Scarce optimism

281

You and I have lived through dark days before, but even during the darkest time in the 90s, we faced Rangers with a collective degree of self-belief.  The lack of faith among the support over the visit of Newco tomorrow is tangible, with good reason.

Bournemouth’s USA-born Mexico international right back Julián Araujo could bolster our options on that flank after his loan arrival.  He will surely start tomorrow. The player has made only one appearance this season, an EFL cup defeat to Brentford, so we should temper any anticipation he will sail through the afternoon.

Before every game recently I talk about the very obvious lessons learned from the previous outing.  We will surely not repeat the positional shambles deployed at Motherwell on Tuesday.  The formations which faced Aberdeen and Livingston will suffice, possibly augmented by Araujo.

Against Hearts, St Mirren, Dundee United and Aberdeen, Celtic hit the woodwork at least as many times as they scored.  The laws of mathematics suggests we are in for an avalanche when our flattering expected goals tally delivers what it promises.  That’s about as much optimism as I can muster.

Personally I don’t think the club has helped him much.

I don’t think he comes across to well.

I think he has a poor squad lacking confidence in themselves and each other. Never mind trying to make them change.

I think his point re 13 sessions either the team is valid. Maybe he could have called this differently re getting a handover. Many suggested this.

I still reckon it is unfair to view 7 games and no window with this squad as a sample.

Motherwell was very poor. I do agree.

I will still be giving him 150% backing tomorrow. As I will the team.

Others may not care but personally I still want us and not rangers to win the league this season.

  2. Just watched WN presser today. He’s either a mad genius on the verge of something spectacular, or a disaster waiting to happen. If we lose tomorrow this madness has to end. Simply astonishing.

10/10 for optimism, I was a guy who up to a couple of months ago was willing to support the Board, in the belief that intelligent men would surely make peace with their core support and have a plan to appoint a capable experienced manager, then make the necessary January signings.

They have failed miserably to carry out the first two tasks, in fact they have made the relationship with our support even worse than it was.

They then make an axse of the 2nd task, by appointing a rookie manager from a League that is very uncompetitive, where finishing in the top 7 is acceptable and no relegation is allowed. My Celtic supporting family in the US were aghast at this appointment.

By accusing people of being Hunlopers you are showing desperation in your continued support for this useless Board, who have taken this club into a crisis of their own making.

They may be intelligent men in their own specialities, but quite honestly they are failing badly in the administration of Scotland’s leading football club.

It’s like watching the last days of the Western Roman Empire, who in its final few years, the ruling class, from emperors to bureaucrats, systematically plundered the state’s resources for personal gain, (El Pistolero, i am looking at you, scuttling off with 21 million) neglected core responsibilities of defense (midfield and forward areas) and justice, and made a series of short-sighted, avaricious decisions that alienated their own population, bankrupted the state, and turned potential allies into mortal enemies.

Their greed broke the economic system, and their incompetence broke the political and military system.

They failed to be effective rulers, choosing instead to be predators upon their own empire until there was nothing left to prey upon.

Who will be the beneficiaries of this folly?

    The Barbarians of course.

    Pay attention.

  16. There was a line in Nancy’s presser today where he appeared to suggest that he thinks that all the noise about the current situation is unfair with the team sitting second in the league, and perhaps he could understand it if they were at the bottom of the league.

Just to ensure clarity of the facts, here is the SPL table based on matches since Nancy took over on Dec 4th:

    1 rangers 12 points (+5 goal diff)

    2= Hibs 10 (+5)

    2= Motherwell 10 (+5)

    4 Hearts 9 (+3)

    5 Dundee Utd 9 (+1)

    6 St Mirren 7 (+2)

    7= Dundee 7 (-1)

    7= Aberdeen 7 (-1)

    9th CELTIC 6 (0)

    10 Falkirk 3 (-5)

    11 Kilmarnock 1 (-6)

    12 Livingston 1 (-8)

Does he seriously think that this is acceptable for a team that has won 13 of the last 14 league titles, including 5 trebles in that time, and which was equal top with a game in hand when he took office?

    I certainly don’t.

  17. Ok guys ,we are all Celtic supporters,we will win tomorrow but know that we are far off what we want to be.

    Burnley,

    You are just gaslighting.

Having been accused of same in a KevJ ramble I checked the meaning of the word.

It is covered in full at

    https://theabigailproject.org/what-is-gaslighting/?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=15143580472&gbraid=0AAAAAoKDnXkdHoo5NYY8YkfOswY9_EeVq&gclid=Cj0KCQiA9t3KBhCQARIsAJOcR7x9Fgle-Tvnj1Fn6k0zxNnf9hlZekqjwGFZpP6Ww6gKAH7AxlMfQsMaAgFzEALw_wcB

but this is the key takeaway:

Gaslighting is a type of lying where both of you know the truth, but one is convincingly denying it.

It follows that as no one knows the actual truth but has their own perception of it, that then swapping perceptions cannot be gaslighting.

I have a version of the truth but am open to other perceptions that might change my mind as I know that whilst I have have good reason from experience to think I know the truth, I might in due course of time might encounter something that changes my perception. Nudges me nearer to The Truth.

I think that if we were all a bit less precious about our perceptions being honestly challenged with reasons from another with a different perception it then as human beings we will learn more about the truth from each other.

Gaslighting to me would be actually knowing something was true, but trying to convince others that what they also perceived as true, was not true so in order to gain something as a result

That was basis of the play.

When it comes to thinking we know the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, I recommend being like Manuel from Barcelona in Fawlty Towers for a few minutes.

For aw that an aw that I am puzzled that DD must have approved WN.

To try to make sense of it all, are we the support are still thinking that the SPFL will be a two horse race between us and them?

The table as it stands sees us 3 behind Hearts and 3 ahead of Rangers for all our poor performances.

Motherwell, Hibs and Dundee Utd are all capable of taking points off all top three and St Mirren are hard to beat.

So is the fact the SPFL is more competitive not a factor at play in Boardthink? ( (c) Auldheid)

Competition is what brings the crowds in, although it could be it is having an adverse effect on us as a support who have got used to not having any competition domestically.

Last week I posted a link to a CU article called the The Natural End which sets out the extent of the team overhaul required. I have produced the article in full at the end.

Taking both factors together is it possible WN has been brought in to move Celtic from Roger’s safety first thinking, which frustrates me when I see a player play a short pass sideways or backwards when a long ball is on, but risky.

Is DD playing a longer term game that will stop the decline?

Even if he is, I wish Celtic would address all the factors that increase the risk by being more open with the support and work to change the “them and us” culture that is, imo, the root cause of removing the joy and pleasure of supporting Celtic win, lose or draw.

The divide is a turn off for me.

Here is The Celtic Underground article.

    The Natural End

    And a natural rebuild opportunity

    The Celtic Underground

    Dec 30

Much of the debate around Celtic’s next phase has centred on the manager (stick or twist on Wilfried), structure (3-4-3) and personalities (The Collective v The Board). But strip away the noise and the reality is far more prosaic. Celtic are approaching a natural end of a squad cycle, one driven not by ideology or impatience, but by contracts, wages and basic arithmetic.

Much of the issues outlined here are not about the January window, but what will happen in the summer. Start with the players whose contracts expire this summer. James Forrest, Simpson-Pussey, Kasper Schmeichel, Kelechi Iheanacho and Marcelo Saracchi collectively account for roughly £5.7 million per year in wages. Some departures will be emotional, others barely noticed, but financially this is clean, automatic release. No transfer negotiations, no sell-on arguments, no amortisation debates. The wage bill simply falls.

Next are players entering the final year of their deals, where Celtic historically either sell or risk value erosion. Daizen Maeda sits firmly in this category. At roughly £1.5m pa, and with a plausible £5m+ transfer value, Maeda represents a classic “act now or lose later” decision. Keep him and renew at higher wages, or sell and reinvest. He wanted to go last summer and has said he wants to stay through January (for family and World Cup reasons) but he’s sure to want away in the summer and we’re sure to enable him.

Then there is the group with two years remaining, typically the sweet spot for maximising sales value while still retaining leverage. Reo Hatate, Arne Engels and Yang fall into this bracket. Combined, they cost around £3.5m per year in wages, and could realistically generate £12–15m in transfer income. Whether supporters agree with selling any or all of them is almost beside the point; clubs operating sustainably realy should churn assets at this stage of the cycle.

Finally, there is the group that may simply be moved on because they have no value and manager(s) clearly aren’t rating them: Johnny Kenny, Shin Yamada, Inamura, Luis Palma (currently on loan), Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Najamin Nygren and now clearly Paulo Bernardo. Bernardo is not being fancied, has struggled for consistent minutes, and looks an obvious sale rather than a core rebuild piece.

Taken together, this cohort represents at least £2.5–3m in annual wage savings, with £7–8m in potential transfer income. Put all of this together and the numbers are stark:

£10–11m off the annual wage bill

    £18–22m in transfer income

Achieved largely through contract position, not panic selling

This is before January business is even considered. Celtic will almost certainly act in the winter market, but realistically that will be a mix of loans and selective purchases (perhaps two of each?) designed to get players closer to the manager’s system rather than overhaul it. The heavy lifting is coming in the summer, because it has to.

No matter who the manager is, the lack of quality in the final third demands major work. If it is Wilfried Nancy, the requirement becomes even more acute. His system demands technical bravery, positional intelligence and players comfortable receiving under pressure. But even without Nancy, the conclusion is the same: this group has reached the end of its cycle.

Crucially, these outgoing wages and sales directly address the UEFA cost-control constraints referenced by Dermot Desmond in his statement following Brendans’ departure. Reduced wage ratios and improved transfer headroom ease those shackles without austerity or stagnation.

Celtic are being handed a rebuild on a plate. The funds are there. The timing is there. The squad cycle is ending naturally.

Which brings us to the uncomfortable question: would you trust Paul Tisdale to oversee this rebuild?

    I wouldn’t.

Nancy appears utterly delusional. Utterly irrational to come in, tear everything up when you have no idea what your team’s strengths are. In any walk of life. If we are to lose I hope we lose convincingly so we can all move on. Obv would be ecstatic to be proved wrong. But if this was happening at Ibrox we would all hope he stays in the job.
