SCHMEICHEL GREEN LIGHT: ANOTHER ON WAY?

CELTIC are on the brink of sealing a one-year deal with legendary Danish keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Brendan Rodgers views his former Leicester City No.1 as the ideal replacement for the retiring Joe Hart.

Schmeichel, who will be 38 in November, is a free agent after leaving Belgian outfit Anderlecht in the summer.

The towering shotstopper spent 12 months in Brussels after joining from Nice.

Now he is poised to sign for his fourth club in rapid fashion after quitting the King Power side in the summer of 2022.

GREEN FOR GO…Kasper Schmeichel is poised for Celtic deal.

Negotiations are at an advanced stage for the international star to reunite with Rodgers at the champions, according to a report in the Daily Record.

The Hoops hope to get the deal done within the next 48 hours, but it is unclear if Schmeichel, who played in his nation’s four games in Euro 24 in Germany before being knocked out by the hosts in the quarter-finals, will be with the travelling squad that is due to fly out to America a week today.

Asked about the possibility of the iconic Dane coming to Celtic, Rodgers, speaking last week, answered: “Kasper is a very, very good one. I know Kasper really well.

“But there are lots of names and, clearly, I am not going to tell you who those names are.”

The one-time Manchester City star will provide a quick fix for Rodgers as the manager seeks a quality replacement for Hart, who won seven honours – including three successive titles – in his three years at Parkhead.

NO WAY THROUGH…Kasper Schmeichel blocks a close-range shot from Che Adams in Scotland’s 2-0 win over Denmark at Hampden in November 2021.

The 105 times-capped Dane won the Premier League and FA Cup – the latter when Rodgers was in charge – with the Midlands club.

Schmeichel has previous knowledge of Scottish football after a loan spell at Falkirk from the Etihad outfit in 2007.

Rodgers will continue to scour the market for another keeper with Swiss custodian Benji Siegrist looking for a move.

Hoops scouts have been monitoring Sparta Prague’s Peter Vandahl-Jensen while they have also been linked with Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka.

Scott Bain has started the two pre-season friendlies against Ayr United and Queen’s Park, but Rodgers has also utilised Siegrist and youngsters Josh Clarke and Toby Oluwayemi in the games.
