Scott Brown defence, pyro problems, the joy of Ryan Christie

265

Scott Brown was assaulted at Ibrox on Sunday and was relentlessly taunted for a family bereavement.  His trademark celebration was understated but marked the treatment he received.  He has been cited by the SFA for “not acting in the best interests of Association Football.”  There is plenty of precedent for Celtic’s legal team to call in his defence.

I have stood within two yards of Celtic fans throwing pyrotechnics onto the field of play.  I have also been in a stairwell, exiting a game with thousands of other packed Celtic fans, when a device went off to the delight of a handful, causing panic to hundreds of others.

If you think appealing to a desire not to damage the reputation of Celtic fans will stop those throwing pyrotechnics, you are wrong.  The reputation of Celtic fans is inconsequential to anyone who throws an item at a player or onto the field.  This is their chance to set their own rules, their personal reputation remains just fine.  If you think they are going to stop because Neil Lennon tells them to, you are deluded.

This will result in blanket video surveillance, a handful of prosecutions, and then we will get back to normal, when Celtic fans’ reputation was the envy of world football.

How much have we missed Ryan Christie?  It is not just what he personally brings, it is having him, Callum McGregor and James Forrest on the field at the same time allows us to move the ball at a pace that is not possible without them.

  1. hi ghuys, cant see any hope for us in the hampden hunnery, ive justed posted on another site, maybe a European league or moving down here to englandshire, away from the corrupt sfa might give us a lifeline,,any thoughts.hh.

  2. Not much changed 1952 it was the Irish Tricolour deemed being provocative now it is a Celtic Captain celebrating a victory at Celtic park that is now viewed as provocative.

On New Year’s Day 1952, fan disorder between Celtic and Rangers led to renewed attention on football violence. A plea was issued from Glasgow magistrates to the SFA to ban any flags which could be seen as provocative to supporters of other teams. SFA official George Graham led the charge that Celtic should take down the tricolour or face suspension. In spite of protests by Celtic Chairman Bob Kelly, and more surprisingly Rangers Chairman John F. Wilson, the SFA council voted 26-7 that the flag must be taken down.

    1. Ridiculous citation for Scott Brown and Club.

Celtic Board must insist on its withdrawal or we leave the Scottish Cup,and I say that sitting on £100 +worth of tickets.

    2. I apply for every away game or Cup game within 15 minutes of availability being announced, yet I can never secure seats of my choice as they are already earmarked or allocated.

So whoever does the allocating must know the block numbers and areas all the trouble comes from which should result in names being blocked until reviewed and cleared.

3.Investors or Firms who are given tickets as part of their Contract should be told that the tickets are not transferable as although they may be attending only 4 games a year, passing the ticket to a relation or nephew, is where the control goes wrong, any seats in this category, which are found to be used by a perpetrator should be revoked stating they are in breach of Health and Safety by passing tickets to irresponsible individuals.

The Club can sort this providing they dont mind giving some people bloody noses.

4 As for the Police,a joke,I could with relative accuracy at most grounds, indicate the potential hot spots, flares etc are not random, the are ignited within a group as to give cover.

5.Lastly,The Green Brigade, who do a lot of excellent work, and been given some latitude by the Club, have issued a statement, which I believe was meant criticise the ” Banger” incident, however within the statement they made the following comment which in my view was ill conceived as it can be mis-interpreted.

why not just say THEY ARE FORBIDDEN.AND WE WILL NOT SUPPORT THEIR USE

To say they support ” safe ” use is not acceptable.

“As an ultras group, we support the safe, sensible use of pyrotechnics, however the launching of pyrotechnics on to the park or in the direction of people is both unnecessary and counterproductive to any aspirations of normalising its use.”GREEN BRIGADE.

They are really pulling out the stops now,we need to nip this now,or next Season will be impossible.

In our time The great Irish famine.

Only the BBC could find 3 Irish historians that refuse to blame Westminster for the famine. Bragg plays to the script. Implies the Irish had a preference for potato over everything else except when they refer to cannibalism.

Skirts round the fact that the natives were all removed from owning their land and then employed to work that land and for their toil they got to rent a slum giving their pay back to their paymasters and being allowed to each the cheapest crop that had the least use for the empire ie. in 19th century potato does keep on a ship sent to feed the colonies, but corn does.

Doesn’t mention tennants were almost exclusively Catholic and land owners were exclusively Prod by law.

Doesn’t discuss the fact that Westminster saw the famine as a way of reducing the Catholic population which was way more than the unionist. Brief reference to it being Gods will!

Only mention of religion is when one historian blurs out some tennants were Catholic and they were just as cruel to the victims as other religions.

As has been proved in Norway, it is possible to use pyrotechnics safely at a football match, couple of clubs in the states also use them on a regular basis. I posted a couple of links on previous page re this issue.

Lots of things are banned by governments etc but that doesn’t mean we should have an adult conversation about these issues and try and resolve them through dialog and the use of scientific studies or other countries experience.

I think it’s Norway that is leading the way in this field and trying at least to work with the fans on developing safer pyros that aren’t a fire hazard.

Young fans in this country, just like you and me, have acces to the Internet and know about these developments so why is it that the position of our authorities is just to ignore the issue and refuse to even take part in any dialog?

  12. eddieinkirkmichael on

Football fans in Norway have taken another major step towards illustrating their commitment to minimising risks and supporting the responsible use related to pyrotechnics in football: they teamed up with producers to develop safety certificates in line with EU standards that would allow the use of specific pyrotechnical devices inside football grounds.

The move followed a development of increasing prohibition of pyrotechnical devices in Norwegian football by some police and fire brigades claiming that the devices weren’t designed for the use inside football stadia. Other than that, the general use of pyrotechnics is generally allowed for supporters under controlled conditions in Norwegian stadia.

The FSE members from the Norwegian Supporters Alliance (NSA) teamed up with a company working with pyrotechnics in Norway. Together with this company, the NSA can now import all commonly used types of pyrotechnical devices accepted by the fans for the use inside stadia: flares, smoke in every colour as well as stroboscope flares but no bangers. The items are no longer classified as emergency signs and can be dedicated to the use inside football stadia, in line with EU standards.

The certificate was approved by Norwegian authorities, and consequently, this allows police and fire departments to approve the usage of these items inside stadia. To put it in the words of the Norwegian FSE members from the NSA: “Pyrotechnics are officially not a crime in Norway!”

In line with the Norwegian model, police and fire authorities still have to approve the use of the above mentioned items in every single stadium for every single match as applied for by the supporters. But thanks to the responsible and tireless engagement of the Norwegian fans to find constructive solutions, the prevention of risk related to the use of pyrotechnics in football has been taken to a new formalised level – by the fans themselves.

Member groups affiliated to the NSA now even have the opportunity to order these specific certified pyrotechnical items via the NSA.

We will not be allowed to move out of Scotland without the Huns coming with us.

As I’ve posited before, we require to give 2 years notice to leave the SPFL.

If we were to win our 8-in-a-row this summer and then hand in our 2 season notice, after 10-in-a-row, we would have 2 years to find another association to host us. With Peter Lawwell’s executive position on the ECA and its ties with UEFA, who are more open these days to cross-border competitions, we might force the authorities’ hands ?

And I’m sure the Huns wouldn’t follow us to, say, the FAI !!!

not sure if the charge against Brown is for the gesture towards the fans, or for his behaviour more generally during the game…

if the latter, we could have some fun with it…

Philmac brings a succinct analysis to this trumped up Broony ‘situation’.

In a nutshell, it’s SFA pandering – moves to “gratify or indulge (an immoral or distasteful desire or taste).”

The SFA are in the same boat as the Scoddish MSM; they co-dependently believe the blue pound is vital.

That we triumph now and before we have somewhere better to go, is doubly heroic given the domestic game is well and truly ‘fixed’.

“Mass migration to OUR area at Celtic Park”

    Really? Your area? Entitlement?

If it is your area, which, IMO, it is not,

then you should be able to control it better.

Almost every extremely detrimental, anti social, anachronistic, self destructive, self absorbed, stupefyingly immature, hunlike, hooliganistic, ANTI CELTIC, action like missile throwing, pyro lighting and recently, pitch invasion, emanate from around “your” area.

    Sort that out.

Don’t issue vacuous statements about believing in pyrotechnics.

Your club have unequivocally stated that they don’t want anything to do with them.

They have no place in our stadium, or any other.

If you want to let off your fireworks, then f… , sorry, find an alternative venue because you are not welcome to do so at “OURS”.

I know, at times, the north curve, (not necessarily GB) can generate a good vibe, but they are a small percentage of our support.

I also believe the practice of our team going to the north curve on winning significant games is now counterproductive.

The immature in that area feel vindicated in their type of support.

Those who hate us see only the team’s tacit approval of the excesses of their behaviour.

The vitriol, in this best little bigoted country, at the moment, is bad.

In the next two years , moving towards the 10, it will only get worse.

We, now, more than ever, under outright blatant, full on attack, need not to offer easy targets to our enemies.

Pyrotechnics, missile throwing, pitch invasion and sectarian chanting, (formally the sole provenance of both Govan clubs), do not in any way assist our club.

If you, GB, are true Celtic supporters then you would unequivocally renounce such practice.

Then this morning we hear he’s been has been accused of breaching a Scottish FA rule that states players, coaches and officials should “act in the best interests of football”.

Mibbes that’s because they wallopers at hunden are thinking the Tims feel he’s a bit over the top at times and although they couldnae find anything plausible tae do him last night, they are now scraping the barrel.

He as a youngster spent all his summers over in Connemara and then his teens in the black north and the Irish are just like the Italians, not just in faith either, loose lips do cost lives.

One Friday morning, November 22, 1974 to be exact, I was standing at the station talking tae my pals possibly about the game the next day at swinecastle, I was married with 2 young weans at the time, he also caught the same train as me and would often come over tae say hello tae us before joining his own friends.

That morning after his wee hello he said he wanted tae talk tae me in private. “Don’t mention Celtic or Ireland the day son ok” he said. A wee check of the date will tell you why. With age does come wisdom at times.

BTW we dropped a point the next day tae the 2nd bottom calvinists as the Buzz Bomb missed a penalty, fortunately deidco lost 0-1 tae a Des Bremner goal which kept us at the top of the League for at least another 6 weeks.

I’ve been going to watch Celtic since 1954/5…I saw us win the league cup for the first time in a replay v Partick Thistle in 1956…wee Bobby Collins scored the third in a 3-0 win…he was my favourite player till he left…my dad always talked about big John McPhail, (who scored the first two goals that day) Charlie Tully…and his personal favourite, Willie Fernie…he was also proud that John Jack, our centre-half on the day, was of Lithuanian parentage, like himself……

I was forunate in that I grew up within walking distance of both Celtic Park and Hampden…I was a total football nutcase…I loved playing it…I loved watching it…and I loved listening to the second half on the radio…(Peter Thompson and George Davidson…grrrr!!)…in the early days they didn’t broadcast the whole game…1958 was about Pele…a young giant who appeared from nowhere and captivated the whole football world…1960 it was Puskas, Gento and Di Stefano of that fabulous Real Madrid team…1967 was about the greatest team ever to play in our galaxy…(I can’t comment on other galaxies)

So, what am I getting at?…Well, I loved my football first and foremost for the game itself…if there was a good atmosphere, even better!…and at Celtic games the atmosphere was great…well, mostly…at least, quite often… :-)…but it was always spontaneous…the singing starting in the middle of the Celtic end or in the Jungle…but it was the players on the pitch who created the atmosphere…I remember many a dull game on a dreich, rainy winter Saturday that suddenly burst into life because of a piece of brilliance from Alec Byrne or a diving header from Johnny Divers…and that would get the crowd going…the atmosphere is always there, it just needs the spark from the players to get it and keep it going…(losing 1-3 to Real Madrid and marching down London Road en masse, celebrating our team)…how many great, special, memorable days and nights have we experienced over the decades? (aul’ yins r us)…and yet there was no green brigade…

I understand they bring a bit of colour and often demonstrate a good sense of humour in the displays…I just don’t think they are necessary…in fact, in some of our really dull games they struggle to create what is essentially an awful, artificial atmosphere, with that bloody monotonous drumming…but the real concern I have is the consequence of attracting an unsavoury element to the games…young kids looking for a tribe to join…and the green brigade feels glamorous to them…are they there for the football or the buzz?…I go primarily for the football…if the atmosphere is good, fab!…If not, so be it!!…it will be better next game…

Anyway, it’s awe Broonies fault…soak the bard!!!
