Scott Brown, Great Scottish Runner

875

You seldom hear football people speak as unguardedly as Peter Grant did to The Herald yesterday about Scott Brown.  “If somebody had offered us £4m (in 2010)?  I would have driven him down the road myself”.  The tone of Peter’s piece was supportive, though.  Our former assistant manager affirms Scott is a vastly improved performer since.  I agree.

You never really know what is going on inside a squad.  Footballers play with injuries, many find the distractions of wealth all-consuming and some are simply deployed incorrectly.  At the #19 game last week I recalled the form of Stiliyan Petrov under John Barnes, he was lost, especially when playing right back.  Bobby Petta also looked out of sorts under Barnes but within weeks of playing for Martin O’Neill both were among the most valuable assets at the club.

Neil Lennon told us last week that Scott Brown was unfit during last season’s Champions League campaign.  It’s clear that he is an incredibly more effective player when fit, but Peter Grant suggests Brown has also learned positional discipline, a subject he has previously been criticised here for.

A lot of Scott’s contribution is off the ball.  He closes space, filling the park with a presence, which is defensively important, especially on Champions League duty.  I’ve never seen Celtic’s yardage stats on players but you have to think he’ll top the list most weeks, he is the Great Scottish Runner, but all that energy needed to be harnessed correctly, which is perhaps what Scott is learning from former midfielder, Neil Lennon.

The next achievement to look out for from Scott is a marquee performance on a European stage………

Which leads us onto the Great Scottish Run.  You can still sign up for the run, and if you’ve registered already, or are still to register, you can participate in the 1254125 campaign.

The heart and soul of our community is something we cannot take for granted.  It has flourished because you, and countless thousands before you, have decided to improve the lives of those around you by getting involved in the name of Celtic.

On Sunday 6 October there is a 10k and Half Marathon.  If that is beyond you. There are family events taking place the day before.

The first thing you need to do is sign up for the Great Scottish Run, or here for one of the family events.

Once you’ve done that, you can register for the 1254125 campaign here.

Then you can create a donations page here.  Click Start Fundraising, search for Celtic Charity, setup your My Donate account).

Massimiliano Allegri has pretty much named his side for tomorrow’s match v #Celtic .Matri and Balotelli up front with Robinho or Birsa behind.

Good of him to only play 3 players against us.

However, to plagiarize Granty’s comment, If somebody had offered us £40k for Peter Grant (in 1982-1997) I would have driven him down the road myself.

Must be honest about Peter Grant. He was excellent on TV on Saturday and must have enjoyed the result because he couldn’t stop grinning.

The comments today were a bit misguided. I wouldn;t slate him too much because he is a former Celt and did play for the jersey for many years.

I do wish these former players wouldn’t give the press the negative stories they crave before our big matches tho.

I suspect he has been too honest and tried to give Broony a compliment. I can’t help think though he has done his own chances of a coaching job harm with the comments.

Some will remember me posting of my old uncle john, who was a massive influnce on my celtic thinking.

Well talk of Rose St. sparked a memory that he cherished for nearly 70 years born in 1929 he wondered why he was allowed to go to Glasgow and stay with family friends at the bells ,

Glasgow to him was the other side of the world :))

Big peter and his Mrs was all he referred to them as, on awakening on the 2nd of Jan 1939 thinking he was starting to make his way home from the Rose St.”sinlgle end” (I think).

A few yards down the Rd Big Peter produced from inside his jacket 2 celtic scarves and said today son you are going to see “THE celtic” the phrase he used when referring to us till his death at 81.

Anyway today I searched celticwiki and came up with this.

    http://www.thecelticwiki.com/page/1939

On returning to sunny mossend he lived on the experience for years telling how he felt as though he had been abroad while reliving every moment to his pals while kicking the baw between the jumpers for goals.

It was as fresh in his memory as that day in 1939 when he passed away.

when his pals moved on anyone who was and even those that were not interested heard this among many many more tales of “THE celtic”

One of my slight regrets in life are that I never took the time to get his memories on record, soooooo if you know someone get writing now:))

So 74 years later thank you “Big Peter and Rose St” you shaped many lives that day with your genorousity in taking a bhoy to his 1st game.

A love affair that lasted a life time that day even though the result went against us when he spoke of being in amongst the celtic fans I could picture it in my minds eye I still can.

He never married and when I asked him why he said when I get drunk on a Sat ..wake up on a Sunday the celtic are still talking to me:))

So when we do a good turn for a young Bhoy or ghirl we just never know the lasting effect it will have for generations,

my mate and me recently took his son to his 1st celtic game and I asked for the honour of buying him his scarf.

Decisions decisionsdecisiond 15mins later finally “That one”:)) but as the wee man wrapped it round his neck I thought of my uncle & Rose St.

sorry for rambling but it felt good

    Off to my meeting csc

I could stand somewhere outside Celtic Park before the St Johnstone game with printed resolutions for people to sign?

Anybody want to help do that? Somebody at each entry point would probably result in us getting enough share-holders to go ahead with the resolution.

  18. 1. Some recent comments ref Lustig and Matthews being excellent. I’ve being saying for ages…..to myself, my Faither and my 8 year old son! Technically gifted, good pace, THINKING players. I’d have them as definites on every team sheet – though I also share fears expressed by some ref ‘fragility’! Best teams feature ‘teams within the team’ – these guys are the perfect example of that….

    2. Couple of weeks back i was getting dispirited with all the negativity on here. Sniping even! Was lifted by recent posts though hope storm in a very wee tea cup ref Peter Grant’s comments don’t spoil the atmosphere. IMO Peter didn’t really say too much wrong – no counselling required!

    3. Broonie – while we’re on the subject. Loved him as a Hibs player. Was initially and for a good while disappointed by him in the Hoops as he seemed to go backwards. But he has been a big man, and THE big man for a good while now. His technical display in the Cup Final was top notch……though of course he immediately after was injured again. I fear for his joints in the longer term.

    4. Formation for tomorrow – Big Sammi has delivered well away from home on many occasions so would start him. But would hope that Plan B (for good times or bad!) does exist and does get used if necessary.

    5. Izzy terrifies me every time the ball goes above waist height at the back post…..love the wee guy to bits but…….

    6. Ref the Forces of Darkness – PAUL (or similar wise one) can you advise…..would a Freedom of Information request to the SFA not flush out whether Charlotte’s doc ref 5 way agreement ‘existed’ (or if not that the ‘honest mistake shredder’ had being going overtime again…..)

  22. Hello hoops!

I’m guessing this has probably been discussed to death, but I’m wondering what people think about the UCL ticket situation?

I find it quite tough to take that all the tickets have gone as a result of opening up more tickets to season ticket holders.

Don’t get me wrong season ticket holders are the lifeblood of the club in many ways, but I can’t help feeling a bit upset, mostly because it has left me missing out.

Now, I’d love to be a season ticket holder, but I live in Aberdeen and although I could afford the ticket, the additional cost of travel and trying to convince my other half that every other weekend we should spend potential savings on traveling would not go down well.

So I’m stuck money ready to buy the 3 game package but the realisation that I have to stick with TV is a downer.

Now this brings another question who deserves to go? What are the credentials required to be allowed to buy tickets? Do you have to go to every game? Do you have to watch every game? Do you have to go above and beyond the norm to do so?

Many people do all of those I suspect, I myself have watched games all over the world, got up at stupid o’clock to do so, queued outside stadiums hoping to buy a ticket and all sorts, but many do far more than me. So do I justify a ticket? Hmm maybes no but does a season ticket holder deserve as many as they could get this year?

My rant is based in fact this year has been a mare personally for me and I really wanted to get to all three games this season, it doesn’t make me any more deserving, just a bit upset really and quite gutted to have to accept that something I thought was a real possibility is now not.

I now resign myself to hoping to buy tickets from others, which I must add has always been amazing. It seems Celtic fans don’t really do the tout thing, and in fact they go above and beyond to help fellow hoops fans. Here’s hoping there’s some more of those this season!
