Scott Brown extends influence on until 2021

88

The worst kept secret at Celtic Park last night was that captain Scott Brown would sign a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2021 – potentially ‘Here for 10-in-a-row’.  Scott is already one of the most successful Celtic players of all time.  He became the third captain to lead the team to the treble and the first Scottish club captain to retain a treble.

His contribution going forward will be less than that which has already past, but his influence on discipline among the squad, at and beyond training, should not be underestimated.  He is a leader and a winner, and will ensure standards do not slip.

I know the day is getting on, but work is still going on.

  1. Rock Tree Bhoy- we have had from the end of January 2018 Window,to get a decent CB in,a year, what have we done about it? HH

  2. I’m still hopeful we will sign the right back ( on loan )

If we don’t, I think it will have been down to the player deciding not to come.

    Hail Hail

ROCK TREE BHOY – thats a great approach.

Here we are at the death of a transfer window trying to solve our most serious flaw. aint right my friend

Our defensive record is fine. Up to the break our serious flaw was not creating and taking enough chances consistently. We’ve signed 3 players in attacking positions and it seems to have done the trick

  4. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

Hi STEBHOY – agree with some of the frustrations, particularly around the centre-backs position (and remember keeping Boyata last year was a £9M ‘cost’ that – if managed better – could have seen him leaving and us having plenty scope to replace), and also cover for right-back position.

I know it was late last night – but I gave a wee bit more information – possibly from a different viewpoint in the stadium – that might change your mind about the non-penalty, which you felt was the correct decision – repeated here for ease of reference:

    —————

Agree that ball was to hand.

However – I’d make a couple of points:

    1. Was it a penalty?

Both of the defender’s hands were extended upwards (the ‘unnatural position’ explanation first aired on British TV when justifying a ‘penalty’ awarded against Bobo Balde) to deliberately create a larger barrier to a successful pass across the St Johnston goalmouth.

In those circumstances, it is definitely a penalty – I would not have been surprised to see it given against Celtic or any other team; that’s not paranoia – it is because it is a clear penalty.

(For the record, Bobo’s ‘hand-ball’ was never a penalty in a million years – the attacker’s head glanced a crossed ball in a direction going away from goal onto Bobo’s hand which was about six inches behind the attacker’s head).

    2. More importantly – why did the Referee not give the penalty?

I don’t know if you were at the game, but me and Wee BGFC sit behind the goals in the Celtic end, so had a clear and very up-close view of the whole incident.

As the Celtic players were protesting to him, the Referee indicated to the Celtic players that the ball had, in his view, hit the St Johnston player’s shoulder – the Referee very clearly motioned to pat his own left shoulder to indicate where the ball had hit.

He was indicating that the cross had not hit the St Johnstone player’s hand, but had bounced off his shoulder. That was the justification he was giving for not awarding the penalty – nothing about it being a non-deliberate hand-ball.

That’s what made this an even worse decision – it was blindingly obviously a hand-ball – nowhere near his shoulder. In full sight of both Referee and Assistant Referee.

It is – in my opinion – implausable that both officials thought it hit the player’s shoulder, as the Referee very clearly indicated.

    ———————–

Hope it helps to have a description of a different view of the incident.

Where did the term ‘dicking about’ come from – and what does it mean :-)) ??

Just consulted the Dictionary of phrase and fable( 20 th edition) edited by Susie Dent …no dicking about in there ???

Valencia have said tickets will not be available online and have to be bought from the Mestalla stadium itself.

It seems like an attempt by the Valencian authorities / police to prevent an influx of Celtic fans to the city / stadium.

The regulations released last night state you must have a Spanish ID card to purchase tickets from the stadium. Maximum two tickets per person

I was able to sort myself two tickets today due the fortunate reason my other half’s brother lives there. Even then he said they were very reluctant to give them to him suspecting he was a Celtic fan chancing his arm

If i was you i would try to get up to the city as soon as possible or if you know anyone who could get them for you?

Good luck anyway and if you get sorted meet you in St. Pats for a pint

McKenna to Stoke £7mil…..thank the Lord…

I heard Stoke are going to loan him to us…fact ?

  9. 50 shades of green on

And even though its a big furry acorn eating bit of news, I’m delighted Broonie is hear for 10 in a row….????

  10. With Boyata probably leaving in the next few hours or the summer and Benkovic not our player with seemingly no possibility of signing him ; I would have welcomed Scott McKenna. At least we would have had time to prepare for the Euro qualifiers.

This is not hindsight, Turkeybhoy , myself and some others stated this numerous times.

    However, overall not too unhappy.

    HH.

  11. Re: McKenna, this is from The Press & Journal:

Rumours have been speculating tonight that Dons defender Scott McKenna is off to Stoke.

The Championship side placed a £5 million bid yesterday that was rejected by Aberdeen.

It is now suggested that Stoke have increased their bid to £7 million to secure the Scotland international’s signature.

The Press and Journal understand that this is false information and that no fresh offer has been received by Aberdeen FC.

Aston Villa had a £6.5 million bid for the 22-year-old turned down on deadline day in August, while Celtic and Hull City have previously been linked with the central defender.

Seems like he’s staying (unless we go in with a last minute bid).

    Efe’s still looking for a club…

  14. Rock Tree Bhoy…………Nothing like a bit of humour in these dark January days. Well done you have me laughing out loud with that post. FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY

  15. It would appear we now have more loans than Sevco’s account department. :-)

Anyway, I hope the new guys do well while we have them. It’s been a promising start.

  16. If the German right back is signed on a short term loan then it’s a good decision.

Ralston’s injury has come at an awkward time but he is the future in that area.

No gripe from me on this one.

But i do find it incredulous that our two first choice centre half are leaving at the end of the season and no forward planning was done.

The AEK Athens debacle where we we were dumped out of the lucrative Champions league by a poor team should have been a lesson learned.

  17. CELTIC are delighted to have signed Maryan Shved on a four-and-a-half year contract from Karpaty Lviv.

The 21-year-old, who becomes the first Ukrainian to join Celtic, is thrilled to be making the move, but both the winger and the club also believe that it will be beneficial to his long-term career with the Hoops to keep playing with Karpaty Lviv for the rest of their season. To that end, he will return to Ukraine until April before returning to Glasgow.

  18. Roll up! RollUp!

Only 5 and a half hours left for you to express your cynicism/ disappointment/ outrage/ and/or embarrasment at Celtic’s penny-pinching/ lack of forward planning/ inability to “land” players or “do” deals and/or “dicking about”. Tomorrow will be exclusively reserved for expressions of regret and recrimination so that will leave no room for our cynical outrage and embarrassment.

We can see other better run clubs land EPL players of the calibre of Defoe & Davis while we sign obscure Ukrainian and Ivory Coast internationalists and then don’t play them. This has a direct impact on results. Last night we scored only 2 goals against St. Johnstone whilst the well-run Gers scored 50% more goals than us against a team whose jerseys were just as blue as the team we played against.

We don’t have enough Centre Backs to cover for injury, form and suspension and we should sell Comperr and Jack Hendry and Boyata so that we can get new bling. You don’t go to the cinema every week to see the same film and I’m fed up with the same old faces that won us 7iar. It’s just gotta change!

I’m fed up with this winning slump

Sky Germany reporting loan agreed for Dortmund’s Jeremy Toljan coming to Celtic Glasgow.

  20. Looking for a bit of help…

A week or so ago ( maybe longer ) someone posted a link to a charity skydive for a bereavement room for the royal hospital for sick children , would be grateful for any pointers to the appeal…

    Thanks in advance

  21. You have to laugh I suppose; we have 5 (yes 5) centre half’s at the moment. To get the quality we need in January would be very difficult as it is but do we really think we can bring in top quality and sit them on the bench or risk putting them in as a new partnership to see how it works? Personally I’d buy McKenna and let him play at Pittodrie till the summer and bring him in when Boyata and Benkovic are away.

We did try and get 2 (seemingly) quality right backs in but were priced out of the deals or the club refused to sell. What can we do about that? The 6 month loan of Jeremy Toljan is a good move; no buy option at the moment but that may change.

As was pointed out earlier, we have strengthen in attack and now in defence. 2 permanent deals and 3 (high quality) loan deals so why the misery?
