Scant compensation in Lisbon

369

Is it any compensation that POAK, who finished second to AEK last season, drew 1-1 against Benfica in Lisbon, in the Champions League playoff first leg last night?  Not really, but it is a marker of the standard required to beat the Greek champions.  POAK eliminated Basel 5-1 on aggregate two rounds ago.  Greece are likely to have two teams in the group stage.

What might have been is irrelevant, it is more important to perform to the level required in Lithuania tomorrow evening.  Celtic are far stronger than Suduva, but you and I have seen what happens when a Celtic team let standards drop away in Europe, even for a short period of a game.

There have been lots of posts on CQN over the past year saying that Lusting is now a liability. Why couldn’t the manager see this? It’s too easy to blame the board for everything. BR deservedly gets the credit when we qualify for the CL. When we fail he must take the blame.

100% correct. I guess the suggestions of needing a better RB had gone quiet recently so I thought I would throw some petrol on the fire:-) I think Piccini would have been great. He played for Valencia is a 1-1 with Atletico at the weekend. Anyway for whatever reason we missed out on the top target….is there no number 2 on the list?? I do agree with Rodgers when he says we could sign lots of players but he is only looking for quality. In the gap between Lustig/ Gamboa level and Piccini level there are surely players we can afford that would want to play for us!!

We made an offer for McKenna . It was turned down so he is staying where he is.

None of the above are positives but I do believe that the reaction has been almost hysterical.

the fact that McKenna is not coming to us is a big positive , the negative is who at the club thought he is any better than what we currently have and offer allegedly £3.5m for a dud.

  4. Big Mik has never been the player he was since he had the Hip operations. It has impaired his mobility. He does not get up and down the wing as he used to.No overlaps for Forrest. Not Miks fault, happens to so many players.Any team playing at pace down our left side is going to cause problems.Worries me that BR could not see that.Great servant and player for our club, but now its time for Gamboa to be starting .I dont think there is a great need for another RB,as whenever we get the CHs sorted Brendan will play 3 at the back to accomodate two strikers,in most games.Just one big, experienced ,commanding CH,please Celtic.

  5. NIALLO83,

The West Brom manager thought him a very good player, but too small for a defender at set pieces etc.His words.

Probably has a point about that.IMHO,he is the best crosser of the ball we have.

  6. Congerton left at Lennoxtown to go through that extensive list of defenders he has gathered.Should have quite a few as I hear he has clocked up around 180 miles in his car,and has racked up 64 Air Miles.

    The hunt goes on.

It’s unfortunate that both Gamboa and Izzy are on the small side for defenders, as they offer a lot going forward. I agree about Lustig though. Whether we play 3 or 4 at the back ,it’s important that we have players who can block a cross , something we struggle with. Midfield players who can get back to help the defence when required would also help.

Agree re. O’Donnell, thought he was the best right back that played against us in SPL

last season. I think we need to strengthen at RB more than CH.

I’m sorry but Gamboa isn’t a very good defender. Decent going forward but that’s about it.

I would agree with you on Gamboa. I was thinking that the manager would be using 3 at the back with wing backs more this season,, that’s what he did all pre season, but injuries, suspensions and industrial action have left us short of CHs so he’s not had a chance to play it in competitive games. Gamboa is a good wing back, World Cup showed that.

  11. Totally agree regards gamboa.

Sad cos the wee guy gets us , but that’s the problem he is too wee .same with Emilio, but he is just an understudy to KT . With regards to killie,s odonnell, must say he caught my eye as well . But I am a fan of big no nonsense defenders , something we need badly, and urgently . I’m also a huge

fan of rough tough no prisoners midfielders ,another thing we need badly and urgently , to help brownie, as what he is subject to now is way over the top , and although we have quality in midfield , neither rogic. McGregor, sinclaire or Forrest are going to battle for you . I don’t hold out any hope for my wish list being achieved , this is Celtic after all

Jozo signed a 4 year deal last year. It’s all went downhill from there.

    Re blame for not qualifying.

You could argue that BR has over performed in the last two years in achieving CL qualification (especially given the relatively small net spend).

This year the CL bar was raised. We had record turnover and profit to utilise to assist in qualification and, if anything, we regressed. BR was asked to qualify with the same team even though they would face a greater challenge. For that reason, I don’t think you can lay it all at Brendan’s door, or even the lion share of the blame.
