Scott Brown, Great Scottish Runner

875

You seldom hear football people speak as unguardedly as Peter Grant did to The Herald yesterday about Scott Brown.  “If somebody had offered us £4m (in 2010)?  I would have driven him down the road myself”.  The tone of Peter’s piece was supportive, though.  Our former assistant manager affirms Scott is a vastly improved performer since.  I agree.

You never really know what is going on inside a squad.  Footballers play with injuries, many find the distractions of wealth all-consuming and some are simply deployed incorrectly.  At the #19 game last week I recalled the form of Stiliyan Petrov under John Barnes, he was lost, especially when playing right back.  Bobby Petta also looked out of sorts under Barnes but within weeks of playing for Martin O’Neill both were among the most valuable assets at the club.

Neil Lennon told us last week that Scott Brown was unfit during last season’s Champions League campaign.  It’s clear that he is an incredibly more effective player when fit, but Peter Grant suggests Brown has also learned positional discipline, a subject he has previously been criticised here for.

A lot of Scott’s contribution is off the ball.  He closes space, filling the park with a presence, which is defensively important, especially on Champions League duty.  I’ve never seen Celtic’s yardage stats on players but you have to think he’ll top the list most weeks, he is the Great Scottish Runner, but all that energy needed to be harnessed correctly, which is perhaps what Scott is learning from former midfielder, Neil Lennon.

The next achievement to look out for from Scott is a marquee performance on a European stage………

Which leads us onto the Great Scottish Run.  You can still sign up for the run, and if you’ve registered already, or are still to register, you can participate in the 1254125 campaign.

The heart and soul of our community is something we cannot take for granted.  It has flourished because you, and countless thousands before you, have decided to improve the lives of those around you by getting involved in the name of Celtic.

On Sunday 6 October there is a 10k and Half Marathon.  If that is beyond you. There are family events taking place the day before.

The first thing you need to do is sign up for the Great Scottish Run, or here for one of the family events.

Once you’ve done that, you can register for the 1254125 campaign here.

Then you can create a donations page here.  Click Start Fundraising, search for Celtic Charity, setup your My Donate account).

  1. Scott Brown will always split the support…………..just that type of player.

From losing his sister at such a young age ……and not long after his massive move to us……..on to horrendous injury problems………..I honestly thought he might not play again.

Scott Brown is now turning into tne player I thought he would become.

Although I am still to be convinced he is totally injury free.

One fact I would point out.. Celtic are better with Broony in the team…..no doubt about it.

  2. Maybe Fat Sally is hanging about in the bushes at Lennoxtown…

    September 17 – One of football’s more

bizarre episodes is still gripping the

Italian public and media after a coach

from Genoa was caught “spying” on

    local rivals Sampdoria dressed in

    Rambo-style camouflage ahead of their

    derby clash last Sunday.

Youth team coach Luca De Pra has

been suspended after he was found in

    bushes watching a Sampdoria training

    session.

    Sampdoria said in a tongue-in-cheek

statement he was hiding “like Rambo”

    but “failed to overcome Sampdoria’s

    intelligence and counter-intelligence

    operations”

“That the derby is a question of nerve,

tactics and strategy we already knew,

but frankly we could never expect that

it could turn into a scene of espionage.

However, no prisoners were taken and

no blood was shed. Once tracked down

    and caught red-handed, the opposing

side’s soldier was let free to return to

    base.”

Genoa, meanwhile, made it clear that

“no director or member of the

coaching staff sent Luca De Pra,

goalkeeper coach for the youth team,

to watch the training session at

    Bogliasco. It was a personal

    initiative.”

“This has never been done before and

is not part of the club’s modus

operandi. The club makes it known

that De Pra has been suspended with

    immediate effect pending further

    explanations.”

De Pra, who is grandson of former

    Genoa goalkeeper Giovanni De Pra,

    was reportedly chased away by

Sampdoria club officials after he was

    spotted.

His only consolation was that his team

ended up thrashing local rivals Samp

3-0 in the Serie A showdown at their

    shared stadium.

BTM ignored any such suggestion and appointed Scott Brown.

I believe Scott Brown is the major cog in our team. His inability to consistently find his team mates with a pass and his low scoring rate, frustrate the life out of me. His pass for Adam’s goal v ICT, shows he is capable. He would be at an EPL club if he could improve these aspects of his game.

Scott Brown has made himself an essential part of the Celtic team, his drive and influence are evident on a consistent basis.

He still does some terrible passes under no pressure… but thankfully less often

Bit harsh on Scott re inability to pass to a fellow Celt,IMO.

He wins the ball and drives forward most of the time. As a result,he tends to make his passes in the killer areas.

Most of our team seem content to pass in non-danger areas, which are less rigidly closed down. Thus their completion rate looks better than Brown’s.

Personally happy to see a player trying to open up the opposition than pass the buck,or let the opposition regroup.

Revealing that Peter Lawwell had suggested Robbie Keane be captain is hardly ‘dirty laundry’.

Peter Lawwell was as entitled to his opinion as any other fan, but the guy who mattered, the manager, made the decision. That is as it should be and reflects well on the Club.
