SCHMEICHEL’S ANGUISH

KASPER SCHMEICHEL’S heroics went for nothing when he was beaten by a deflected shot in Denmark’s 1-0 loss in their UEFA Nations clash against Spain in Murcia.

The Celtic keeper had twice denied Alvarez Morata before the European champions claimed the winner 11 minutes from time.

Schmeichel was taken off guard as a drive from outside the box by Martin Zubimendi took a deflection off a Danish defender to elude the netminder low down at his left-hand post.

DENIED…Kasper Schmeichel foils Spanish dangerman Alvarez Morata.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY…Kasper Schmeichel is beaten by Spain’s defelcted winner.

The Hoops shotstopper had also been distrated in the build-up as he applealed for a foul by Mikle Merino on Victor Nelsson before the ball fell to the Real Sociedad midfielder who got lucky when his first-time effort struck an opponents’ heel on its way into the net.

It was a cruel way for Schmeichel and his team-mates to lose after a commendable rearguard action throughout the second-half with the hosts eager to put on a show for their fans.

Afterwards, the legendary Dane, speaking to Bold, explained: “It’s one of those situations as a keeper. I didn’t see the ball to begin with. It hit Pierre and then I actually had to gamble a little bit.
“It went to my left and I didn’t manage to read the screw on the ball. And then I got a little too far over it. That’s life as a goalkeeper, that something like this can happen.“Every time a goal is scored, I will always look back and see that there is something I could do better. If you’ve been in there, you know what it’s like. It doesn’t always look good on TV.”

Spain controlled the game, but were thwarted by Schmeichel and on other occasions their finishing was wasteful.
At the other end, Arsenal No.1 David Raya twice made excellent saves to foil Kasper Dolberg.
The Spaniards lead the group at the halfway mark with seven points from their three games, followed by the Danes on six and Serbia on four, with Switzerland still waiting for their first win.
