CELTIC defender Liam Scales saw red as the Republic of Ireland crashed 5-0 against England at Wembley tonight.
The UEFA Nations League encounter was balanced at 0-0 five minutes after the interval when the Hoops centre-back was adjudged to have brought down Jude Bellingham in the box.
The Belgian referee immediately awarded the hosts a penalty-kick and dismissed Scales who had picked up an innocuous yellow card in the first-half.
The sending-off was a travesty for the Dubliner who had been playing extremely well against Lee Carsley’s side up to that point.
However, it all unravelled for the visitors in a disastrous six-minute spell when Harry Kane swept in the resultant spot-kick and Anthony Gordon and Connor Gallagher, with their first goals for their country, netted two quickfire strikes to turn the game on its head.
It got worse for the 10-man Irish team as Jarrord Bowen and Taylor Harwood-Bellis took the scoring to five.
On the positive side for Scales, he is fit and will be included in Brendan Rodgers’ squad for the Saturday night trip to Tynecastle to take on Hearts.
