Samaras and Commons guile preferred to Boerrigter tonight

354

You and I both like to see new signings introduced but it would be an enormous gamble to throw Derk Boerrigter into the fray tonight.  The player is unlikely to have trained with his new teammates, will know little about Celtic’s systems, and while Neil Lennon will have watched Derk many times, the real discovery period will be in the weeks to come.  A place on the bench for Derk will be fine.

I’ve been a bit confused by the Moh Bangura debate; can we really care that much if he plays, I mean, we’re not talking about a guy who scored as many goals for us as Daryl Murphy here.  The discourse sounds not dissimilar to some of the ways Jock Stein would manipulate events ahead of a game.  Put the opponent on the back foot from the off, cover all bases.

Key players for Celtic tonight, as always when it comes to Europe, will be Georgios Samaras and Kris Commons.  They have the maturity and guile to know how to deliver, but our defence will need to be alert to what will be the superior fitness of the Elfsborg players, especially late in the game.

    Good afternoon CQNers,

Tough game tonight and one that calls for experience and the same will to win that was displayed at this stage last year.

Many things have happened in the North of Ireland over the years that have caused great sorrow but for me one of the saddest of all was the Miami Showband massacre and today marks the 38th anniversary.

Up to that point musicians were seen as immune from the troubles as they played to mixed (Catholic/Protestant) audiences but a British army captain, Robert Nairac, and the Mid Ulster UVF saw the opportunity to exploit the band’s innocence.

There were many other atrocities, Enniskillen Remembrance massacre, the bombing of McGurk’s bar or the murder of Pat Finucane and each were equally appalling in their viciousness, but for me there was something poignant about the ‘day the music died’.

  10. Wonder if Celtic would be so good as to add a counter on the website, or even better a big electronic sign at the gates, similar to car parks letting us know what the capacity of the kerrydale suite is with live updates.

    Forgot to add eufa.

You can’t stop loanees playing against the parent club in euro competitions.

I get my info from Uefa.

Re skippy. Never disliked a Celtic player more in my life.

The way he celebrated against us THAT Sunday and the wee he was always on Sammi’s back.

I blame him for us not seeing Sammi at his best until the last couple if seasons.

Was delighted when we sold him, don’t ever want to see him back. Not even to do the paradise windfall.

Could not agree more . Don’t know if the Motherwell thing is just in my psyche but they way he treated Sammi was out order. Never detested a serving Celtic player more . One or two are on the list since they left

Downloaded that app for my ipad.

As you say, it’s digital radio.

The game, if on, will be on MW 810.

It is not showing up on the schedule listed for tonight.

Twitter, CQN or car radio, it looks like.

Not going to argue as that’s not why I’m here either. Merely had to question the comparison between Doyle and Sutton. Even if it was more specifically with regards to players who make goals and work for the team more than their game is about banging the ball in the back of the net.

Also would not currently condone spending anything like 6m a season.

5m players demand ludicrous suns of money each year in wages and instantly have a target on their heads if they do not hit the ground running. Isn’t something I’m interested in.

Marquee signings are 95% of the time about the statement the signing makes as opposed to the actual signing. Which this transfer window has summed up pretty much perfectly across Europe. Example 1: Bale for near double the cost of Falcao and treble Cavani!?…

  14. thomthethim, Its on Swedish TV so there is sure to be a stream (sez corkcelt hopefully).

“So the previous players loaded out who never played against us, was because their new team didn’t want to play them,”

What players have been canned in the past?

  16. Stairheedrammy on

I’m at a doo in the Inverkip marina tonight lads and cant make the game- can someone shout in the score every now and again

  17. Geordie Munro on

Lads, re the tune in app.

I’ve never had much success getting 810 mw games on it.

Hope you enjoy better luck than me.

  18. Geordie Munro, If you loan players out within your own league you can make an agreement that they can’t play against their parent Club. However if they go to a different League and you end up meeting them in European Competition you cannot enforce the same rules.

  19. Glendalystonsils likes a mr whippy with his lime green jelly on

Just reading back through the discussion on loan players playing against their parent club.

I always assumed that in the case of SPL teams, it was some kind of gentlemans agreement between managers that loan players would not play against the club they were loaned from.

Looking forward (with a wee bit of trepidation) to tonights game but I’m sure by 9.30 I’l be wondering what all the worry was about.

I’m also looking forward to escaping this diddy league and competing in a league where a club of our size won’t have to play 3 qualifying games while others waltz straight into the group stage.

  20. Would be nice to see ole Derk Boerigtter make his debut tonight, even if he doesn’t get a game some CQN’rs can judge a player by watching him, in the warm up.
