Samaras and Commons guile preferred to Boerrigter tonight

354

You and I both like to see new signings introduced but it would be an enormous gamble to throw Derk Boerrigter into the fray tonight.  The player is unlikely to have trained with his new teammates, will know little about Celtic’s systems, and while Neil Lennon will have watched Derk many times, the real discovery period will be in the weeks to come.  A place on the bench for Derk will be fine.

I’ve been a bit confused by the Moh Bangura debate; can we really care that much if he plays, I mean, we’re not talking about a guy who scored as many goals for us as Daryl Murphy here.  The discourse sounds not dissimilar to some of the ways Jock Stein would manipulate events ahead of a game.  Put the opponent on the back foot from the off, cover all bases.

Key players for Celtic tonight, as always when it comes to Europe, will be Georgios Samaras and Kris Commons.  They have the maturity and guile to know how to deliver, but our defence will need to be alert to what will be the superior fitness of the Elfsborg players, especially late in the game.

Hibs have obviously not prepared. They also have a rake of injuries. Malmo top the league and dare I say got lucky? I didn;t see the game but speaking to Hibees at work Hibs were woeful. Totally woeful!

Celtic are a different club. We have CL quality players. Proven at the top level – International standard.

Celtic have also been back much earlier than any other Scottish club and have played a lot of friendlies which I was told even though I was concerned about results were about fitness! If we are not fit it is our own fault. I don’t believe the team we are playing tonight will be any fitter than us. We have played two competitive games already and looked miles ahead of Cliftonville in fitness. I reckon our players will be fresher and will get the result tonight. I hope if we don’t get the result we expect that fitness will not be blamed. The players should be prepared and ready. These matches haven’t sneaked up on us.

I fancy a 3-0 tonight and think Kris Commons and Samaras will provide at least 2 of those goals. I think we will be fit and ready to go from the first whistle. Kill this game before half time and kill the tie before we head to Sweden.

I cannot see anything other than a Celtic victory tonight.

That brilliant Athletico Madrid team deservedly beat us by a single goal two years ago.The Juve game was never a 3-nil,it was a freak result.Barca done us a few times as well at home.

  5. There seem to be a few that both want to sneer at Bangoura as rubbish, don’t want him back, he’ll never play for Celtic etc.

Then they somehow turn on a sixpence and say he needs to be loyal to us and not the team that have given him first team football and pay his wages.

I can’t really wish him well but I don’t see that any ill feeling is justified at all.

I’m with you re Bangura, Paul. If he was any good he’d be playing for us tonight. Don’t get all the “what if he scores?” stuff. What if he was left out and his replacement scored two?

Re Murphy – didn’t he get a really good solo goal v Dundee Utd?

Doyle? Think we can do better. 1 in 3 for Reading; 1 in 5 for Wolves. Wasn’t Balde supposed to be our target man? Would be a bit worried about what was happening with him if we went and got another one in so soon.

  9. Gene's a Bhoy's name on

Bangura is a professional footballer -we should not expect less than 100% commitment to the team for which he plays.

  10. I would have thought that for any player Celtic loan out there would be a standard clause in the contract that said that the player could not play against us in any circumstances.

So can’t get my head around how we should have put the clause in.

We shouldn’t have to remember it should be part of the small print under terms and conditions!

I do hope you are correct and that we can match up for fitness over a competitive 90 mins. I agree, quality wise, we are ahead of the Swedes. My biggest hope is that our defence do not do anything silly in the opening 20 mins or so leaving us chasing the game.

If we take a 2 goal lead to Sweden, it’s over since we’ll set up over there to score again. A one goal lead? I’d be anxious but think we’d score again and see it through.

  18. GlassTwoThirdsFull

Doyle would cost less than Bangura did. Is that a gamble? He has experience at the highest level and is a player who has never won a major trophy to my knowledge. Throw in the fact that he may be a fan of Celtic and you could have a right good player on our hands. Neil Lennon seems to be persuing him which must mean he values the guy to a certain price. If Wolves are happy to see him go then they can be ennticed with add ons. If the guy gets us to last 16 and scores X amount of goals then Wolves get more money. Offer them £1m rising to £2m if we get through the CL group and he scores more than 20 goals for Celtic this season £500k for each achievement. The club will make way in excess of that if Doyle does the business. Everyone is happy.

I believe Doyle would take a wage of around £20k a week to play for Celtic. He is currently on the verge of playing League 1 and clearly doesn’t want to be there. I reckon he would walk to Paradise to play for Celtic and run through brick walls for us if given a jersey.

I see it as a much riskier purchase than both Balde and Bangura who cost us more and the experience he has would help our youngsters. He may even be able to convince future Wanyama’s and Hoopers to hang around a few more years because he has played down south and playing for a Wolves, Birmingham, Southampton, Norwich, QPR or a Fulham is nothing compared to running out at Paradise and playing in the CL.

I have always liked the guy and reckon he could be an excellent player in our side.

  19. The Token Tim,

The fact he is out on loan should be an incentive for him to improve himself to get in the team, not have the mindset of, well they loaned me out so I’m not good enough.

Loyalty is a dying quality among footballers I will admit. Unless you are brought up supporting a specific club then money will always be the main incentive. In Bangura’s case though ambition should be a factor too.

I think you would agree we are a bigger club than any Swedish or for that matter Scandinavian club. Surely when he joined he had the ambition to progress his career. Has that ambition now waned because he has been loaned out? Who knows

It is only my personal opinion that he should not play against us. I would have the same opinion of any of our players sent to other teams if we faced them in a competitive match. If he does play tonight, which looks likely then there really is no point in hanging onto him. We should put him up for sale if the club have no belief in his quality.

NL I agree has to take the blame for this cock up. It is the first time I have seen poor management from him and the team. I just hope we are not discussing Bangura later tonight.
