Samaras and Commons guile preferred to Boerrigter tonight

354

You and I both like to see new signings introduced but it would be an enormous gamble to throw Derk Boerrigter into the fray tonight.  The player is unlikely to have trained with his new teammates, will know little about Celtic’s systems, and while Neil Lennon will have watched Derk many times, the real discovery period will be in the weeks to come.  A place on the bench for Derk will be fine.

I’ve been a bit confused by the Moh Bangura debate; can we really care that much if he plays, I mean, we’re not talking about a guy who scored as many goals for us as Daryl Murphy here.  The discourse sounds not dissimilar to some of the ways Jock Stein would manipulate events ahead of a game.  Put the opponent on the back foot from the off, cover all bases.

Key players for Celtic tonight, as always when it comes to Europe, will be Georgios Samaras and Kris Commons.  They have the maturity and guile to know how to deliver, but our defence will need to be alert to what will be the superior fitness of the Elfsborg players, especially late in the game.

  1. Always the same on a CL day.

Despite the nerves and fear of the unknown I reckon we will mash the swedes ( see what I did there!!)

    Hopefully a 45k crowd.

We are the twelfth mhan and need to be there in numbers.

Samaras Was Never Effective In A Central Striker Partnership…..

Got quite a few in, would need to go through and tic off the names, so far the scanned stuff is working a treat, some of the printed ones are coming through on two pages I’m hoping that does not become a problem.

Nothing to do with Celtic fella. Your not allowed clauses preventing loanees playing against their parent club.

Will post that resolution to you this week.

Have to say I’m glad we’re playing a side whose chairman picks the team. It was the Elfsborg chairman who said Bangura would be playing.

Son of Gabriel – I am going now,as i am not here to argue with people.

Chris Sutton cost the club £6million.It was a lot of money back then, but money well spent. His goal scoring record whilst playing in England wasn’t too bad,he certainly improved after he joined Celtic.

In the year 2013,we can only dream about buying a £6million player.

And not once have i said that we should sign Kevin Doyle, but if the club continues to go with this crazy policy of buying six players a season for £1-2million each – then i can guarantee you this – you are not going to get a better quality of striker in that price range.

  10. I will be in Stirling on Saturday, but for family reasons, not music,as someone enquirer earlier.Just catching up on he blog.

  11. Kojo drinking early today I see.

Hooper scored more in the Championship than Skippy and scored in Europe for Celtic. Certainly looked a better all round player to me. Skippy had supply from Nakamura, Robson & McGeady. Skippy was lucky to be at Celtic but done a job whilst here.

Hooper is a class act and he will prove it in the EPL.

  14. Chris Sutton was one of my favourite Celts, I’ve not often had a name on the back of a shirt but had his.

    Highlights of his career:

Post match interview after banging in 2 against the deid yins, “I’m here to help put them in their place!”

Post match interview after we lost the league at Killie

and so many cracking goals but the one to whitewash the deid yins when he held off De Boer like he was a wee wean and then chipped Klos lives long in my memory! Especially as the Zombies to be were starting to celebrate a draw!

Talking about lobbing Klos,Henke done it more that once!

Loved it when spit the dog tried to lob big Fra a couple of years ago in the cup replay at Paradise. Hey dumbo he’s 6 foot 7 and on his goal line, not sure chipping him from 8 yards will do much!!

  15. TET If we win the Elfsborg tie then we are at least guaranteed Europa Cup Football. If we lose to Elfsborg we play a qualifier for Europa Cup Football. If we beat Elfsborg and win the next qualifier we go into Group Stages Champions League.

  16. The exiled tim

If we lose the next round we go straight to the Europa group… Hence if we get through this round European football is guaranteed till Christmas. If we lose this tie we get qualifiers for Europe.

  20. bazzabhoy,

So the previous players loaded out who never played against us, was because their new team didn’t want to play them, I was sure we had clauses to stop it, where do you get your info ?

  21. archdeaconsbench on

Re. Bangura, does anyone on here know for sure, if any clauses preventing him from lining up against Celtic are actually allowed in European competition? I know this happens in domestic football but there has been one or two instances in Europe where players have played (and scored) against their ‘parent’ club.

If such clauses are allowed, then I’m afraid it makes any complaints or ill will towards Bangura, whether from management, players or fans rather moot…. I don’t get it tbh… The guys entitled to play.

  22. No point in getting involved in the Kevin Doyle war. If he comes he comes if he doesn’t he doesn’t, nothing we can do about it, its Lenny’s call. If he does come it will be time enough to let the battle begin. I’m more interested in the game tonight, COYBIG.

  24. UEFA rules allow Celtic to open up extra space in Champions League squad

By Grant Russell 31 July 2013 15:57 BST

Adam Matthews has been moved across as Celtic look to balance their Champions League squad.SNS Group

Celtic have been able to free up a space in their squad for the UEFA Champions League thanks to a registration clause which encourages the inclusion of young players developed by clubs.

Adam Matthews, normally a member of the club’s main selection, has been moved to a secondary list because the 21-year-old has now been with the Scottish champions for two years.

Neil Lennon’s men have a current lack of home grown talent as first team regulars. Just three “locally trained” players – Scott Brown, Charlie Mulgrew and James Forrest – have been named in their 19-man main squad for the third qualifying round tie with Elfsborg.

A large number of youngsters are also in contention through the competition’s “List B” system, designed to allow clubs to name an unlimited number of players in their squad who are born after January 1, 1992 and have been with the club for two years uninterrupted since their 15th birthday.

Players on that list are normally those who have come through the ranks, such Bahrudin Atajic, Dylan McGeouch and Jackson Irvine amongst others.

Celtic though have been able to use the rule to move first team member Matthews on to List B for this season, freeing up a spot in their main squad for another foreign player in future squads.

Matthews had been on List A, the main 25-man squad list, for the ties with Cliftonville and in the original squad to face Elfsborg before he was replaced by Derk Boerrigter were made by 11pm on Tuesday.

The Welsh defender remains fully eligible to play for Celtic in any European competition this season despite the adjustment.

Celtic can name a new squad for the play-off round of the UEFA Champions League or Europa League, depending on which competition they progress to play in. A new squad list is also named for the group stage of either competition.

Teams must name eight “locally trained players” in their 25-man List A squads, of which a minimum of four must be “club trained”.

UEFA define a “locally trained player” as someone either brought through the youth ranks at the club registering him for European competition, or a player trained by another team in the same country.

A “club trained player” must have spent 36 months, or three seasons, at the club between the ages of 15 and 21. The player does not have to be from the country in which he is trained.

An “association trained player” is subject to the same guidelines but is trained by another club or a series of teams in the same association.

As Celtic can name only three home grown players on List A, they must leave five spaces vacant from a 25-man selection. Those spaces can be filled if Celtic sign a player who meets either of the criteria set out.

The club could, if it wished, include Tony Watt, Dylan McGeouch, Joe Chalmers, Marcus Fraser, Calum McGregor or Paul George on List A to fill the gaps, although it is not necessary to do so.
