Scott Brown, Great Scottish Runner

875

You seldom hear football people speak as unguardedly as Peter Grant did to The Herald yesterday about Scott Brown.  “If somebody had offered us £4m (in 2010)?  I would have driven him down the road myself”.  The tone of Peter’s piece was supportive, though.  Our former assistant manager affirms Scott is a vastly improved performer since.  I agree.

You never really know what is going on inside a squad.  Footballers play with injuries, many find the distractions of wealth all-consuming and some are simply deployed incorrectly.  At the #19 game last week I recalled the form of Stiliyan Petrov under John Barnes, he was lost, especially when playing right back.  Bobby Petta also looked out of sorts under Barnes but within weeks of playing for Martin O’Neill both were among the most valuable assets at the club.

Neil Lennon told us last week that Scott Brown was unfit during last season’s Champions League campaign.  It’s clear that he is an incredibly more effective player when fit, but Peter Grant suggests Brown has also learned positional discipline, a subject he has previously been criticised here for.

A lot of Scott’s contribution is off the ball.  He closes space, filling the park with a presence, which is defensively important, especially on Champions League duty.  I’ve never seen Celtic’s yardage stats on players but you have to think he’ll top the list most weeks, he is the Great Scottish Runner, but all that energy needed to be harnessed correctly, which is perhaps what Scott is learning from former midfielder, Neil Lennon.

The next achievement to look out for from Scott is a marquee performance on a European stage………

Which leads us onto the Great Scottish Run.  You can still sign up for the run, and if you’ve registered already, or are still to register, you can participate in the 1254125 campaign.

The heart and soul of our community is something we cannot take for granted.  It has flourished because you, and countless thousands before you, have decided to improve the lives of those around you by getting involved in the name of Celtic.

On Sunday 6 October there is a 10k and Half Marathon.  If that is beyond you. There are family events taking place the day before.

The first thing you need to do is sign up for the Great Scottish Run, or here for one of the family events.

Once you’ve done that, you can register for the 1254125 campaign here.

Then you can create a donations page here.  Click Start Fundraising, search for Celtic Charity, setup your My Donate account).

  1. Masty…. Thanks again. I knew John McFadyen very well. He was the keeper of our banner and was a serious member of the Celtic Film Club. He claimed me, and people like me, ruined Lisbon for him by running onto the pitch thus denying him his photoshot possibilities with Celtic running round the stadium with the cup – like Real Madrid at Hampden in 1960. It was never going to happen- Celtic had just won the European Cup ( as my Dad had predicted ) and we, as supporters, just were overwhelmed with joy. I will take to my grave ( but with no photo ) the image of standing on the 18 yard line with my Dad and 2 brothers watching Billy lift theEuropean Cup. Just magic!

  3. Garcia Lorca & Masty,

Great tales, fascinating reading. Garcia, you mention Mr Duman, the tailor. I think his son, Alex, was a client when I was a whippersnapper in advertising. He owned Krazy House and City Cash Tailors, the latter on the Saltmarket. His great trick to get around trading standards on Sale advertising was to hold a Closing Down Sale at Krazy House and an Opening Sale at CCT. He never closed or ‘opened ‘ either. Amazing character.

How Duffield got the jobs he got with such a shallow mind………….i think we know the answer right enough…

    ………………………………..

One of his failed companies called “Knights Templar” gives us a clue to how he gets the plum jobs.

What intrigues me is why he jumped from one such job in a hurry to look after his ailing parents?

I can see Lenny playing Pukki from the off …..replace when blowin’…maybe with Bo, although recognise recent contribution of Stokesy I just don’t feel he moves quickly enough to trouble Italian defenders away from home…wouldn’t worry about bringing him on at some point depending on circumstances.

Izzy is great v SPL fodder, most of the time- but leaves us exposed in CL too often for it to be bad luck, so I’d pop Chico in there and leave slot in central mid for a guy that has never let us down (when fit)

All the chat about Mulgrew & Broony partnership for Scotland – aye!! in the team that got humped 2 nil – at home ..jeezo guys!!

If Joe is fit, this is the team for me:

..maybe not Lenny tho’ eh but I back him 100% to get it right over the 6 games to secure 2nd slot.

keeping it tight, hitting them on breaks…at lightning pace

see how they like that little lot

  8. Masty….. My wee brother ( in Milan tonight ) is the bus conveyor of the club that had continued the Sarsfield tradition. He learned his skills from our Dad.

  12. Garcia Lorca, The St Johnstone game should be shown at 10am in the Parlour Bar. It would be great to watch it with you, if you can make it.

  13. What is Andy Walker talking about on SSB tonight regarding “Rangers cannot afford to sack Ian Black”?

When questioned why he said, it would open a whole can of worms.

What is it that Ian Black knows that would be so bad?

It cannot be the 100’s of players who have been betting, most people don’t see a problem with that………..unless of course you bet against your own club.

So what does Black know that would stop Rangers from sacking him and would make it so bad for Scottish football?

In fact what does Andy Walker know and how many others know that is not for public consumption???

  14. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

Andy Walker being anti CFC / pro Hun …surprised naw

It’s part of his remit as the token Tim ….

He’s on about a betting culture at ibrokes that regularly bets against there own team not to win, how else can you explain all those dodgie results against part time footballers who work hard all week in real jobs and who only train two or three times a week for two hours at a time ? HH

  16. Masty, and others, thanks for the info re brake club and Gorbals.

From Hospital St myself but sure those that grew up in the area in the 20s & 30s would have stories to tell. Knew the shop, in Thistle St, as closed when I was growing up, but not til I read John Burrowes book on Benny Lynch did I find out it used to be a tearoom where Benny would drop in for a cuppa. My mother would also refer to the streets by their old names too.

    Thanks again.
