SCHMEICHEL UPDATE

KASPER SCHMEICHEL’S future remains in doubt as he awaits news of potential surgery on his career-threatening shoulder injury.

The 39-year-old Celtic keeper looks to have played his last game for the champions with his contract due to expire in two months’ time.

Schmeichel’s last appearance for the Hoops was in the 2-1 Premiership loss to Hibs at Parkhead on February 22.

There are fears the Danish legend, who joined the Parkhead club as a free agent after leaving Anderlecht in the summer of 2024, will never play again.

A BIG HAND…Kasper Schmeichel acknowledges the Celtic support.

Schmeichel suffered the injury on international duty while playing against Portugal in Lisbon just over a year ago.

Viljami Sinisalo has taken over the No.1 position in his absence and has played in the last nine games including Sunday’s dramatic 6-2 Scottish Cup semi-final victory over St Mirren with Ross Doohan as back-up.

Offering an update on Schmeichel’s situation, Martin O’Neill, speaking to the Scottish Sun, said: “He is still contracted to the club, yes.

“There are some medical decisions to be made on whether he’s to get this operation.

“I will know more about that in the middle of the week.

“But I have been speaking to the medical staff who were telling me he was going to see a specialist.

“I don’t know whether the specialist wants to do this operation or not. “

Schmeichel has already started punditry work in England and abroad which has upset some Hoops fans.

The former Manchester City and Leicester City star took in Pep Guardiola’s team’s 2-1 win over Arsenal on Sunday while Celtic were in action against the Saints at Hampden.
