Schmeichel’s distribution

181

Kasper Schmeichel had very little to do against Kilmarnock on Sunday, however, the most notable aspect of his play was his distribution.  On four occasions he swept an early ball to a Celtic player around the halfway line.

This ability is the new normal at elite level in England and is why outstanding keepers, like Fraser Forster, never made the step up, and why Joe Hart lost his spot at Manchester City.  A keeper being able to find a teammate with a 40-yard pass curtails an opponent’s ability to press our defence, which creates space for everyone during the build-up period.

Teams will react to Schmeichel and it will be interesting to see how this plays out on smaller pitches.  I expect we will see the central defenders and Callum McGregor get more space.

Is it possible to relax without being complacent?

    (I believe it is)

PS – yip, I thought Kasper’s distribution beyond the first layer of the high press was noteworthy.

it only has a regulatory requirement in relation to factors (which should be disclosed within said statement) that could impact “investor decisions” etc etc

The original statement itself disclosed that following the closure of the “summer transfer window”, underway, the club will then be in a position to “confirm” the “extent of its’ earnings”. for the year ending June 30 2024. Ergo what happens between now and the end of the transfer window (in terms of player trading) will impact on those earnings even if outwith the FY ending 30-6-24. There are no other references in the statement. As I understand it Celtic PLC will interpret any “profit” from eg the sale of Matt O’Reilly as being part of the recent FY year, a process which could in effect be questionable accounting and indeed reporting. It cannot possibly be about Celtic signing new players, they would be included in the new, present, FY 24-25. The follow up statement issued today by Celtic PLC does not clarify the situation, but adds further confusion to the mix. Certainly will not have an adverse impact on the recent and current share price, albeit to what end, but will it have a positive impact on our prospects on the pitch in the new Champions League? On verra…

  6. Day 54 in the Celtic Transfer Angst window

So many things to find Celtic a disgrace and an embarrassment.

We’ve not got Adam Idah yet.

We’ve too much money in the books- and the Board are just gonna steal it

We’ve not got a back up left back (if you discount Matt Anderson & Mitchell Frame).

We’ve not got replacement for O’Riley, Kyogo or Hatate who are all going

Only 24 days left to rectify this and forecasts are being made that we’ll sign nobody.

    Yet:-

We had a great set of pre season results

We won our opener by 4 goals

We are, so far, playing with more style than last year.

We’ve lost Hart & Siegrist and replaced them with Schmeichel & Sinisalo- no downgrade at all

Of last year’s outfield contributors, we’ve lost loanee Idah and 3rd string striker, Oh.

And we have 24 days to get people in. With 2and a half weeks to prepare for 1st CL tie.

Are we angsting because we genuinely believe no one will be signed?

Are we angsting because we think our money reserves will be stolen?

Are we angsting because it’s a widespread state amongst fellow supporters?

I think we will end up with some good additions to this already strong squad. Am I being complacent to think 24 days is well long enough in the transfer window as it has proven to be in almost all of our previous transfer windows?

As I said the other day on SC, not too concerned about the lack of traction with transfers. The nonchalant behaviour of Brendan suggests to me he has a few irons in the fire and expects them to be delivered this window.

    Re Transfer Angst Window SFTB…

An omission from both the teeth gnashing and chill out lists is the fact that Brendan has stated and repeated in several pressers that proven quality needs to be added. But mibby Brendan’s just getting angsty anaw.

  9. Celtic Mac on 7th August 2024 1:25 pm

I do not read the statement that way at all.

They are issuing the update that for the financial year just ended 30th Jun 2023/24 there will be higher revenue than previously expected some due to transfer activity I assume Abada at £7m to Charlotte in March (outwith normal scottish transfer windows). and beyond the half year accounting results.

Transfermarket has Celtic plc spending 25 million euros on transfers in, but taking in 45 million euros in transfers out.

The summer transfer activity after 30th jun will be in 2024/25 accounts.

They cannot put any financial transactions after 30th jun into last years accounts,

Example Jota, sold on 3rd July 2024. goes into last years accounts, not booked in the year before.

  10. The original statement itself disclosed that following the closure of the “summer transfer window”, underway, the club will then be in a position to “confirm” the “extent of its’ earnings”. for the year ending June 30 2024.

    ————–

dont laugh but, the executive are so busy working on the current transfer window that we have not yet finished doing last years accounts with the auditors.

that is how i would read that.

  11. Early balls played with pace are all very wel, however its about the quality of the receiver to take a good first touch.

Scales and Taylor scare me under those circumstances

  12. SFTB @ 1:27

It’s a good question. My angst may be due to one or three things

    1. Greed and entitlement. I’ve come to expect us being miles ahead and get nervous when we’re merely yards. This is a failing on my part, no one else.

    2. Past performance. I reckon we’ve had one genuinely good window in the last five. I also believe that was due to an Antipodean gent who is no longer around

    3. Whether we like it or not, we have to be prepared early. Our season has started already. In prev years, we’ve had euro qualifiers around this time and can expect same in the future. Last season, we were dumped out the league cup at the first hurdle. In my opinion, due to being ill prepared at seasons start. Euro deadline is probably a better gauge for those teams still playing friendlies this week. In scotland, we’re already under way.

  13. Quadrophenian

“An omission from both the teeth gnashing and chill out lists is the fact that Brendan has stated and repeated in several pressers that proven quality needs to be added. But mibby Brendan’s just getting angsty anaw.”

    ———————————

As you state, Brendan’s statements can fit within both groups.

Is he “frustrated” by the failure to add “quality” thus far?

Or is he chilled that the players we are after are “quality” but are not freed up yet.

To me, he looks chilled but, as you know, I distrust, any readings of body language by the untrained, almost as much as I distrust people who interpret Brendan’s words to make them mean what they want to hear from him, even though the words he used did not actually convey that message via their conventional dictionary definitions.

But, maybe that’s me, and Brendan is actually ragin’ as much as your average Copland Road attendee.

  14. saint stivs

If the original statement was so clear

the Board would not have felt compelled to release a follow up statement today.

A statement which still begs the question….

Why did you issue yesterday’s statement?

  15. Why did you issue yesterday’s statement?

because the auditors told them and the legal aspect has to be met.

all shareholders should have equally knowledge to make decisions before the accounts are published.

  16. Glenowen

    Considered response.

The transfer window with its heavy loading of last minute deals is yet another factor that militates against clubs from the smaller leagues and those are the clubs likely to be involved with Euro qualification ties. The Scandinavian countries have a different transfer window reflecting their needs for a longer winter window and a shorter summer one as they can’t play as long in winter months but I can’t see that being a solution for us. If we want to buy unwanted or overlooked players from bigger teams and leagues i.e. where the quality is, then we are stuck with UEFA’s dates.

The one successful window you cite was largely due to Ange’s knowledge of Japanese players (3 great successes, one slow burner (Iwata) and 2 who did not make it (Ideguchi and Kobayashi) but the real success was getting Jota and CCV on loan on the final day of the transfer window. Those 2 are what made it the success it was. We got Jota, and Polo Bernardo, because Benfica thought they had better options for the first 11 but knew he was worth money and we made great money on him after 2 years with us and we got CCV because Spurs fans had declared him a dud and had him moved to right back. Incidentally, lots of USA fans still think Cameron is a dud because he plays in a Diddy league and an error he made in his last outing. More fools them.

But Ange’s success with Japanese signings has long opened a lot of eyes to the Far East market and we don’t have an easy inside track anymore. North African and Middle East talent is being harvested by the French and others. For me the lazy market to exploit is the academies of the big leagues, promising impatient youngsters whose clubs do not offer them many tastes of first team action. We have exploited this in the past with Edouard, Frimpong, Denayer and others. Even if this means using the loan system without a set fee to buy, we have seen that EPL clubs don’t often place a high value on a youngster who proves to be a success in the SPFL, and we can still buy at a decent price as the Bog League club will have bought 2 established internationals in his position during the time he was on loan.

The harder task is sourcing the older experienced defender, repeating the CCV trick. I read this morning that Brentford had offered £7m for O’Shea from Burnley and were turned down. How much higher would we have to go and what wages could we offer that are competitive with Brentford?

    Celtic plc

    (“Celtic” or the “Club”)

Trading update for the year ended 30 June 2024

Celtic has enjoyed a strong on pitch performance in the 2023/24 football season having won the domestic double. In addition, it has enjoyed a successful year in generating gains from player trading. As a result of such gains and a strong end to the season from a footballing perspective, Celtic now expects earnings for the year ended 30 June 2024 will be significantly higher than previous expectations, which were formed before the conclusion of the season and prior to certain player disposals.

Player registration valuations and player trading can and often do materially influence Celtic’s financial performance in addition to trading revenue.

The Summer transfer window is underway and following the closure of the window and the finalisation of the year end balance sheet review, the Club will then be in a position to confirm the extent of its earnings by publishing its results for the year ended 30 June 2024, in line with its usual timetable in mid-September 2024.

If I may follow up on An T’s response … I agree this is not accurate.

For me R2ngers losses are more relevant than their overall debt.

Most of their debt is to shareholders … the option remains (and it is a compliant option) to convert debt to equity.

They’ve done this repeatedly since they came into existence

… hence the ~490 million shares and speculative share price around 5p.

    As for Sevco financial results?

Difficult to predict due to opaqueness (which I think is intentional)

Bams on either side will predict either imminent liquidation or nothing to worry about depending on their sentiment.

Informed conjecture based on the few facts available is possible … but there will still be holes.

The Club should be looking for extra security, around the stadium, and Club shops, when the Statue Loyal, take to the streets,we all know what this is disguised as.

  23. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    What we do know?

The most recent R2ngers accounts (they’re old) were for a period during which they

    – participated in the Champions League

    – cashed in big time on Bassey and Aribo.

    Result : £4m loss.

For financial period during to be reported next (God knows when by the way) they

    – bought two handfuls of new signings

    – binned Beale and co

    – didn’t get CL revenue

    – sold one player, Kanara for any real dough

On that basis alone I expect the figure for this period to be worse than the previous period

    (No S*** Sherlock ! )

    Then onto the current year?

    – usual plethora of signings, albeit some cost offset by letting contracts run out and sale of Goldson

    – Elite case settlement

    – No preseason friendly revenue

    – Ibrox not … er .. Aye Ready

CL qualification or not will be the difference between just a poor financial outcome and a disastrous one.

  24. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

Add to all of the above ….

The cat isn’t necessarily out of the bag with respect to the physical condition and long term viability of Ibrox … but the cat’s head is certainly sticking out.

This announcement doesn’t affect the transfer business in any event as any transfers will only affect the 30 June 2025 figures.

  27. so back to Sunday.

I was up very early for a change, so able to wander about some, say hello to a few and met an old friend , who was at the match for the first time in 6 years and had his two dumbarton born but hungarian sons with him.

He was elated to be there, sometimes I think people who can attend forget what it means to the broader population who cant.

At the old railway walkway I encounter an african man with his 3 young sons, two with backpaks on doing the lifting if you like and a wee yin who can be barely 5 or so.

They are wearing modest cheap clothes, maybe 2nd hand, no adidas kits or trainers, but seem happy.

I asked the fella if he needed any help, he looked a bit lost.

He told me he is fine, never been to celtic park before.

I said if you are looking for your seats i can take you to the turnstyles.

He said, its fine, again, but he did seem nervous of me just talking. maybe thinks i will try sell him something.

He then says, i just wanted to see celtic park, a long standing dream to see it, and to show the kids what it is like on matchday. to be fair, they were less enthusiast than their Celtic da.

So, I took him to the front stand, to see the statues, the walkway, some paving that means something to us, The CQN star, the story of the teaching broether and founder, Jinky, Jock, then down to see Billy.

He took several pictures, and what struck me was the general positivity of Celtic supporters who got in the road , apoligiesed then said something nice.

Smart west african he loosened up a bit and started asking questions, had never seen a crowd like this other than Accra on market day, he told the kids 40,000 people here can you imagine that.

I told him, there will acutally be 58,500 (not 60,000 that is lazy reporting hahahhaha)

He took some facts with himself, going away to research Walfrid, billy played 790 times incredible and Jinky on the totem pole, he liked all of that.

    Now the rub,

i asked him why scotland, why celtic.

He is not a refugee, but he is an ecomonic migrant.

A teacher at home in Ghana,, but a carer in scotland, and having to sit new exams to teach here.

He cannot afford to take the kids to see celtic, that would be more than all their school shoes (irony right there), but as a special treat they came down FROM DUNDEE on the megabus, walked to celtic park, and had a return seat at 6:10.

I told him about kano foundation, the lochee csc, and maybe he could get the kids to celtic park via that route.

I saw only 1 ticket held up at the billy statue, and i now wish i had bought the kids something as a souvenier.

Its these things that make me mad about empty seats.

Inside at 117, looking to the segregation for killie, we did well with the gerrymandering, but there was still a clutch of empty seats up in our corner, so unless a bus didnt turn up then seats did not get sold.

    Any ways, why celtic …………….

he said, did you ever see henrik larsson ? that is why i am a celtic supporter.

i hope i see him some other time in life but i doubt it.

The chap from Celticway is 100% correct.

Also here is some detail on FRS102 that relates to post-balance sheet events.

  30. Our board really hate transfer windows. They cant wait till it’s over. Let’s be honest – they have absolutely zero european ambitions. They just dont care – but they are happy to increase prices on euro matches and sell on the merch.

We are a recruitment mess. We got lucky bcoz Ange, manager turned recruiter, signed maeda, kyogo, hatate. Rodgers, manager turned recruiter, signed schmichael. Oreily , ccv, 4 other CB, etc. were all gamble signings. For every one that worked out – 5 failed.

Whats the profile for a left back in an attack minded side? Athleticism, speed, defensive ability and attack as support. We sign wee guys – too many wee guys. Profile for CB is tackle and heading – none of the CB on the books would be described as areal dominant.

We are chancers – got away with it because if ange and rodgers and a poorly managed rangers.

Dont expect any ready made pros to be signed with europe ambition in mind – unless its an opportunistic loan deal last minute. ,

  31. Stebhoy

I’ll donate £20 to a charity of your choice if we don’t sign at least 2 first team players between now and the close of the transfer window if you will do the same if we do.

  32. !!Bada Bing!! on

Gene- I think we will get 3 or 4 in,but the manager quite rightly said he wanted them in early, remember he’s still waiting for the 4 he wanted in the January Window……

  33. Paul67

I agree that Schmeichel’s distribution is excellent. A keeper who simply moves the ball side to side to split centre halves is easy to press. A keeper that can ping it out a wide fullback is an improvement, but if he has the confidence and the ability to also play a 40 yard straight ball into the centre of midfield, then as you say it opens the game right up by eliminating the initial press and should leave us with a numerical advantage unless the opposition is going man for man (and thus dragging out a centre half wildly out of position and wide open to a ball over the top to pacey forwards). It would appear on this short sample size to be an excellent signing by Rodgers.

Perhaps you can have a word with this guy in the angry blogger business

    who was

“alarmed that our recruitment strategy has pivoted so sharply from that of any forward looking football club”

when he signed. Perhaps signing experienced quality players that have no sell on value can greatly enhance a squad and bring in revenue in other ways by helping to win trophies and compete in European football. And therefore perhaps buying cheap raffle tickets from far flung corners of the globe isn’t the most forward looking strategy after all.
