Only Boyata and Malumbu earned pass marks last night.

As for ‘fans favourite’ Lee Griffiths.

    Oh my.

What’s that you say, he’s just signed a four year deal.

    Oh my. Forrest too?

Their midfield 4 cost £0 in transfer fees, their two strikers (Daboum) £5m and (Minamino) £400k. Hardly flexing financial muscle. What they obviously have is a very good youth set up and promote players from there and excellent recruitment that, for example, picks up Haidara and Samessakou from Africa and develops them (they did it with Naby Keita now of Liverpool in the past). They are an extremely well run club who have a vision of how they are run and a plan to execute it.

    We don’t.

  4. Travellerbhoy your courage is humbling. Keep telling it as it happened.

Jamesgang that is a vision to behold.

Macjay I bet on Celtic to win or draw and when I left for work we were 1-0 up and I knew we would lose. RB Salzburg are at their pinacle. We need to get points v Leipzig to progress. Keep the faith.

  5. The thing is, Hendry has been utterly shown up. You cannot trust him to block a shot, make a decisive tackle or win a header.

Lustig has his limitations as well but generally you can trust him to do the bare minimum.

  6. Last nights game pitted one team whose board has ambitions and will spend money to get as far as they can against a team who has a board that isn’t fit for purpose and will bank the money and not spend it (27 million in the bank at last accounts), indeed, they will even sell their best player with 3 hours of the transfer window left without a replacement!

In fact the CEO of the club sees himself as the General Manager too, and actually stops the manager from

getting his top targets in order to participate in nights like tonight.

Incredibly, some bloggers and people like Paul 67 actually back our CEO/General Manager to the detriment of the manager!

Unsurprisingly, the ambitious team won on the night.

Busy we blog last night, did we lose.

Started to read back a bit until I got to Matt Stewart and his contribution, he was actually at the game folks, after reading that I thought I ain’t going to read anything better on here today, so cheers Matt, sums up my Celtic .

  8. Red Bull have taken Leipzig from the 5th tier to the top (or very near it) in German football. These teams have money we can only dream off. Football is now largely about finances especially when it come to European football.

We now need to get a run of wins domestically because we’re the red bull of Scotland – albeit our wealth is self generated. We need to be kicking on and do our best in Europe but not get hung up on it. This season is season of transition – I expect a major overhaul beginning in January so the league and a cup will do for me this year.

Morning Bhoys the morning after the night before and it doesnt feel any better.A question in my mind is how can the Rangers get a whole team of players in over the summer and they are doing better in Europe than the hoops ? how can Hearts bring in a whole team of new players over the summer and be doing better than Celtic in the SPL ? There is something sadly wrong at Parkhead we have a huge wage bill for the players we have but we have a poor looking side. H.H.

  11. Rarely if ever post, unless i’m trying to get a free ticket from SFTB:-)

Just wanted to thank Travellerbhoy for his poems, incredibly powerful and moving. If I ever get the chance I’d love to buy you a pint and just listen to you.

  12. Surely there must be someone on the Celtic Board, who has to tell Lawell and Co,to stop penny pinching ,I wonder what Willie Haughey a ordinary working class supporter, back in the day,he fortunately is in the position of being close to Desmond, and Lawell and ask questions as to what is going on at Celtic,me personally think that Brendan Rodgers has said that if another Premiership club comes in for him then he is off,he has seen the pittance of transfer cash has been made to him,and I think that’s were all problems lie,and he won’t be short of Clubs ie ,Stoke, Newcastle,Everton,Man it’s,

Probably like a few others, I found myself googling RB Salzburg revenue, turnover, highest transfer spend etc last night. 60.2m euro for 2015 is all I could find. I remember Ronny Deila commenting in 2014 that his Celtic needed to use Salzburg as inspiration on the field on how to play football. High intensity, crisp passing, technically very good. Their transfer model isn’t too far off Celtic’s in terms on net spend, yet they are miles ahead of Celtic. I know other factors influence the contrast between both clubs, technical ability of UK players, access to African markets, our proximatity to EPL and battles with hyper inflation etc. Don’t we could do worse than model RB Salzburg as an aspiration for ourselves.

  15. Not sure what all the doom and gloom is about.

The Old Firm gravy train is now back on the rails and the balance sheet is a thing of beauty.

The Great Desmondo will be a happy man with the way things are at the moment, so why can’t the fans not just feel the same way?

  16. Indeed Ernie indeed.

I can imagine in a year or so time paul67 telling us why it’s actually good for us to have the Huns putting us in our place whilst warbling on occasionally about cheating.

Egomania has spiked the dream…DD, PL, BR…you don’t care like we do…for you it is about prestige and money…for us it’s about love and belonging…

  19. weebobbycollins on

And the players? Where’s the fight and passion? Had so much confidence in our three French Musketeers at the start of the season…I really believed for a wee while…alas! after so many decades of following and supporting the Celtic, this is where I am now…really scunnered. The overt corruption in football is killing the game for me. Television is the new god………..

  20. Honestly thought that the Celtic performance last night was pretty reasonable against a very good outfit.

Salzburg are not a Barca or a PSG but they are Europa contenders and have a much better recent European record than we have.

I have seen many, many worse performances from a Celtic team than last night.

However, the result was still dreadful, and the collapse was instantaneous and avoidable around the hour mark. Without that collapse, it could have been the discipline of the RB players that collapsed- we saw the petulance of their striker and their constant harrasment of the ref.

But, all of that mitigation counts for nothing, when the result is so disappointing after the promise.

This was no Red Imps type performance

It was not a Legia or a Utrecht performance.

But it was a 3:1 defeat and all opinoions have to deal with that fact.

The gloom is returning because, as with Mourinho’s Man U, there is still a bad smell of discord arounfd our camp.

We all need a wee dose of whatever Boyata is taking. Here is a man who is not letting his standards slip even though we all know he is a Bosman in the making in January.

The rest of the players, the management and fans need to develop a Boyata spirit.

The Board and PL can do nothing for us until January comes around- so we can bitch about the summer transfer window or we can rally round the team to do as well as we can.

I think it would be a great achievment to qualify above Salzburg and Leipzig but it is doable, even if it is unlikely.

We are in a fight for this league with Hearts primarily but a few others are in as much contention as we are.

We are in a fight for our cups.

And we are definitely in a fight to qualify in Europe.

At the moment, we have one win and one loss. If we do not lose both Leipzig ties, we will still be in contention, so there will be no surrender as yet.

  21. Another day after a poor evening before, but I am still a Celtic Supporter. But then I am more lucky than most on here, I was at Lisbon on 25th May 1967. Big Jock took local bhoys and turned them into a class act, something that others who followed have failed to do on so many occasions.

There appears to be a lack of urgency about so many of our players now. Oh for midfield with a modern Auld and Murdoch. But then we would also require a wee Jinky and a Bobby Lennox and the rest. Yes, we will never see their likes again, sadly. Even a few Celtic supporters in the team might make a difference. But, what do I know about football?

” These teams have money we can only dream off. Football is now largely about finances especially when it come to European football.”

The problem with making that argument, I.e. Celtic can’t compete because we do not have funds is that it implies that Celtic would spend money and, consequently, be a better team if the had funds.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. Celtic had record profit, turnover, and circa £42m in the bank gross (before the sale of Dembele) and yet spent £100,000 net last year.

The detriment to Celtic’s progress is not solely the financial environment of European football, but the manner in which we are run.

Mibbe we should find out what Stevie Bruce is up to these days….

I hear hes opened up a coleslaw franchise.

  24. SFTB,

It seems I take the polar opposite view of the game from you. No problem with that.

For me it was our performance that was sooooo disappointing. I anticipated the result.

I did not anticipate us scoring almost immediately. From an unexpected position of strength we threw it away. Again.

It may not have been the worst ever performance, but it nevertheless shows us going backwards and just not learning.

For me, European football is our benchmark .

A wonderful goal by Odsonne, a glimpse of what £9m striker can achieve with the right service.

Unfortunately, our mid seem unable to practice the basics. Passing and moving with intent.

Into 3rd season with Brendan and can anyone honestly say we are seeing improvement?

All the departments and functions at Celtic are not functioning together as they should.

All the blather about sticking together in the face of evil forces outside the club is all very well and good.

However, the club must inspire confidence ….

  26. THE HANDS CANT HIT WHAT THE EYES CANT SEE

Our recruiting is a major concern. We’ve still got the spine of Ronny’s team and Brendan can’t get the same out of them – Lustig in particular has nosed dived.

I believe we will sort this and win the league and a cup. Europe though will require a big overhaul.

It’s disheartening to think of the money spent on Hendry, Compper and Koussi so I can understand some reluctance to buy on the say so of our current scouts. I suggest we need to sort the scouts out first before spending.

  27. To me its immaterial how good Salzburg are.I watched their Champions league qualifier against Red Star they were 2 up and were extremely naïve in not closing the game down therefore conceding 2 goals and going out. They are not some super team but they do play a high tempo game which we couldn’t cope with.We keep making the same mistakes and have to listen to the same bland excuses time and time again.Jack Hendry seems to fit Brendan`s profile, stylish on the ball but unable to sense danger or make important blocks, surely the first attribute of a central defender is being able to defend.Brendan does not seem to be able to gaivanise this set of players, maybe its Brendan`s ego but we’ve not been a good team to watch for over a year now.Too predictable and sussed out easy by much lesser teams than Salzburg.

    This is appalling.

  28. Greenpinata

Don’t think there is much disagreement.

If we had not had that good start and we were doing quite well at holding them to long range shots by minute 55, then the disappointment would have been fully justified.

It would have been yet another one of those Euro away ties where The Fear was evident early and we were 2 goals down inside 20 to 30 minutes, leaving the home tem on easy street.

But last night’s game was not that.

Lustig’s slowing down to stand a yard and a half off the RB player on the touchline gives him a chance of a sclaffed cross which fall nicely for their striker and Craig’s hand fails to stop it.

    That’s when the collapse came. Apart from the thrust when we were 2:1 down, leading to Callum’s shot being deflected for a corner, we stopped creating and The Fear was evident in some clearances in our penalty box being hit off our own players etc;

For the final 30 minutes we were pretty poor but, since we agree that this was not a low water mark, the charge of going backwards is unproven. Last year we qualified for the CL Group (with only 3 qualifying matches) but lost 5 of our 6 CL group ties, two of them by heavy margins.

If we do not qualify for the round of 32, as we did last year, the charge of going backwards is proven.

Until then, we have a fighter’s chance.

All we need is to find the fight.

  29. So who’s gonnae be first tae say “The Rangers can win the Europa League?”…
