Scope to rest players between European dates

124

Under normal conditions, starting the season at home to Hamilton Accies would be welcome as a soft introduction, but anything out of the ordinary is a leveller.  We have yet to play a football game and no friendlies are arranged, a situation that will need to change quickly.

Neither team will be fully fit for that fixture on 2 August, a situation that favours Hamilton significantly more than Celtic.

The European qualifiers are sandwiched between fixtures against Aberdeen, Dundee United, Motherwell, Ross County, Livingston and Hibs.  Crucially, we are at home ahead of both play-off round legs .  There should be scope in these fixtures for Neil Lennon to rest players during this period, without harming our 10-in-a-row quest too much.

  1. Good evening CQN from a lovely summers evening in the Garngad

Big Jmmy – I will look at bagging us a table for Friday the 17th at The Howgait (formerly The Lee) they are not taking bookings for beer garden tables according to the website, I was speaking to a couple of the young team who are still furloghed and they were down earlier and they had to stand and wait outside.

I will call the pub mañana and text you. If that’s ok?

    D. :)

  2. if you can tonight Celts take a time out and have a thought of the 167 people who lost their lives on this day in 1988..

    God bless them.

  3. Now we know our route in the Premiership, a quick look at our route to the Champions League group stage …

    Q Round 1

Celtic are the top seeded of the 34 teams – the H/A draw shouldn’t matter in the 17 ties , hopefully geographically drawn with travelling in mind .

    Q Round 2

2 teams could enter Q2 with higher coefficients , Basel (Swi) and last season’s nemesis Copenhagen (Den) who are currently trailing leaders Midtjylland by 14 points with just 5 games to play – and they play each other on Thursday, a point enough for Schiavchenko’s team to join us in R2.

Basel are lying 3rd, 6 points behind Young Boys and 8 points behind leaders St Gallen, with 8 games to play. Would take quite a run of results for Basel to overtake both teams above them.

So Copenhagen almost certainly won’t qualify and Basel will struggle, both failing to qualify leaving Celtic as top seeded side in QR2 20 teams.

    Q Round 3

We would be joined by Olympiakos with a better coefficient so would be 2nd top seeded team in round 3’s 12 teams

    Play Offs

Reaching the Play Offs would see Ajax (Ned) and Salzburg (Aut) joining, pushing us down to 4th top seeds in the 8 teams, assuming Olympiakos and us progress.

Then we must hope that both Copenhagen and Basel have failed to qualify to avoid us dropping out of the top seeds and so possibly drawing one of the 3 seeded teams above us in the 4 play off ties.

    Simples !

  4. Looking at the squad on Official site it struck me as being a bit bare,

27 names listed but these include Forster, Bauer & Arzani, so in reality 24.

Of these 6, Soro, Shved, Henderson, Luca Connell, Bayo & Klimala are not established players, so right now we are dependent on Bain & 17 blooded outfield players,

These 17 include, Bolingoli on whom the jury is definitely out and both Mikey Johnston & Frimpong.

I have great hopes for all 3 but even Frimpong can’t be rated a Banker.

He had a great season last year but we have seen one season wonders before,

He needs to kick on now like Tierney did.

In my humble opinion, we need a top class Keeper & at least 3 or4 battle hardened pros.

    No projects or squad players,

I have checked the UEFA site looking for confirmation that seeded teams (top half) will get home field advantage in the first 3 qualifying rounds. Cannot find any information. Is that correct or is it an open draw?

The 3 qualifying rounds are one game with the Home advantage drawn at each round. Possibly we could be drawn away each round – or equally at home ??? The Play Off round will be 2 legs with leg order drawn as usual.

I hope that UEFA use common sense by geographically grouping teams not only in the first round (as usual) but later also to prevent excess travelling with all the Covid issues. Might make the ties a bit easier for us.

  10. Big Wavy

Moravcik and I both use Bert Kassies as the Bible – I’ve been following his site for many years

  11. Wish celtic would go out and get a gk and left sided centreback in. Ok saying transfer window not open but deals can get done and our season starts in 4 weeks time.

Quick to ask for the season ticket money now is Celtic’s time to step the fuck up and get our team ready for new season.

We are miles behind sevco on the pre-season title.

Hello again all you young rebels.

The Piper Alpha tragedy is always a very sad date in our lives.

My wee princess lost her mother the same night to a heart attack

as we were holidaying down at Silloth caravan park.

Driving up the road after a police visit at the camp to inform us

the news from the Piper my former workplace was horrific.

Lost a lot of good mates and Celtic fans on that day.

Sadly having experienced the place it was only a matter of time.

    Shame on those Corporate basturts.

And good morning to you David 66.

Melbourne now moving back into stage 3 lockdown after almost 200

second wave infections, terrible reality check to all those selfish people

who don’t want to listen to the health experts.

Another six weeks of hibernation, school holidays at the moment have

    been extended.

So from no new cases returning people from abroad who were supposed

to be in hotel isolation have selfishly started another lockdown.

And just when our CSC committee had organised a big Celtic celebrate the

    9 meet up and luncheon.

    Are you lurking PADDYMAC?

We need European football. Without the revenue it brings we will downsize.
