Scarce optimism

281

You and I have lived through dark days before, but even during the darkest time in the 90s, we faced Rangers with a collective degree of self-belief.  The lack of faith among the support over the visit of Newco tomorrow is tangible, with good reason.

Bournemouth’s USA-born Mexico international right back Julián Araujo could bolster our options on that flank after his loan arrival.  He will surely start tomorrow. The player has made only one appearance this season, an EFL cup defeat to Brentford, so we should temper any anticipation he will sail through the afternoon.

Before every game recently I talk about the very obvious lessons learned from the previous outing.  We will surely not repeat the positional shambles deployed at Motherwell on Tuesday.  The formations which faced Aberdeen and Livingston will suffice, possibly augmented by Araujo.

Against Hearts, St Mirren, Dundee United and Aberdeen, Celtic hit the woodwork at least as many times as they scored.  The laws of mathematics suggests we are in for an avalanche when our flattering expected goals tally delivers what it promises.  That’s about as much optimism as I can muster.

Hope game gets snowed aff the ‘morra. That’s ny wish.

Other than that it’ll be ‘interesting’ viewing. Quality wise it should be Tisdaleesque, a game for the StevenAGES.

I can’t watch us & hope for anything other than a win so that’s what I’ll do. Then fret about the result of such a result.

  4. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    From BBC

Nancy said: “We are delighted to bring Julian to Celtic. He is a really talented player with a good level of experience and we think the qualities he will bring will be really beneficial to the squad.”

  5. Scottish Premiership: Celtic v Rangers

Venue: Celtic Park, Glasgow Date: Saturday, 3 January Time: 12:30 GMT

Coverage: Listen on BBC Radio Scotland & Sounds, live text commentary on the BBC Sport website & app, highlights on BBC Scotland & iPlayer from 19:15

Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy launched a passionate defence of his methods and stressed he will need to be given time to succeed at the club during a remarkable media conference.

The Frenchman has lost five of his first seven matches in charge after taking over from interim boss Martin O’Neill at the start of December.

Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat at Motherwell piled further pressure on the former Columbus Crew head coach, who has faced criticism from Celtic supporters.

Nancy’s side are three points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts and three ahead of Glasgow rivals Rangers, who they host on Saturday.

Nancy insisted: “The board is with me, the club is with me, and the players are with me.”

And he says the “context” of his arrival must be factored in when judging his reign to date.

“As you know, I need time,” he said. “Give me time and you’re going to see what I do. You can already see what I did before because I didn’t start yesterday.

“I’m going to be a liar if I say, ‘everything is happy, everything is good’. No, it’s not the case, but I knew that before.

“That’s why I’m calm during all the questions you ask me. I’m not pleased to hear people don’t like me, but they have the right to say it because in terms of results, this is not what we want.

“Tomorrow is a big game. But the context is that I’ve only had 13 training sessions with my team. Usually we have four weeks of pre-season.

“It’s totally normal that you guys kill me. I’m fine with that because I know where I want to go. Judge me in a few weeks or months. If you want to judge me now, you can do it. I didn’t have the results we wanted – it’s a fact, I cannot deny that.”

Nancy says he will “die” to achieve his goals at Celtic and believes results under him have not reflected performances.

“It’s totally normal my players need a bit of time and are confused at certain moments,” he explained.

“It’s a process. I don’t like the word ‘process’ because people think I am going to hide behind ‘process’, but it’s true.

“Judge me, no problem, but have a look at the games since I have been here and analyse if we should have won or lost. Do it.

“I am a clear guy. For the moment, I cannot talk because results are not good enough. I shut my mouth and I take it, but I know where we are going. After that, if it’s going to work or not, I don’t know. We are going to do everything to do it and I am here for that.

“Yes, I want to win every game. Yes, I want to win titles. I want to create a legacy here. I am going to die for this club, for sure.”

  6. Have seen both managers pressers today

First time in decades Govan works team have the advantage in the dug out

Sausage Rohl is the superior coach

  8. Stephenbhoyboy on

To be fair to nancy he said he is going to die for this club, looks like the players have already started on his behalf. If we dont get a win tomorrow the ground with either be toxic or empty, in dact it might be both

  9. I felt WN was hung out to dry at that presser. Somebody from the club should have been sitting with him.

Apart from the obvious language difficulties, he was left totally exposed.

This reminded me when NFL was left to explain the decision to go to Dubai.during the Covid era. I felt the clubs legal advisor should have been there .

Shocking decisions by our current custodians.

  10. Reality check. This team has been flat , hot n cold, not easy on the eye for a year now. Nancy is not a miracle worker , neither was Rodgers – we got bounce of MON but it wasn’t always the style we expect. The team needs new players.

Nancy showed passion today – he deserves a bit of time to get 2-3 players to validate his style.

The best managers in the planet – ever – can do anything about our lack of striking talent or height in the box ! He’s not a magician

Good luck tomorrow and Celtic fans – get a grip. Happy new year and green brigade gtf with your demonstrations that harm the team on the pitch. Not happy? Stand outside offices after the match or don’t show up at all.

Celtic Park will be ringing out with the Billy Boys, Famine Song, No Pope in Rome a couple of good Irish and Scottish songs changed to words of hate. Without the GB, The Celtic support will be silent.,Celtic are the only club in Britain who have banned their Ultras. Other clubs let the football authorities deal with their excesses and there has been real excesses at other grounds recently regarding flares. with yougsters being injured and the clubs concerned taking absolutely no action.

The GB are just a group of pretty fanatical Celtic supporters just like the ones in the old stadium that used to frequent the Jungle. I’ve been supporting Celtic since 1950, we’ve always had a rebellious section of the support.

Most of the Celtic support have always politically been in support of the discriminated and persecuted of the World. If you don’t like any kind of politics in football then Celtic aren’t the team for you.

Maybe that’s what’s wrong with DD and the present board, “They do not know their History”

  27. Absolutely Bada. CM should get the subs into The Huddle along with the starters and tell them all:

“We’ve beaten them enough times before. Let’s play the way we did in those games and get the job done. If Nancy tells us to do anything differently during the game, ignore him! And if he drags you off for not following his instructions, whoever comes on in your place is on board with the rest of us. Let’s do this our way and show him what actually works in the SPL.”

how do you avoid paying corporation tax ?

  31. Bet £80 at the bookies if you think Celtic won’t win tomorrow.

If they don’t then you’ll either get £150 or £160 back.

If they do then you’ve lost your £80.

Personally, I think £20m CalMac and co will do the business.

It’s a fair point – I’d far rather they listened to CM than WN – but the sad truth is that since Sep 24 we’ve only beaten them once – in the last game – in 6 matches.

Leaving aside all of the crap we’ve covered ourselves in in the last few weeks / months I fear that the muscle memory, let alone confidence, from horsing them regularly just isn’t there any more.
