Scale of Euro achievement underlined

813

Last night my brother reminded me of a comment he made after the 0-0 against Benfica on match day one of the Champions League, “I hope we’re not sitting with one point after five games”.  Expectations can be as high as you like, but reality based on experience at that stage suggested Celtic would struggle to have more than a single point at this stage of the tournament.

A solitary point away from home in our Champions League history would lead the harsh realists to expect our trips to Lisbon, Barcelona and Moscow would be fruitless, leaving the enormous matter of tackling Barcelona at Celtic Park.

Two of those away games resulted in defeat, and we were behind in Moscow before one of the most significant fight-backs in modern Celtic history.  It’s difficult to find perspective for the win over Barcelona.  Suffice to say, they won 0-2 in Lisbon and 0-3 in Moscow.  Celtic’s 2-1 remains the most astonishing result of this season’s Champions League.

Manchester City’s failure to qualify for the knock out stage, with their seemingly limitless budget, tells the story of how difficult this tournament is.  England’s other mega-wealthy club, reigning European champions Chelsea, sacked their manager this week as the expectation they are likely to be eliminated at this stage dawned.

Beating Spartak and qualifying for the knockout stage will be suitable reward for a remarkable team.

The very first CQN Annual is NOW in stock and shipping order yours here! P.S. it’s great.

In case you missed the story, check out the Celtic Trust’s ‘Stand up for the Green Brigade‘ call on the 12th minute on Saturday. Full details on the Trust’s site.

  5. I’ve been to Palestine, good friends of mine have served with the Irish Peace keeping force in South Lebanon, I have spoken at length to them and not one of them have a good word to say about the Israelis, like me they found them arrogant and heartless in their treatment of the Palestinians. Having said that the State of Israel is a de-facto situation and I certainly accept that and accept their right to live without fear of attack. The best way to ensure this is not by present policy of massive reprisals but by solving the problem that is creating all the unrest. The present Palestinian territories are a mish mash of villages & towns some under ” full” Palestinian control others under limited control. There is no coherant entity called Palestine, and month after month the Israelis are continuing to build settlements on Palestinian lands further eroding any possibility of them ever having a viable State of their own. How can Israel pretend they want to reach agreement re a Palestinian State which can live side by side in peace with Israel and at the same time keep on the relentless building of Settlements.

On the local North West BBC tonight they were interviewing Man City fans afterthey went out of CL last night – when one was asked about going into Europa League he said – no we don’t want to go into that – in a dismissive manner – well for a club who won nothing for umpteen years I found that rich – 4 years ago they would have bitten your hand off at the prospect.

  7. where european football is concerned we have done great this season. would bite your hand of for a C/L last 16 spot, but i would have taken a E/L spot when the draw was made, before that i would have settled for a place in the group stages of the C/L. no matter what happens in the coming weeks i’ll be very happy about our progress in european football terms.

however, the trick is to have good runs in european football comp… time and again. that is hard when your best players are been picked up by clubs from the larger league. i hope the scouts are identifying replacements the now, cause its unlikely we will be able to keep victor and hooper looks likely to follow him, well compensated or not.

hopefully a number of good runs in european comp… will make us more attractive to young, hungery players wanting to make a name for themselves

dont forget the desalination plant in Gaza that Israel undermines, the blockade, even of humanitarian supplies, impediments to free movement of persons, desertification, crop burning, army and settler brutality. And occasionally having rocket ships pummel the most densely populated strip of land on the planet. Add all that to the ethnic cleansing in the 40s bad 50s (and that is what it was) and ask who us the aggressor, who the terrorist.

One thing that does disappoint me about the Green Brigade’s boycott of Celtic Park is their failure to communicate with the wider Celtic support. My understanding is that the boycott is aimed at the Club, the same Club which enabled the Green Brigade to coordinate the brilliant pre-match display against Barcelona following the 125th anniversary of the formation of the Club. You will not often find the words co-ordination and boycott in the same sentence. Do not not know all the details, but it appears that the Green Brigade believes that the Celtic Board are complicit in action taken by the Strathclyde Police against one, or more, of it’s members. A serious accusation indeed and one which the Club have only partly addressed, certainly not successfully addressed. Nobody should accept victimisation, or being targeted by the Police, but even the most just of causes, needs as wide a support as possible. The Football Supporters Federation carried out a wide survey, (of attitudes towards the Police) during the summer, and received around 6000 responses, (EPL and Championship) a sizeable number given your average opinion poll is based on 1000 respondents. It was a survey mind you, not a poll, but within it you will find, substantial mistrust and hostility of and towards the Police, particularly from travelling fans. Actually the hostility originates with the Police, and it has engendered, for many, a distrust of the policing of football supporters, and not just in Yorkshire. Only at the weekend a Leeds supporter was hit on the back of the head by a mounted Policeman after the match down in Millwall. The actual report is on the FSF website and well worth the read. I would encourage the Green Brigade to read it too, and to realise that, despite how it sometimes seems, they are not on their own. My advice would be to widen the campaign, engage with the FSF for example, aim for solidarity with as many football groups as possible, place their treatment, at Parkhead, at home, or elsewhere in the context of widespread bigotry against the footballing public, both in Scotland and England. Let us all make it clear to the South Yorkshire or Strathclyde Police, your actions and attitudes are completely unacceptable!
