SCHMEICHEL D-DAY

KASPER SCHMEICHEL is poised to undergo a medical today before his move to Celtic gets the go-ahead.

The 37-year-old Denmark international keeper, currently on a family holiday in Italy following his four games in the Euros 24 for his country, was set for tests at the weekend, but they were unavoidably delayed.

Schmeichel, who is a free agent after quitting Belgian outfit Anderlecht in the summer, has agreed to the move to reunite with his former Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers at the champions.

However, the iconic netminder has had to be patient and a report in Danish media outlet Tipsbaldet explained: “The clinics in Italy moved the time to Tuesday.”

ON THE BALL – AND ON THE MOVE…Danish legend Kasper Schmeichel is preparing for the green light to join Celtic.

Schmeichel is expected to sail through the examination before signing a one-year contract with the option of another 12 months.

The towering Dane will take over from the retiring Joe Hart who called it quits after the 1-0 Scottish Cup Final victory over Rangers at Hampden on May 25.

The 75 times-capped Englishman, also 37, won seven trophies – including three titles – during his three years at Parkhead following his bargain £1million switch from Spurs in August 2021.

It is hoped his replacement will catch up with his new team-mates in Washington on Thursday as they prepare for the weekend friendly against DC United in their three-game tour of The States.

Rodgers’ men are also scheduled to play Schmeichel’s former club Manchester City and Chelsea before the Premiership kicks off against Kilmarnock in the east end of Glasgow on Sunday August 4.

A BIG HAND…Celtic target Viljami Sinisalo acknowledges the Exeter City fans following his final loan appearance after his move from Aston Villa last season.

Meanwhile, the Hoops are reportedly closing in on Aston Villa’s Finnish international keeper Viljami Sinisalo.

The 22-year-old shotstopper, valued at £1million, has yet to make a first-team appearance for the Midlands side.

Sinisalo, capped three times by his country, made 50 outings on loan at third-tier Exeter City last season.

He will join Scott Bain as stand-by for Schmeichel with Swiss netminder Benji Siegrist, who made a substitute appearance in the 5-3 win over Queen’s Park last week, heading for the exit.
