Samaras preparations need a rethink

875

Georgios is hugely important to Celtic on Champions League duty.  His presence and experience is crucial, but his ability to hold the ball up, often the subject of frustration for some in SPL games, is fundamental to Celtic’s chances of playing at this level.

Georgios Samaras hamstring injury, coming late in the first half against Kilmarnock, is a carbon copy of the injury he picked up late in the first half against Berwick Rangers two years ago this month.  Hamstrings mostly to go early in games, or early in the second half, before players muscles are properly warmed and stretched.  It is unusual for a player to get well into a game, when limbs should be stretched, before picking up this kind of injury.  Time for a rethink of the player’s preparations on cold days.

I only saw around 10 minutes of the Scottish Cup tie at Tannadaice this afternoon but was unfortunate to witness Ian Black twice make an offensive hand gesture, once apparently aimed at the Dundee United support.  If he was wearing green  I’m sure he would be dealt with.

Good morning to all Februaryphiles – how do you do it?

  7. Morning Bhoy’s from a damp G81,

I managed to catch Regan on shortbread before heading out last night. His admittance of Sky’s and his own role in the conspiracy to have the zombies placed, at worst, in the second tier within our domestic league structure, circumventing all national association, SPL & SFL rules highlighted in glaring clarity the bare faced corruption that is leading our game into oblivion.

Here we had the chief executive of our National Association admit publicly and without shame that a television broadcaster, yes, you heard it, a television broadcaster, not an association, not a league body, not UEFA or FIFA was making demands that the rules be broken to furnish one team, while mainting the television company, national association and league bodies own financial greed.

Regan’s admission that these demand’s were actively pursued, discussed and planned within all levels of the ruling bodies of our game highlights the reason why our game has descended into such a chronic state of disrepair.

Wether you chose to believe, if indeed Sky demanded the rule book be thrown away, or it was a very poorly played bluff by Regan to spread apocolyptical fear throughout the football community in this country the bottom line is that television money was at the centre of the conspiracy.

Everyday we are confronted with the question, Why is Scottish football in such a mess? The answer to the cause is so blindingly obvious to us all but none of us want to admit it.

Television, television companies and SKY in particular has ruined Scottish football. Add to this the emergence of the internet and illegal streaming of games and the inevitable saturation of viewing not just with our own domestic league but world football in general was gauranteed to happen due to the financial greed of commercialism.

Let’s not be niave above it. Television companies care nothing for rules. Advertising profit outweighs any sense of fair play to these companies.

Now we are in the midst of witnessing how association’s and league bodies can be co-erced and manipulated by the power of the pound. It is an alarming situation which has to be addressed and confronted by every fan of the beautiful game.

When I started going to matches the only television we had was Scotsport or Sportscene highlights on a Saturday evening and a Sunday afternoon. One thing was evident back then. Stadiums were packed.

Television is the cause of lower attendances. Instead of our money going directly to clubs through match day tickets it is instead going to sport channel subscriptions & broadband packages. Fans have become lazy. Why leave your house on a cold wet wednesday evening when you can turn on a computer and watch the game for nothing except for a cheap monthly broadband or sky sports bill.

I said to a friend at the time the 5 point plan was leaked that SKY was behind it. I also said we should tell SKY/ESPN to go multiply. Their financial input to our game is a pittance but yet they hold over reaching power in influencing our association and league bodies into seriously considering breaking the rules.

If that is how football in my country is to be be run then I don’t want a SKY/ESPN or whatever television company deal. I would rather go back to the days of Sportscene & Scotsport highlights and full attendances at 3pm on a saturday.

Until we confront the television manopoly of our game it will continue to slide into further disrepair until it is beyond salvation.

  8. Morning, everyone. Pretty miserable here today, weather-wise.

If we have Foster and Forrest back and able to face Juventus, along with Sammi, our chances are much improved. Mind you, Forrest can’t hope to be match fit. For once, I will be happy if a Celtic player gets a game for Scotland.

Thanks for posting that excellent analytical piece.

I firmly believe that any incarnation of t’rankers exists only to promulgate bigotry, intolerance and anti-Irish immigrant racism, using football as a façade.

Music informs much of my life, as it does for many; at the beginning of a studio version of this song (can’t find the exact one at the moment) a little child can be heard saying, ” Daddy….what is racism? Is it some kind of disease? ” People are not born prejudiced; it is learned, and sevconians have been apt and willing pupils. And this character, Green is yanking them around on his cynical puppet strings. They need severed…and soon.

  10. Hope we show our appreciation to Turnbull Hutton today for his principled stance during the summer months, people like him give us some hope for Scottish football.

He is a man of integrity who deserves our gratitude, a breath of fresh air in an otherwise Sullied game.

Good post, well reasoned and accurate argument

We will still get the EPL SSN updates

  12. Just an idea

but wonder might Dundee Utd suggest paying Sevcos share of the gate DIRECT to whichever charity is proposed.

rather than the charity receiving the share via Chuckles.

You know . Just to be sure

  13. I hope the bhoys give it a big chorus of “One Turnbull Hutton” today. There are still some men of integrity left in the game.

Just saw the highlights of the Dundee United – The Rangers game. The underdogs did well to hold out for the first 14 seconds but then were not good enough. It’s difficult to judge a game from the highlights, but it looked as if United could have scored a few more.

The boy Naysmith deserved his red card for a wild tackle. Black was his usual self and gave even that ref no choice.

  14. Big G,

People need to realise that Sky isn’t a public sector broadcaster. It won’t do anyone any favours; it’s out to make money for its shareholders.

Football long ago made the deal that it would give broadcasters the right to move kick off times and days as it saw fit in return for a big bag of cash. And that genie isn’t going back into the bottle – clubs now rely on the money.

But if football’s leaders start to let a television company interfere with the sporting side of the game by demanding who is in what division then our national game will be no more of a sport than American wrestling.

Like many others, I listened to the Sportsound programme with Stuart Regan last night, and was disappointed with theapparent lack of appetite to challenge Regan on the substantive issues of the last year.

Regan though has not been the unmitigated fool that many portray him as. The complete remodelling of the Dispilinary process was important and has proven to be, and similarly the restructuring of the SFA internally was long overdue.

These changes were perhaps facilitated by the natural objectivity of an outsider looking into the game in Scotland and seeing anachronism piled on top of self interest.

Just as his ‘outsider’ perspective helped reorganising the game’s apparatus, it was I think equally responsible for the shortcoming of his position during huge the events of last year. I think Regan actually believed what he was told, that the game was built upon the ‘Old Firm’, and did whatever he could to defend that foundation.

In essence, Regan’s big mistake was in thinking that the value of the Game in Scotland was built upon its commercial worth, when the bedrock reality is that the commercial worth of the Game is built upon its Values.

  18. SNOOP DOGG WANTS TO BE CELTIC MASCOT V JUVENTUS

Posted on Sunday, 3rd February 2013 by Joe McHugh

Celebrity fan Snoop Dogg wants to be the Celtic mascot against Juventus!

The hip hop superstar has been following the Champions League campaign avidly and wants to lead out Neil Lennon’s side against the Serie A champions.

Tickets are like gold dust for the biggest match that Glasgow has staged in years with the LA based sueperstar desperate for a share od rgw action

“It’s the one I need to go to,” he revealed during an interview in Dubai. “It’s the game we’ve been waiting for.

“I need tickets but I want to walk out with the team like a little kid with the banner. Yes, yes, make it happen. Hail, hail the Celts are here. Yabadabadoo!”

Hoop Dogg added: “I fell in love with the club and what better way to show my support than to be a part of it. I just want to learn more about it and I figured if I become a part of it, I’ll do that.

“I love sports, I’m athletic. All around the world there are different sports that dictate that part of the world you live in – and I just want to be a part of it.

“I have got a big interest in soccer. It’s not new for hip hop stars to invest in sports teams but it is a new thing for hip hop stars to invest in soccer teams.

“I haven’t really thought how much to put in. I don’t need to run the club but I’d like enough of a percentage to get me on the board and be heard.

“I want to bring a bit of Snoop to things. I am passionate about my sport. The boxes at Celtic would never be the same once I have hosted a party there.”

  19. Good Morning Bhoys, Airdrie damp and windy this morning. Mon the Hoops. Still laughing after yesterday hopefully we dont give them a reason to laugh today. ; )

    KLV

  20. i dont think sky or television has killed scottish football, we managed to do that all by ourselves.

    where do you start?

we let t.v dictate terms, not their fault, ours. t.v wants 4 old firm games a season, celtic and rangers wanted the extra income so scottish football bends over, instead of telling them to do one, we jump into bed with them.

celtic and rangers only agree to t.v deal where they get a stupid amount of income above the rest, making it more difficult for the rest to compete.

we accept sh&te t.v contracts because our clubs wont invest in our own football t.v channel even though we know scottish football is getting shafted, why? because our clubs dont want to/ cant invest initially maybe something to do with:

demand for spl clubs to have all seater 10,000 capacity stadium, which drives up debt and leave clubs paying hundreds of thousands of pounds in interest every year. while half the stadium is empty. we remove standing areas and demonise those that wish to stand make noise and singing etc…

we ask people to pay £20 + to watch spl football

we give avarage players millions of pounds (taking out of the game) while fans needs come last. p.s throw in your three or four governing bodies and all the money getting took by all of thems as well.

we treat fans like customers then complain our customers are not backing the club, even though we dont listen to them

we stopped producing skillful players because we valued bigger/ physical players (very few smaller players get a chance post 14 years old in this country)

t.v, imho, is not the enemy we are, our clubs are their own worst enemies. we dont need to reinvent the wheel, what we need is a football environment that recognises its valued, is willing to beleive and invest in its own future and recognises that football clubs are interdependent.

  21. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to see young Rogic today.

Think he could really lucent things up for us from what we’ve seen of the bhoy.
