Scott Brown challenge echoes through the years

710

The moment Scott Brown threw himself into a challenge on the edge of his own penalty area, laser-like in precision, to dispossess Barry Robson, brought the memories flooding back.  Barry was regarded by many as a journeyman when he signed for Celtic alongside Georgios Samaras in January 2008.  A month later he scored against Barcelona in the Champions League knock out stage and was well on the way to convincing the Celtic support of his ability.

At the time, Scott Brown’s fortunes were different.  He’d arrived the previous summer, a £4m buy from Hibs, but had yet to acclimatise to the central midfield role at Celtic.  In the spring of 2008, Celtic were well behind in the title race, and playing poorly.  Robson was on the bench with Brown given midfield responsibility.

The script for that season was written by a gifted hand.  As the season reached a climax, Scott was suspended for three games, punishment for a rash of misjudged tackles throughout the season.  Gordon Strachan turned to Barry, who was made for the moment.

Seven years ago Barry Robson could tackle, in fact, he could foul, without being noticed.  He brought determination and menace to a team which was questioned in the CQN comments section for an apparent lack of leadership.

Two of our last five league games that season were at Celtic Park against Rangers.  Rangers had a games in hand but the effective gap was 10 points, Celtic needed five wins, and even then their chances of winning the league were regarded as remote.  Towels were thrown everywhere.

The first, a midweek game, memorably started with Barry Robson putting a thumping challenge into Christian Dailly in the opening minutes.  The tone was set, Celtic were there to fight for everything.  Rangers thought they had the point they needed, their manager offering high-fives in the technical area as they cleared the ball late into added time.

I still can’t quite believe what happened next.  In the 95th minute Gary Caldwell threw a long ball into the Rangers box, which was won in the air by Scott McDonald, the smallest player on the field.  McDonald headed across the face of goal for Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink to head into the net.  Celtic survived to fight another day.

11 days later Celtic Park saw an equally dramatic game.  Scott McDonald (scorer of incredibly important goals) put Celtic ahead but the season looked to be in tatters as Rangers struck back with two goals direct from corner kicks.

1-2 down in a must-win game it was an uphill struggle, but McDonald struck again two minutes from the break to level the game with the assistance of a deflection.  The second half was a tense affair, so much was invested in one game of football, but one man was made for the moment.

McDonald broke free inside the box and was hauled down by Broadfoot.  Barry Robson stepped forward to take the penalty, it was the defining moment of his career.  If you’re in Celtic Park early enough before kick-off these days you can still hear the echo of the roar that went up when his penalty hit the net.  His celebration was unforgettable.

It’s remarkable that Barry is still performing at this level so many years after his peak but yesterday’s decisive challenge by Scott Brown demonstrated the enormous leaps our captain has made since becoming a Celtic player.  We need players with that fight and craft.

Many of us are still telling stories of the 1985 Scottish Cup Final. A goal down, Celtic roared back to beat Dundee United with a Frank McGarvey diving header. Frank’s offering the jersey he wore that day for auction to raise funds for Maryhill Foodbank. It’s a genuinely unique piece of Celtic history, for a very worthy cause. Check it out here.

Completely destroyed the momentum of the disheartened and turned it into a well meaning grievances into a sideshow. It was a mistake at the time and is still in my view a mistake today.

First meeting were laughed off and ridiculed by happy clappers then it was afforded happy clapping status as soon as it hit KDS and PL guided it down NL manager propaganda road show. A management choice which fortunately worked out. But that was never the basis or reason for the first 4 meetings.

    Big mistake.

There was a video report of the meeting on al-jazeera yesterday morning.

Seemed a relaxed, smiley occasion. At one bit the two were face to face, elbows on a little square table like Smith & Jones. Made me chuckle.

The point in making is that the first 4 meetings which were airing a lot of discontent was railroaded by the club turning it into a PR happy clapping roadshow.

There was a lot of discussion on various issues fans had with club and external bodies.

That stopped at the point of the road shoes and it took another year and a half to 2 years before a similar body met again to begin the process once again. Fortunately 2nd time round the UEFA or was it FIFA enforced JP role was instated giving those supporters a route to air and bring the grievances in a proper manner without the club controlling the direction and topics requiring attention.

The road shows were a pile of pish!

I know only 2 other CQNers who attended at the first 4 meetings that I recognised. One of whom was Terry O’Neill and the other who’s nome de blog escapes me. But the feeling from those I spoke to after the roadshow route was taken was that the initial meetings and forum to air fans grievances was railroaded. That is my view to this day.

The meetings were never at any point setup to sell Neil Lennon as manager.

It was a error, a large one in my opinion, to allow the grievances to be Side show Bobbed for the happy clapping PR stunt it turned out to be.

Re questions on our scouting recruitment and John Park

I got the impression from the AGM, that the board felt our scouting and youth network could be improved.

There was nothing implicitly said about scouting of senior players, and i am reading into the way / tone of answers rather than the specific words.

On youth development there was a view that board were disappointed with number of young players coming through.

Also, it always confused me why we recruited Peter Houston, but didn’t seem to replace him.

Completely fobbed off. But I was surprised to hear tonight that the fob off was offered to PL on a plate by Jeanette Findlay. I was not aware of that before today. Disappointed by that news.

But thankfully a similar forum which Jeanette again chaired was reinstated latterly after even she must have realised she was duped. Not duped in the way DM was duped at the Huns but PL duped. I’m sure her intentions were good and that the grievances would be aired to a wider forum and acted upon. But that wasn’t the case. Hence the regrouping a year or two later.

I saw all the stuff about her comments, and as she was standing for election in the constituency where I live, I decided to write to her and asked her to explain her statement. I wanted to know why any Celtic fan would want to vote for someone who thought I was scum.

There was no on-line information available indicating that she had apologised or offered some context around her tweets. I thought that was extremely odd. (I don’t buy newspapers.)

She visited me at home the week before the election.

To be fair, I thought that took courage and I was impressed by her willingness to discuss her version of events face to face.

She explained that she had told the MSM her version of events and that they had not carried the story. That only Spiers at the london Times would do so.

She told me she had been furious at the time and that she regreted her actions. I felt that was acceptable, in the sense that she was just 17, and her own understanding of the situation was that it was Celtic fans that had damaged seats.

At this point I don’t know if Celtic fans had wrecked seats, or if there were seats damaged by sevco fans.

I wanted a reassurance that she was not anti- Celtic and did not have unacceptable views about the Celtic family.

My overall view is that she was telling me the truth.
