CELTIC face an anxious wait to see if Kasper Schmeichel will be fit to face Hearts at Parkhead when the Premiership restarts on Saturday afternoon.
The 38-year-old keeper sustained a shoulder injury in Denmark’s 5-2 extra-time loss to Portugal in the UEFA Nations League play-off second leg in Lisbon last night.
Schmeichel was clearly struggling after a diving at the feet of Diogo Jota as the Portuguese striker netted in the added-on period, but then saw the goal disallowed for offside.
The Danish captain received onfield treatment before carrying on for the remainder of the tie in obvious discomfort.
STRANDED…Kasper Schmeichel is left exposed as Cristiano Ronaldo nets one of Portugal’s five goals in their 5-2 win over Denmark.
On a heartbreaking evening for Schmeichel and his team-mates, they saw their 1-0 first leg advantage wiped out as they lost 3-2 in the regulation 90 minutes with the game going into an extra half-hour.
The hosts netted twice to claim a 5-3 aggregate victory. Schmeichel saved a penalty-kick from Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who did manage to get on the scoresheet, but the keeper’s heroics were in vain.
Now the netminder could miss his first league game of the season if he does not recover from this setback.
The Hoops medical team will examine the extent of the injury tomorrow when training resumes.
Finnish international Viljami Sinisalo, whose only appearance since his £1million summer arrival was in the 5-0 Scottish Cup win over Raith Rovers last month, is standing by to face the Tynecastle side.
