SCALES, SCHMEICHEL ON WORLD CUP COLLISION COURSE

0

LIAM SCALES and Kasper Schmeichel are on a World Cup collision course after the play-off draws were made this afternoon.

The Celtic defensive double-act will be rivals to qualify for the soccer showpiece in the USA, Canada and Mexico in summer next year if their counties negotiate a path through the semi-finals.

The Republic of Ireland will play away in the Czech Republic in their one-legged last-four encounter while Denmark, who were runners-up to Scotland in their group after their 4-2 loss at Hampden on Tuesday, are at home to North Macedonia.

Scales and Schmeichel may be tasked with locking horns in the Play-Off Path D Final on March 31.

HELPLESS…Kasper Schmeichel is beaten at close range by Lawrence Shankland for Scotland’s second goal in the dramatic 4-2 stoppage-time win over Denmark at Hampden on Tuesday.

Elsewhere, Craig Bellamy’s Wales will host Bosnia and Herzegovina and could then face either Italy or Northern Ireland at home in the final.

The semi-finals will take place on Thursday March 26 and the finals on Tuesday March 31 with kick-off times of 5pm or 7.45pm.
The winners of the four play-off finals qualify for the World Cup and complete the field of 16 European participants.
