Schmeichel’s distribution

181

Kasper Schmeichel had very little to do against Kilmarnock on Sunday, however, the most notable aspect of his play was his distribution.  On four occasions he swept an early ball to a Celtic player around the halfway line.

This ability is the new normal at elite level in England and is why outstanding keepers, like Fraser Forster, never made the step up, and why Joe Hart lost his spot at Manchester City.  A keeper being able to find a teammate with a 40-yard pass curtails an opponent’s ability to press our defence, which creates space for everyone during the build-up period.

Teams will react to Schmeichel and it will be interesting to see how this plays out on smaller pitches.  I expect we will see the central defenders and Callum McGregor get more space.

AT – bravo, you’ve posted the remuneration of the Celtic “Board”.

How many of them have a say in transfer activity or are you merely highlighting they are well, paid?

  2. Wow, this absolutely sucks now. This used to be a good place to come to debate what was going on at Celtic but not now. You can’t put a post up without people insulting you. Seriously, give it up, this place is poisonous.

  3. Watching a Tiking Toking post about someones match day experience on Sunday. From early bevy, travel , tifo , goals then walking back in the rain.

But the highlight was seeing a woman leaving the ground with a little white dog with a green coat. Looked like the main stand / Jock Stein .

I realise that anything is pawsible but I have never seen a Fido watching or leaving a game. Didn’t know it was allowed.

Could this be an emotional support or therapy hound ? Truly baffled with this one.

  4. Not so long ago we used to laugh (oh how we laughed) at the Dead Ringers Board issuing statement after statement from Ayebrokes. Statement O Clock some said…..

And now? Our Board has issued statements in consecutive days.

One to reassure the Stock Exchange and keep the share price flying high

And two to reassure the faithful that statement one was bona fide.

    Honest Guv

I would tend to agree with you on that %, the 10% normally come like buses, a wee burst then sanity prevails 😵‍💫

  7. Is it unusual to play 2 games in a row on a sunday at the beginning of the season especially when we don’t have mid week euro games?

  8. Jackiemac,

Last week was because our opponents were playing Thursday in Europe. This week, its Sky.As usual.

  9. If any truth in the story,Brighton have bid £25 million + add one,it will be hard to say no.They have a 19 year old genius,Buenonotte, who would be a sensation in our league,we have had an interest in.Should be a deal to be done there.

    Might be a big if.

  10. …must have been before he knew he wasn’t getting the VAR gig, which he’s been touting himself for, fully supported by Radio Scotland….

  12. Don’t remember this from school :

Why does one person in volleyball where a different color?

That person is a defensive specialist known as a “libero.” They’re only allowed to play in the back row of the volleyball court and can’t serve, spike the ball over the net or move into a front-row position. The different color jersey helps referees easily spot them to enforce the unique rules of that position.

  13. The transfer market that Celtic is working in will not come alive until the end of August – that’s why O’Riley is still here and Idah isn’t.

The club is being encouraged, understandably by some, to enter the £7/8m+ transfer fee zone. The wages demanded by players/agents in this segment of the market are potentially unaffordable for Celtic. It’s all very well quoting past (£6m)signings like Sutton, Hartson and Lennon, but wages, in relative terms, were not as inflated as they are now – even the (£9m)Eduard era(2018) has been gazumped. Surely it would be folly to drive a coach and horses through the current wage structure at the club for a few incomers and risk the alienating the majority of a current squad who has delivered success. On the other hand, leveling-up and hiking the overall wage bill would be ‘Ibroxesque’, unaffordable and ultimately self-defeating. We didn’t follow lemming-like during the Murray era and we certainly won’t do it now even with the EPL elephant in the room.

Some Celtic fans actually believe quality players are being ignored by our management and ‘biscuit-tin board’, when the reality is that our league is not of a high standard and it takes ‘something else’, i.e. protracted negotiation, to persuade them to come to Scotland to progress their careers. I’m hopeful of three, or, four affordable recruits incoming and at least the same number outgoing in the next couple of weeks.

The 6th August statement, as we know, on ‘better than expected results for ‘23/’24, was not boasting, but a requirement by the stock exchange and is good news for all the Celtic family. There will of course be a significant legal bill to be settled during this accounting period which we don’t know the extent of; but what we do know is that we will be in a position to discharge it quickly, honourably and straightforwardly without it adversely affecting, or, deflecting the core business and aims of the club.

The current board at Celtic is comprised of people who are guardians of the club – i.e. they have the legal right and responsibility to take care of its well-being and continued existence. During this century they have carried out that undertaking to the letter and with unparalleled success. Some accuse these ‘Celtic people’ of lack of ambition on the European front, that’s a matter of opinion, but there can be no such criticism of the ability to fulfill their primary duty. Celtic is in good hands, thank God.

The grass at Celtic Park is always green enough for me. HH

Just a wee mention of Willie Collum who has oft been villified on these pages. Isn’t he now doing what we have always wanted in bringing someone from outwith the Scottish refereeing bubble to be the new VAR manager? It hasn’t taken him long and I applaud him for it – well done Willie!!

    Excellent post.

Darwin – I’d add to your point that…

“The current board at Celtic is comprised of people who are guardians of the club.”

    With the following…

Even if being a guardian doesn’t always align with the desires that many fans hold for the team’s footballing ambitions, achievements and status within the world game.

    Kudos on your sage post!
