Scotland, consolable in defeat

473

I want Scotland to win at pretty much anything.  For me (fourth generation), this is my home and my country.  I also want Celtic players to be successful.  But the engagement with tonight’s qualifier against Serbia is not there.  If I’m really honest, my biggest wish is for Callum McGregor to have a midweek off.

Memories of the 1998 World Cup do not help.  Celtic contributed more players to that tournament than any other club in world football.  We paid a price the following season as exhaustion took its toll.  Do I really want Celtic players on international duty in throughout the summer, before another tortuous European qualification campaign?  Do you?  No need to pull that plaster off yet.

My country’s position on the international stage has always been viewed through pragmatism.  Will it hurt the poor, or the soon-to-be-poor (hmmm)?  Will it hurt what I really care about, like Celtic?

So good luck to them tonight, but if we are beaten by the better team, I will be consolable.

  1. I see Griff responds to big Suttys fitness criticism by sprinting 55 yards ahead of team mates to get to hug big Marsh first … apologies if already covered … worth noting

Good for you. I couldn’t get an apprenticeship at Arnold Clark’s but ma two dumb hun neighbours did.

I got told to hide ma crucifix when I worked behind the Briggs bar in Bishopbriggs.

I decided to fight the system here and by the time I took early retirement in 2018, I was in charge of an Ork/ mini Ork filled engineering team for a large Yankee medical firm. I took great pleasure doing their appraisals each year. No point beating myself up when I knew I had Karma as a friend. If you do, you’ll end up hating everyone and everything

    Great result tonight.

What i would say is that of those Celtic fans I know who do actively support Scotland the majority would not be of Irish Catholic heritage

What percentage of Celtic fans living in Scotland would you consider do not derive from an Irish lineage?

    ================

In my individual case 100% :)

I was born 151 Gallowgate, my dad 4 Well St and his dad 331 Gallowgate, Calton. The Irish connection is on my granddad’s wife’s side (who died 4 months before I was born) and her dad was either born in 1836 in Ireland or appeared on a Irish census of that date.

Given my first love I don’t think anything else should get in the way.

Scotland had a lot of good players back then, north and south of the border, but, without checking back, would have thought Kenny got capped for Scotland before that.

    Then again

  12. AN TEARMANN on 12TH NOVEMBER 2020 11:08 PM

Was at the 2-1 game in 1973 too.

In fact, I took my parents to it – neither were interested in football. My Dad couldn;t lay & was more of a meccano set boy. My Mum had a soft sot for Celtic but aspired to be posh so much that I was never allowed a jersey or a scarf or allowed to go to Celtic Park, until my uncle took me. He was trusted only because he was a priest – as we know priests were always trusted in those days.

They were both shocked when after Jordan scored I joined in with some new friends & helped them drink their champagne – by the neck. My Mum’s face when I turned round with champers scooshing out my nose was a mixture of horror & weird fascination. Was this yob actually her son?

It was the only game I went to with either of them. I got married the next year & within 4 years they were both gone. Such a nice memory to have even though my Mum almost disowned me on the night.

I have to say too, Bunnahabhain is my first choice single malt. Only ever had the 12 year old but I notice the 40 year old is just a modest $2138.09 cents for a 70cl bottle over here.

Just checked & the 12 year old costs $44.77 for a 70cl – but wait for it – the delivery charge is $60.52 & tax & customs is $11.19. Grand total is staggering $116.48 from a lace called the Whisky Exchange.

I shall stick with my generic highland malt at $27.00

I’ve never met a football fan who supported the SFA.

That both the SFA and the referees share or shared the same space is an affront.

But as we both know the problem goes right across the board at every level in Scottish Football.

Quite a bit of money involved these days, a lot of which seems to be going to those with substantial incomes.

And not just MPs. Opportunities denied to both younger men and women.

  15. Saw some comments about David Marshall’s foot being off the line.

I’ve just spent 5 minutes trying to get it at the point where the ball is kicked.

Best I could do was a microsecond before contact & his right foot was still on the line then although he was in the process of shifting hos weight onto his left foot.

I noticed that both the lino & the ref appeared to be looking at the kicker at that point but maybe the lino was doing the old swivel eye dodge so he could do the impossible – watch two places at different angles at the same time.

I couldn’t have said his foot was raised at the point of contact by the Serb.

    All epidemic now anyway Rodders.

32 pounds is close enough to the price online at that place.

I’ve found another place who’ll deliver for $68.00 – spirits are only sold in ABC stores in North Carolina.

Alcohol Beverage Control means they’re state run – allegedly to control alkies & such, but really just a monopoly for the State government.

When I travel I tend to detour via outlets in other states to find a bargain.

I am sure that performance and qualification can only help Ryan this season as i hope it will all Celtic players.

i would give Ryan a break,i know he was reared in inverness area and maybe his part in his country qualifying for its first big tournament in 22 years was all to much for him.i dont even know if he is a Celtic fan,his dad was on our books at one time.

When ball is kicked one foot must be on or behind the line or in the air in line with the goal line.

  21. Brilliant result for Scotland tonight. Great to see the Celtic bhoys and ex-bhoys all playing well. It means a huge amount to these players to get Scotland to a major tournament. Steve Clark has done an amazing job with the group. He has turned them into a well organized team who have belief in each other on the park and in the whole organization involved. I think most of us now have a Summer tournament to look forward to.

  24. Hello again all you young rebels.

    David 66

Reply from yesterdays question regarding our local soccer club.

Yes, we are up and running again, trying to give the local community

some value for the money they paid to register their kids with us.

Still can’t use our dressing rooms, office areas, canteen etc, because

the health people still using our amenities for testing.

So no equipment yet, but we’ve always got the aul jaikets as goalposts

just like the days of yore lol.

Over 30 degs at 7 o’clock the other night and it’s not even summer yet.

I had the mini roos u7’s at 5.30 till 6.30 and it’s like trying to get wild

cats into a circle, they just charge about, and pitch parameters mean

nothing, and me blowing madly on my whistle trying in vain to get them

back on the park, but I luv it.

    Then it’s the u17’s, 7 o clock till 8 30, a different scenario, they know it

all, so then the gruff, grumpy, Glesga ghuy comes to the fore.

Next season will be tough if we even get going, a load of our African

boys fees are subsidised by the local St Francis of Assisi and because of Covid

don’t know if that will happen, our club is skint as are most in the federation.

    So it’s wait and see.

14 days now without any new infections, still using masks, but hopefully next

week they will go, our 25 kms travel restriction has been lifted so it’s down to

meet up with Paddymac and our Peninsula CSC Bhoys/ girls this weekend, I’m

as exited as those young mini roos I was chasing about last night lol.

The child within never leaves you, Celtic tops are out ready to be worn with

pride, and rebel town Mornington will be jumping.

Well done Scotland and especially our Celtic bhoys.

  25. Good morning CQN from a dark and cauld Garngad

MM – brilliant update on your club, I hope you get much needed funds in. In contrast I took my 8 year old grandson to training last Tuesday in Glasgow and it was dark, very windy and pishing from the heavens. Pulls up to the pitches thinking the wee man wont fancy this, but nope car stops and wee man has the door open as he is shouting see you granda remember its 8.15 pick up. We are not allowed to stay because of covid, so went back about 7.30 and they were doing pens. The wee man hitting them with both feet top corner etc…a bit of pride came over me, all those sessions in my garden might be paying off.😂

    Well done Scotland.

    D :)

  26. Morning David, our young kids make our chests swell with

pride, you always think, they’re taking nothing in, and suddenly

it all comes to fruition and they are showing other kids how to

    do it lol.

    It’s so gratifying.

As regards the weather, think I prefer the cooler nights like Glesgy

training, couldn’t peel my top off last night it was that sweaty, on

the upside the ice cold beer later was heaven 8-))

    H.H. Mick

  27. CalMac. Some say he can’t tackle. He made one last night. Oh, and 12 interceptions during the ninety minutes.

  28. DAVID66…Your Post from yesterday ( I think ? )…

I am okay, but I was a wee bit unwell earlier this week, and still feeling a bit ” Dodgy” LO ( Nothing Serious ). Ive been in contact with a Professional ” Cat Carer” yesterday via emails and phone, and she appears to be a lovely young Student who lives very near me as she lives in the Trongate. She is visiting Me and Rocky around Tea Time tonight, and she will not only Feed and tend to his Litter Tray etc, but She is also happy to give him his ” Meds”…Insulin Injections etc….IF I end up back in hospital at any time ?

Since Rocky became unwell some weeks ago, I have been VERY worried about how Rocky can be looked after etc…IF I ever ended up back in hospital…especially cos of him needing not only Fed etc…but those Insulin Jags, twice a Day ?

Hopefully, this young Lady will ease my concerns and look after my Bhoy. IF the need arises any time ?

My Mate who owns my Local Pub, would normally look after Rocky etc, but with the Pubs being closed its not Practical for him to feed the Bhoy etc, especially as my Mate lives outside of Glasgow, and obviously isnt in the Pub every day.

My mate the Pub owner phoned me on Sunday, to invite me to a wee get together in his Pub on Monday afternoon….with FREE Dinner being served to ALL ( Maybe around 30/40 Punters ?). the FREE Dinners were made and served up by a Restaurant owner on The Trongate…so it was ” Chicken and Chips” all round, and it gave some us the chance to catch up on the Gossip etc. sadly, there was One ” down side”….NO ALCOHOL to be served !

He obviously told me of this when he phoned, so when I entered his Pub most of the Punters/ Friends were drinking some Juices etc. I ordered a NON ALCOHOLIC Bottle of lager called ” Peroni”, at £2 a Bottle….i never thought I would see the day I would walk into his Pub and order NON Alcoholic Lager LOL !

I had 6 or 7 bottles and a good chat with him and others that I hadnt seen since October 9th, for a couple of hours and my FREE Dinner.

I firmly BELIEVE that it was those NON Alcoholic Lagers that made me slightly unwell since Monday…I really need the REAL stuff…Numerous Pints of BELHAVEN BEST…Feck that Non Alcoholic stuff LOL !

Stay safe mate, all the best to you and the family.

    HH.

  29. Morning all.

Congratulations, Scotland. Much to my surprise, I was caught up in the atmosphere last night. I was as nervous as I am watching Celtic. That doesn’t happen normally. Maybe because there were so many Celts and ex-Celts playing.
