Scotland’s trophy kings meet at Celtic Park

A cursory glance at the table suggests St Johnstone are far off their double trophy winning form of last season.  The second most successful team in Scottish football over the last decade (three times more trophies than the cackle of solitary winners) are eighth in the league, five points off a top six spot.

The roof fell in on them last week as Livingston produced three goals from 35% possession and four shots on target, a statistical anomaly for a St Johnstone defence that conceded only six goals in their other eight league games this season.  This is a team with a goalkeeper who can keep them out and score at the other end, and a defence which offers opponents few opportunities.

They will be no more adventurous than Ferencvaros when they pitch up at Celtic Park tomorrow afternoon, we will need to be at our best.

That “best” is pretty decent right now.  I’m still wallowing in the Rogic-Jota move from Fir Park and its cousin, the Jota-Kyogo goal on Tuesday.  Add in the play that saw Ferenc exposed so frequently after the opening goal and we should be confident we can do the same to the winners of last season’s cups.

Dare we ponder the form of St Mirren, unbeaten in six since their 6-0 drubbing at Celtic Park?  A home game against league leaders, Newco, is unlikely to phase Jim Goodwin.

Real Betis took a point at home to Bayer Leverkusen last night.  Barring an unlikely result for Celtic in Germany (or Ferencvaros in Spain), Leverkusen and Betis are likely to occupy first and second place in the group.  The Conference place is our most achievable target.

  2. My first proper derby was 2-0 in 1970 at the start of the 70-71 season. Bobby Murdoch scored a cracker to put us ahead on a game we dominated. I can’t recall who scored the second. I went to every domestic game with my dad that season except the cup final replay vs them which we won 2-1 after a 1-1 draw. My dad went to every game except in Finland in the first round of the European cup. That season we won the double but lost the league cup to Derek Johnstone ( the first time I realised rangers were allowed to win any proper trophies !). It is interesting how easy we strolled into the Qtr finals of European cup that year. To be honest if we had not been unlucky in the draw we could have strolled it to the final without real tough competition. It does put fears such as Strachan steam reaching the last 16 beating Man U and Benfica and Milan and Spartak and Shaktar into context. We only best Kokola and Waterford to get to the qtrs that year.

Just like ujpest dosza were as tough as it got en route to the semi finals in 72.

Still some great memories of that time and some disappointments. I recall being unable to watch penalties 3-10 at the inter game standing in the exit area between the front and back stands.

“Watching St Etienne on BT, thats an away strip…”

We’ve had similar in the past. The problem with a uniform green strip with no contrast is that it makes for poor TV viewing, exacerbated if the grass or artificial turf is a similar hue. I think I remember reading somewhere that either UEFA or FIFA may ban all green strips in international competition for this reason. As an alternative, I think the Real Betis strip is a belter.
