Scotland’s fourth 6 in a row

294

Six league titles in-a-row was achieved for the fourth time in Scottish football yesterday as Celtic retained their championship, the third time the club reached this mark.

Jimmy Quinn, Celtic’s first superstar, powered the club to six-in-a-row between seasons 1904-05 and 1909-10, but that run ended there.

It would be 60 years before the feat would be repeated as the club’s greatest team made its final mark. This would be the final season of Lisbon Lions, Willie Wallace, John Clark, Bertie Auld, John Hughes and Stevie Chalmers. Ronnie Simpson had already retired. The Quality Street Gang picked up the mantle without skipping a beat. Although the club won their sixth successive league title, they failed to six League Cups in-a-row as Partick Thistle upset the odds in the final.

Celtic fans look back on this era as their nine-in-a-row, but in truth, those seasons were two eras. The first five years, ending at the European Cup Final in 1970, saw Celtic win five leagues, five League Cups, two Scottish Cups, the European Cup, as well as reaching that 1970 final in Milan. They regularly humbled top teams in this period.

The final four of the nine-in-a-row seasons saw Celtic eliminate (in total): Kokkola, Waterford, Copenhagen, Sliema Wanderers, Rosenborg, Turku, Vejle and Basel from European football, all of them from (then) semi-professional leagues. The team would run out of steam before 10-in-a-row.

Rangers got in on the act, winning their sixth successive title in 1994. Like the Quality Street Gang they would go on to add another three titles, but reflective history will always point to the ousting of the old Celtic board in March of that year as the point at which the tide began to turn.

This Celtic team is very likely to go on and achieve the illusive 10. Instead of signs of regression, they are only getting stronger. The apparently impossible objective – winning League, League Cup and Scottish Cup, undefeated in all, is now a serious possibility

They have a manager and a core of players who are a the top of their game and enjoying the challenge at Celtic. This may be Scottish football’s fourth six-in-a-row, but the current Celtic are by far the strongest team to reach this mark.

Enjoy every minute of it, your support has made it possible.

Was at swinecastle that day we were 2-0 and 3-1 down, fantastic game with

    a late winner for Celtic.

No worries on replying, like Tontine my memories of Tynecastle are the crowds and crushing. I remember that it was extremely narrow going through the turnstiles and then practically hitting a wall and narrow passage until you got out on to the terracing. My luck must have been worse than yours cos I remember plenty of bother with deid Huns, though mainly outside the grounds.

Hampden in 1976 after the Dryburgh Cup win on penalties was a genuine riot, with guys tearing up the wee picket fences from the old prefabs, to ward off maurading huns!

Saw plenty of trouble in Dundee too, against both teams!

Those days were just a different world, with the drink and poor stadiums, though great fun for daft laddies following the buoys on the old football specials that BR ran!

My first game at Tynecastle too.

I went on The Govan Emerald that day. My older sister stayed in Govan at the time. I was only 13 I think the bus left from Glens bar, maybe some of you old Govanites will confirm.

The crushing to get in was awful, even worse we were 2 down before I got in. The Gorgie mob in the tenements had the Hearts flags and scarves out the Windows and were given it to us tight. All well that ends well 4.3 to us a and the flags and scarves had all disappeared by the time we left the stadium.

  5. VFR800 is now a Monster 821 on

It’s a harsh world. Mrs VFR works in Social Work; I want to collect her at 5 this afternoon – I call her when I’m close by and she waits at the gate.

This evening as I got there she was talking to a young lad of about 12 or 13. As I drew up, she put her bag in the car and told me she had to deal with something and took the boy back into the office.

20 minutes later she called and told me that he saw her ID badges as she was waiting and walked over to her and said “can you help me please”. “Of course” she said. He then burst into tears and said his mum couldn’t look after him or his wee brother and sister properly because she was really struggling. He’d walked up from an area about 1.5 miles away to see if he could find someone to help his family.

They are still in there just now arranging for some of the emergency team to go to his house and assess the situation to see what help the family needs. In the meantime they have made him a piece and given him a banana and a cup of tea as he is really hungry. I nipped round to get £20 out of the bank so they can get some food for the other kids.

The boy looked very clean and tidy, not the usual “waif and stray” usually depicted in these circumstances. I don’t know the events that led to this family’s situation, but what really hit home was that my 15 year-old grandson called me to ask if I could get him a Dominos pizza delivered.

It’s so sad that so many children, for so many and varying reasons, are still so vulnerable in our society.

I’m not ashamed to say I’m finding this hard to type on my phone because my eyes keep filling with tears. While I wait for my wife to finish I will say a wee prayer for the family.

n ye bevans, I was only allowed to go to that game as our parish priest at the time was taking me and some other parishioners to the game.

Willie Gibson scored a first half hat trick for them.

Ronnie Glavin got our winner with a few minutes to go and Joe Craig was unlucky with a curling shot a minute or so later, not to score our fifth.

That and our 5 1 win there eight years later are my joint favourite games at Tynecastle.

In saying that, I wish I was at the New Year game in 2006 , when we won after being 2 nil down.

Croppybhoy, I never started going to Ibrox for our games until the start of the 81/82 season when fan segregation was better. The bother was huns coming out the enclosure along Edmiston Drive and making a beeline for our support.

At the cup semi v Dundee in 1977 , there was a huge fight between our support and theirs in the North Enclosure. One Celtic fan lunged into the Dundee mob feet first . He passed us conked out on a stretcher about 5 minutes later.

  18. TONTINETIM, in the 50’s and 60’s there were many signs in public to ‘Beware Pickpockets’, particularly at sports grounds and busy shopping areas. Even ‘No Spitting’ upstairs on buses, and ‘Now Adjust You Dress Before Leaving’ ! in the men’s toilets.

  21. re Assault on Lustig,

Much has been said about the lack of Police and stewards yesterday in relation to the incidents against Mikael Lustig, however what about the Ref and his linesman ?

ANY Ref will tell you that ” The Players safety is Paramount”, and this applies to icy conditions, flares on the pitch etc.

Why did Clancy FAIL to stop the match, and consult with the Police to drag the culprits out there and then ?

is it in his match report, if not why not ?

His linesman was right next to the incidents and MUST have seen what was going on.

Ref Clancy SHOULD have stopped the game. and even taken the players off the pitch and allow the Police to nab those responsible. Lustig and that linesman could have identified them no problem imo. What part of the incidents did the Ref NOT see ?

The SFA SHOULD be stepping into this, given that Hearts haven;t even issued ANY sort of statement today.

i would like to see Celtic DEMAND an inquiry, but Celtic shouldn’t have to.

    Hail Hail.

“i would like to see Celtic DEMAND an enquiry ”

That made me laugh, though I agree, there are a fair few on here who ask why The Plc should get involved in anything that has to do with the club as its the SFA’s responsibility to ensure proper governance ha ha ha innit.
