Scot Gov wants to talk about Celtic, not the deaths

427

If you want to criticise Celtic for taking a January holiday while the country suffers and you have been stuck at home for 10 months, go for it, there’s acres of space below.  The football bubble is difficult to reconcile when people are currently falling ill and dying in such numbers, the optics are poor; Celtic, really?

But if you are responsible for setting the rules of the football bubble, like the Scottish Government are, you are responsible for what is permitted within that bubble.

If you gave specific permission for Celtic’s trip to Dubai, like the Scottish Government did, you and you alone have no right to issue PR statements of condemnation.

This contrasts with the Scottish Government’s congratulatory comments for Newco after punishing their players who broke bubble rules, a marked contrast to their reaction after Celtic punished Boli Bolingoli.

I get that this Government is a world leader at PR, that their leader appears to spend much of her day preparing and delivering her message of PR brilliance and that they effortlessly dig into Celtic without self-awareness.

And I know this is a lot easier than their day job, like deciding whether to send infected patients to care homes or not, running an education system, controlling a police force who witness sectarian crime without concern, and ensuring NHS hospitals do not have to issue statements of regret after poor cleaning-related deaths.

All this magnificent PR keeps eyes away from how that day job is being performed.  Scotland has a death rate higher than all but six countries in the world, including countries run by incompetent fools, like the rest of the UK – who we continue to shadow for inexplicable reasons – and the US.

Your government wants people to talk about Celtic, not look at the death count.  The former is embarrassing and the latter is worse only in Peru, Belgium, Italy and three former Yugoslav countries.  I am not part of this cult.

One of the only good things about Covid – watching/listening to the wildlife – birds (even herons and owls), mice, squirrels and dear

tho sad to see 2 newly killed young dear on the M80 yest morning ;-(

    ………………………

I always think it’s a tragedy when you see a dead deer on the roads. They’re beautiful creatures. I travel to Edinburgh a lot (not during lockdown) to see my daughter and grandson. I’ve been doing it for a number of years and am shocked at times to see the roadkill on the M8, M80 and M9.

Here’s hoping we might get a chance to see and hear more wildlife now that we’re in lockdown again just like we did last year when it first happened.

  8. Paul67 (and all others fond of rhetorical fallacy insults like ‘forelock tugger’)…

Firstly, a disclaimer. I’m an SSP (and sometime Communist Party depending on who’s running) voter. Not an SNP voter, party member, forelock tugger, Uncle Tom… whatever. With that out of the way.

Now that’s done with: life expectancy has been falling for around 60 years in Scotland. And under successive Labour/Tory administrations income inequality has increased. So if we’re going to mention the morbidity rate of Covid, lets do so in an informed way – and not in a Trump-esque, quasi swivel eyed paranoid rant about the SNP. Let’s look at the actual historic reasons why covid is hitting hard in Scotland. Of course you won’t – because the only thing that seems as important as shilling for the Celtic Board is shilling for the Labour Party.

I’ve lost a close friend to covid, and this politicking and naked disinformation is disgusting.

My other point – if you can’t see why Celtic jetting off to Dubai is a bad look for the club, I’m astounded. The new variant Covid that has caused (for the most part) the current lockdown wasn’t around when permission was given for Celtic’s trip. More to the point, if ever something illustrated the gulf between the haves and have nots it’s Celtic jetting off to the sun for some R&R whilst people’s lives are falling apart back home. The serfs get lockdown whilst the leagues “vice leaders” (to reused Celtic’s phrase) are off being richly rewarded for consistent and serial failure.

As in most great battles, once again we hear “Ownward!”…. from the leaders at the back, a safe distance from the action. Honestly Paul, in the litany of cynical articles you’ve produced (especially recently, but it’s been a project), this one is the giddy limit. You’d actually see Celtic reduced to pariah status just to protect the power brokers.

  9. On the wildlife status although I have no empirical evidence I feel that there are many more birds of prey around. It seems I see them every day even in Glasgow, in particular there is one perched on a security camera at J1 of the M77 every day.

  15. The Battered Bunnet on

You should read this article. It’s an account of a shift in a High Dependency Unit in a hospital in (presumably) the London area this week. Given the trend in Covid-19 data in the past week, next week gets even worse.

There is a contractual prohibition on NHS staff in England speaking to the media. The effect of this is that the public doesn’t understand how precipitous the crisis now is. We go about our day to day lives grumbling at restrictions and oblivious to the reality of this public health and human disaster.

In Scotland, we have yet to see the wort of it. We have record breaking infection prevalence, capacity-reaching hospital admissions, but are as yet about two weeks behind London and the south east. It remains to be seen whether the earlier, more restrictive measures applied here will limit the catastrophe.

On 16th December, the Dumfries and Galloway NHS area recorded infection prevalence of 19 new cases per 100,000 population in the preceding week. It was the lowest figure of any mainland area in the UK.

Yesterday, just two and a half weeks later, it recorded a rate of 562. When Glasgow and Lanarkshire reached 400 in early November, the capacity of the NHS was breached. D&G along with Borders already exceeds this level, with Glasgow and Lanarkshire currently at 360 and growing fast. Scotland as a whole is at 293 (measured by new cases reported daily as of yesterday).

This article describes the current situation on one ward in one London hospital, which, barring some unlikely series of events, we can expect to repeat here in the coming weeks. Those who read my posts will recall me referring previously to London in January as likely to be akin to something between March in Bergamo and winter in Hell. The article describes March in Bergamo.

  19. Celtic will have paid upfront for the week in Dubai – no reason to cancel that would get a refund as it’s currently not a proscribed destination. Should we have gone or even arranged the trip back in November – no.

So no-one thinks it’s a conspiracy to withhold the vaccine from the other nations in the UK – here in Biddulph there’s a rumour we may see the first injections next week.

My 85 year old mother in law had a text message just before Christmas asking if she wanted the vaccine – she replied yes – since then nothing.

Depends on the species and what period you’re looking at (shifting baseline syndrome). Some species are increasing, some decreasing and others somewhere in between. What’s true across the board though is that there are far fewer birds of prey than there should be.

Would you blame Capitalism for the spread of Covid-2019 in the western world ? It would be interesting to find out how Covid-2019 has spread in Communist nations ?

That’s a good question – and one I’m sadly ill educated to give an answer on. What I *can* comment on though is the willingness of capitalism to sacrifice people in the pursuit of the ‘economy’. The idea that a government has an idea of an allowable number of losses is astounding to me.

I think beyond that, in the UK especially, the impact of covid in two areas highlight’s the abject failure of the free market economy. The way the NHS has suffered – for example, with the denial of care to cancer patients and others highlights the national disgrace that has been the underfunding of the NHS to the point its unable to actually provide the care it was meant to. Further to that, the way Covid has impacted poor or ‘economically challenged’ areas points to society and economy that’s in systemic failure (or if you’re a capitalist, working perfectly). Things have to change, and they have to change on a major scale.

Beyond the ‘capitalist’/’socialist’ debate though, we need to reframe how we view economies – the notion that China is communist is absurd – China is in the grip of a despotic regime, but economically it’s not really adhering to anything I could describe as communist. I’m a great believer in anarchist socialism – of the type espoused by the great Noam Chomsky and Richard Wolf (economically) so I’m suspicious of anything relating to current governments. To entirely quote Atari Teenage Riot (because I’m shallow like that)- All governments are murderers.

James Forrest prev: The moon temperature is irrelevant. Dropping £300000 pa is not.Wether that was relevant you dismissed as ‘even if it’s true. It is true. My reasons for wanting NFL to be dismissed, in fact not hired, have nothing to do with how much or how little he has earned or is earning. He should be ‘let go’ because he brings no useful attributes to Celtic as a coach or manager. Previous standards, like monies earned or trophies won, are badges of honour. No more no less.

Personal. attacks such as ‘even if it’s true’ are unnecessary especially if there is no if about it.

Sorry – you’re correct. I was going on Glasgow figures, in the main because it’s where Labour have loomed large in Scottish society. And the life expectancy figures from the ONS bear that figure out. Suicide rates have also been rising since 1968. Although, again, to be precise it’s actually 58 years, not 60.

The challenge I’m making to Paul’s article is the notion that Covid has no historical driver and is a result of the SNP is highly disingenuous and plain wrong.

Covid hits poverty exponentially hard, and poverty is not an invention of the SNP. Do you disagree with that?
