KASPER SCHMEICHEL made a welcome and surprise return to training at Lennoxtown today as Celtic prepared for the Premiership game against St Johnstone in Perth on Sunday.
It was an unexpected appearance from the 38-year-old keeper who sustained a shoulder injury in Denmark’s 5-2 UEFA Nations League defeat against Portugal in Lisbon almost a fortnight ago.
Brendan Rodgers revealed this week that it could be up to six weeks before Schmeichel returned to action although the Hoops boss also refused to rule out the veteran shotstopper for the season, as CQN reported.
THUMB’S UP…Kasper Schmeichel’s message to Celtic fans.
Schmeichel joined his team-mates at the champions’ training HQ and showed no visible signs of support on the damaged left arm.
He went through the early warm-up session which was enough to fuel speculation he was about to make a dramatic quickfire comeback after being sidelined for last weekend’s 3-0 victory over Hearts at Parkhead when Viljami Sinisalo deputised for the Great Dane.
However, the Finnish international will face the Perth Saints on Sunday with Scott Bain as back-up in the matchday squad.
The appearance of Schmeichel will be an encouraging sight for Rodgers.
