boerrigter, Pukki ( due back), Balde ( due back), Frijsdonson ( due back) , so we need to get them off our payroll, I believe Zaluska is about to move out of contract ?

I personally do not rate McGregor, so would look to move on

I also think we need to be giving our youth a chance, Henderson and Fisher have looked the part when used, we have Tierney and O’Connell also done ok, there is McMullan coming through, with hopefully others.

Do wee need to add a back up keeper ? I would give Fasan a chance, may be a question over Europe for this one, but for me I would try it ?

both Dijks or Wilson we have been linked with, can also cover left back as can Mulgrew

Mathews form will return and with Fisher we should be covered at Right back

Lots of rumours around Aiden returning, I would play him in same role as KC as required ?

No idea how we sort out the CF role though :-) could young Donnelly back up for SPFL ?

Dylan Mcgeough is due back from loan as well, he seems to be all but forgotten, hes a decent midfielder. not sure if he’ll be released or loaned again.

  24. Thompsontwin

From your 17 Zaluska, VVD & Stokes will probably leave. You missed Matthews. Of your back ups only Henderson will be a first team player IMO. So that gives us 16. Add a back up keeper, a LB, another CB and a striker and that’s a first team squad of 20. Of the youngsters as back up, we may need to sign a couple for specific positions ((CB & striker) but the rest should be from current development team.

  25. robert 88
