Scotland’s fourth 6 in a row

294

Six league titles in-a-row was achieved for the fourth time in Scottish football yesterday as Celtic retained their championship, the third time the club reached this mark.

Jimmy Quinn, Celtic’s first superstar, powered the club to six-in-a-row between seasons 1904-05 and 1909-10, but that run ended there.

It would be 60 years before the feat would be repeated as the club’s greatest team made its final mark. This would be the final season of Lisbon Lions, Willie Wallace, John Clark, Bertie Auld, John Hughes and Stevie Chalmers. Ronnie Simpson had already retired. The Quality Street Gang picked up the mantle without skipping a beat. Although the club won their sixth successive league title, they failed to six League Cups in-a-row as Partick Thistle upset the odds in the final.

Celtic fans look back on this era as their nine-in-a-row, but in truth, those seasons were two eras. The first five years, ending at the European Cup Final in 1970, saw Celtic win five leagues, five League Cups, two Scottish Cups, the European Cup, as well as reaching that 1970 final in Milan. They regularly humbled top teams in this period.

The final four of the nine-in-a-row seasons saw Celtic eliminate (in total): Kokkola, Waterford, Copenhagen, Sliema Wanderers, Rosenborg, Turku, Vejle and Basel from European football, all of them from (then) semi-professional leagues. The team would run out of steam before 10-in-a-row.

Rangers got in on the act, winning their sixth successive title in 1994. Like the Quality Street Gang they would go on to add another three titles, but reflective history will always point to the ousting of the old Celtic board in March of that year as the point at which the tide began to turn.

This Celtic team is very likely to go on and achieve the illusive 10. Instead of signs of regression, they are only getting stronger. The apparently impossible objective – winning League, League Cup and Scottish Cup, undefeated in all, is now a serious possibility

They have a manager and a core of players who are a the top of their game and enjoying the challenge at Celtic. This may be Scottish football’s fourth six-in-a-row, but the current Celtic are by far the strongest team to reach this mark.

There has been a huge change in financial inequality in the last 40/50yr.

Wealth inequality has increased massively since 70s Thathcerism/ Reganomics policies of cutting taxation to the wealthiest whilst simultaneously raising taxes on the rest of the population, this trend continues to present day.

Checkout Thomas Picketty ‘ Capital ‘ very informative book .

Policies including deregulation of the financial system, unprecedented bonuses for CEOs/bankers,tax havens , tax payer bailouts and austerity + wage stagnation for the lower paid in society have had an enormous effect. But you think migration is the main issue re poverty/financial inequality ?

A reasonable assessment of wealth inequality is hard to find.

    Glasgow , Soweto , Caracas ?

It also usually depends on what side of the political fence you are on. And as such ,it becomes more of a political pitch than an opinion.

Eg. Your Guardian reference. We both know what to expect.

You mention Thatcher and Reagan for the same reason.

I now tend to look at the evidence of my own experience of life. Anecdotal evidence , I know but basic instincts for finding a road to the truth have stood me in good stead.

One tiny example. The extraordinary improvement in the living standards of our fellow Tims since `80 .

When I left Glasgow , a mortgage was the province of a tiny proportion of the Scottish population.

Perhaps the comparative figures are available ?

Now that may not be an empirical indicator of an improvement in living standards , but I feel it could be one of a number of reasonable indicators.

I happen to think it is.

Sustainable immigration is desirable , but welfare , medical services and housing should be provided first to those who have paid for them.

After that , be as charitable as you wish.

    What`s wrong with that ?

The book I mentioned is based on 15yrs of research and covers 20 different countries. It’s a good place to start IMO.

I mentioned Thatcher and Regan because their policies are well documented. Successive conservative and Labour governments have continued this trend again IMO. I don’t favour either party.

The entire political system is corrupt, it’s time for something else.

  9. Are they concerned at all about the power of the people?

No society can sustain this kind of rising inequality. In fact, there is no example in human history where wealth accumulated like this and the pitchforks didn‟t eventually come out.

    ===================================================================

You can never do anything about inequality , wealth or otherwise.

  23. If Sevco take one step towards installing the netting on the roofs every club in the league should immediately and unequivocally demand that all games be relocated to another venue. If the roofs aren’t safe, they aren’t safe. Period!

If there is a problem it needs a full and independant assessment by a structural engineer and full remedial action taken to the highest of safety standards.

Sevco directors & those of the old regime should be roundly condemned in every media outlet for letting the stadium get into such an appalling condition.

273k is 0.4% If you want to be pedantic,0.42%

As I said, that barely covers the difference between death rates and birth rates.

To put that in some form of perspective for you,I read fairly recently that Japan’s population is estimated to fall by a third towards 80m due to falling birth rates and a refusal to embrace immigration. And that will severely dent its economy.

Immigration is not the enemy,MACJAY,nor are immigrants. Inequality and the resulting poverty is what is fracturing society.

Tell me about the apparently 300, 000 homeless in U.K.

    Currently.

Would it be reasonable to house them before allowing more to enter UK ?

Will the new immigrants require housing ?

    Again.

The people , apparently , voted for immigration controls.

Should the people be listened to ?

  27. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

    MACJAY

Ensuring decent levels of housing availability should be a prime factor in any government planning. It hasn’t been so in the UK for over thirty years.

Even Victorian mill-owners recognised the benefits of providing housing for their workers,as in fact did Brunel when he set up his locomotive works in Swindon.

Still,if you’re going to be ridiculed for saying there is no such thing as society, the best way to get the last laugh is to prove that by destroying it.

  28. Spending on pensions and social welfare, and healthcare will soon be approx 20% of GDP.

    That’s unsustainable.

The only way to ease that strain is to allow increased immigration. The huge majority who enter the UK are part of the working population.

For economic growth, increased housing, better healthcare through bigger budgets, increasing the number of immigrants is critical.

Or we can close the borders and watch our elderly population suffer further hardship.

It’ll take an almighty paradigm shift for an awful lot of people to recognise this. I guess for a lot of people it’s a case of ‘I’m alright jack, pull up the ladder’

For others I guess it’s a case of how can we foster economic growth, reduce homeless numbers, get better and quicker healthcare to everyone .

    Whichever floats yer boat.
