Scott Brown, Great Scottish Runner

875

You seldom hear football people speak as unguardedly as Peter Grant did to The Herald yesterday about Scott Brown.  “If somebody had offered us £4m (in 2010)?  I would have driven him down the road myself”.  The tone of Peter’s piece was supportive, though.  Our former assistant manager affirms Scott is a vastly improved performer since.  I agree.

You never really know what is going on inside a squad.  Footballers play with injuries, many find the distractions of wealth all-consuming and some are simply deployed incorrectly.  At the #19 game last week I recalled the form of Stiliyan Petrov under John Barnes, he was lost, especially when playing right back.  Bobby Petta also looked out of sorts under Barnes but within weeks of playing for Martin O’Neill both were among the most valuable assets at the club.

Neil Lennon told us last week that Scott Brown was unfit during last season’s Champions League campaign.  It’s clear that he is an incredibly more effective player when fit, but Peter Grant suggests Brown has also learned positional discipline, a subject he has previously been criticised here for.

A lot of Scott’s contribution is off the ball.  He closes space, filling the park with a presence, which is defensively important, especially on Champions League duty.  I’ve never seen Celtic’s yardage stats on players but you have to think he’ll top the list most weeks, he is the Great Scottish Runner, but all that energy needed to be harnessed correctly, which is perhaps what Scott is learning from former midfielder, Neil Lennon.

The next achievement to look out for from Scott is a marquee performance on a European stage………

Which leads us onto the Great Scottish Run.  You can still sign up for the run, and if you’ve registered already, or are still to register, you can participate in the 1254125 campaign.

The heart and soul of our community is something we cannot take for granted.  It has flourished because you, and countless thousands before you, have decided to improve the lives of those around you by getting involved in the name of Celtic.

On Sunday 6 October there is a 10k and Half Marathon.  If that is beyond you. There are family events taking place the day before.

The first thing you need to do is sign up for the Great Scottish Run, or here for one of the family events.

Once you’ve done that, you can register for the 1254125 campaign here.

Then you can create a donations page here.  Click Start Fundraising, search for Celtic Charity, setup your My Donate account).

When Celtic beat and the opposition get a red card 2 minutes from time, with Celtic 3-0 up at the time, the Beeb duly report Celtic knock out 10 man .

The Beeb accurately reported the Sevco game the other night with the red card incident buried way down into the 2nd last paragraph.

And of course the Beeb also highlighted the fact that QOS were only 1-0 down at the time the red-card was issued and Sevco then took full advantage of the extra man to run out 3-0 winners.

Thanks Beeb, your reporting standards, the highest in the world, just keep on blazing the trail for others to follow.

  13. SoT listed the probable AC line up for tonight as :-

    Abbiati

    Zaccardo Zapata Mexes Constant

    Nocerino De Jong Muntari

    Birsa

    Balotelli Matri

    Subs —Amelia/ Iotti/ Emanuelson /Modic / /Poli / Cristante / Robinho..

Their goalie is experienced- 36 years old and has 4 Italian caps. He has worked his way up from 3rd choice keeper by going on loan to play first team football and impressing. Some controversy about his espousal of fascism and feeling it is very compatible with his Catholicism

RB- Zacccardo has 17 Italian caps, is 31 and, though new to Milan has played regularly for the likes of Bologna, Palermo and Parma where he had a good scoring record

CB- Zapata 26 year old capped 16 times by Colombia. New to Milan but played regularly for Udinese and Villareal

CB- Mexes- 31 year old with 29 caps for France. A regular starter for Auxerre, Roma and Milan.

LB- Constant- 26 year old French-born but capped 18 times by Guinea. He has played 25 times for AC since June 2012

RM- Nocerino- 28 year old with 15 Italian caps, played 61 times for AC since 2011

DM- De Jong- 28 year old with 67 caps for the Dutch. Man City played £18m for him and Milan paid up to £5m for him

LM- Muntari- 29 year old capped 78 times by Ghana. Portsmouth paid $7m for him, and Inter around £13m,. AC got him on a “free” after paying for him on loan for a year. He played 15 times last year.

AM- Birsa- 27 year old with 64 Slovenian caps. New to Milan. Has not been a regular scorer for some time.

CF-Balotelli- 23 year old with 26 Italy caps. Youngest Inter player to score a CL goal at 18. Man City paid £18m for him and AC just slightly less.

CF- Matri- 29 year old with 5 Italy caps. Juve bought him in a deal worth up to £15m and AC bought him for under £10m this year.

    Subs-

Amelia- GK- 31 year old with 9 Italy caps

Iotti- 17 year old youth LB or CB

Emanuelson – 27 year old left wing back with 16 caps for the Dutch

Modic – 17 year old Bosnian midfielder

Poli- 23 year old midfielder with 3 full Italy caps

Cristante – 18 year old midfielder. 1 CL sub app.

Robinho – 29 year old striker capped 90 times by Brazil

Overall, this is an AC team weakened, by their own standards but assembled at a cost far beyond our squad. They have a weak bench but have a Brazilian with 90 caps, a Dutch player with 16 caps and a 3 times capped Italian there. I doubt we’ll see their kids playing unless they are well ahead.

This is no aging team of 35+ year old players (apart from their keeper) but a team in the prime ages of 26 to 32 largely. Experienced and cynical and are 1/2 with most bookies to win the match.

I worry inversely to the optimistic mood of our crowd. I saw Galatasaray ship 6 goals, Olympiacos 4 and Plizen 3 last night AND they were all playing at home.

Every time we go into a CL group match as a 4th seed, we risk a drubbing that we have avoided up to now. At this point in the day, I worry that Barca, Ajax and AC, at their own home grounds, can administer such a doing to teams that are better than we are. However, the nearer we get to kick off, the more confident I become that we will, not only escape a doing, but administer some lessons of our own. This club is magical sometimes.

  18. Loved the story about Lubo

I was at university in Sunderland in 1998 and had travelled up for the home game against Dundee when Lubo made his debut, I remember Lubo had an impressive debut crossing with either feet and he had at least one assist from a cross.

I travelled up for the game against the manky men and sat with my brother in FS2 and remember being pretty apprehensive about the game. By the end of 90 minutes I was in dreamland, beating them 5-1 so far exceeded my expectations and Lubo was fantastic. Willie Young was the ref and sent off Scott Wilson for a really bad challenge when we are already 1-0 up.

The Sunderland bus fairly bounced back to The Ivy that night and a good night was had by all! So good I phoned my brother at 3am steaming, singing down the phone! Something he brings up from time to time!

I’m nervous about tonight but cautiously optimistic! Can’t wait for work to finish, just got an email from my nephew asking why it’s not 19:45 yet!!

For Ned Flanders to dismiss as “unknown” a man who had played international football for 10 years including a World Cup QF (in which he was red carded – for swinging his leg in dissent at which point his boot whizzed past the referee btw) speaks volumes

    What a read!

Dr Jo knew exactly what he was doing. Very wise man.

I lived in Birmingham between 1986 and 1995. A pal of mine was the youth coach at Aston Villa whose claim to fame was that he had rejected Brian McClair as a youth. So when Dr Jo took over at Villa, my pal said the players were in uproar becuase this “foreigner” demanded training in the afternoons and was telling them what to eat. etc etc.

It says a lot that my pal stayed and Dr Jo left.

Celtic benefitted in the long run.

When Lubo scored with that left foot shot agin thems, after Henrik’s dummy, every Tim’s heart lifted with the knowledge that we had signed a gem. One of the most gifted players ever. And he “got” Celtic. And the Celtic support “got” him. Oh yes!

I am sure that NFL has swallowed no guff about a weakened, inexperienced AC with no cover, but he will be aware of which players are not fancied by the AC crowd and he will try to pressure them into mistakes and lost confidence.

However, our team will have to prove that they are concentrating at the required level as AC have researched us too and are aware of our weaknesses too.
