You seldom hear football people speak as unguardedly as Peter Grant did to The Herald yesterday about Scott Brown. “If somebody had offered us £4m (in 2010)? I would have driven him down the road myself”. The tone of Peter’s piece was supportive, though. Our former assistant manager affirms Scott is a vastly improved performer since. I agree.
You never really know what is going on inside a squad. Footballers play with injuries, many find the distractions of wealth all-consuming and some are simply deployed incorrectly. At the #19 game last week I recalled the form of Stiliyan Petrov under John Barnes, he was lost, especially when playing right back. Bobby Petta also looked out of sorts under Barnes but within weeks of playing for Martin O’Neill both were among the most valuable assets at the club.
Neil Lennon told us last week that Scott Brown was unfit during last season’s Champions League campaign. It’s clear that he is an incredibly more effective player when fit, but Peter Grant suggests Brown has also learned positional discipline, a subject he has previously been criticised here for.
A lot of Scott’s contribution is off the ball. He closes space, filling the park with a presence, which is defensively important, especially on Champions League duty. I’ve never seen Celtic’s yardage stats on players but you have to think he’ll top the list most weeks, he is the Great Scottish Runner, but all that energy needed to be harnessed correctly, which is perhaps what Scott is learning from former midfielder, Neil Lennon.
The next achievement to look out for from Scott is a marquee performance on a European stage………
Which leads us onto the Great Scottish Run. You can still sign up for the run, and if you’ve registered already, or are still to register, you can participate in the 1254125 campaign.
The heart and soul of our community is something we cannot take for granted. It has flourished because you, and countless thousands before you, have decided to improve the lives of those around you by getting involved in the name of Celtic.
On Sunday 6 October there is a 10k and Half Marathon. If that is beyond you. There are family events taking place the day before.
The first thing you need to do is sign up for the Great Scottish Run, or here for one of the family events.
Once you’ve done that, you can register for the 1254125 campaign here.
Then you can create a donations page here. Click Start Fundraising, search for Celtic Charity, setup your My Donate account).
Email me and let me know if you are having trouble signing up or need any more help, celticquicknews@gmail.com.

I was 66 years old yesterday and can with absolute certainty advise that the Sarsfield- which claimed to be about the third or fourth oldest Celtic Supporters Club in the world- ran out of John Adams ( either of Polish or Lithuanian stock, I can’t recall but my Dad knew him in the early 1930’s ) bar – The Tavern at the corner of BallatwrStreet/Florence Street. Just facing the pub, to put in some kind of social context, was a school built in red sandstone and emblazoned across the front was ” st Gabriel’s Mental Deficient School”. As a pupil at St Luke’s I shared the playground with some of those poor unfortunates.
My late father was indeed Jimmy C and never a bigger Celtic man have I yet to meet. Sarsfield did change it’s name but the link with Sean went on. We held a quite inspiring evening for Sean and my late Mum and Sean had a photo taking thus connecting all the way back to 1954 and in that wee hall above The Tavern where they had their picture first taken together.
I live in London and sometimes at my home in Granada and meet all sorts of football fans. With respect, they really are fans of their football club and good luck to them. I have discovered in life that all those things that my Dad taught me about Celtic, whether it was about their charitable roots, the injustices that they confronted ( he was a Catholic born at Bridgton Cross ) or the amazing things they might achieve are all true. If My older brother is on line he will confirm that my Dad watched the early days of European football and frequently commented that if Celtic could just find some consistency and win the Scottish League we would go on and win the European Cup ( no problem ) because then all the competing teams played football on the ground which was meat and drink to the Celtic I grew up with.
Good to talk. Good luck to the Celts in Milan tomorrow night. We are more than a football club.

ha ha That’s a cracker.
;o)
Although, please remember the “Ramsden’s Cup” is so last-season.
It is now known as the “Scottish Challenge Cup”.
For some perverse websites (e.g., BBC Scotland) the “Scottish Challenge Cup” magically becomes the “Scottish Cup”.
“Voila!” as Mr Custard would say.
“What’s the problem, let’s move on” as Mr Steakbake would say.

You are correct about Rose Street. That was where Benny Lynch our world champion boxer lived just by Rutherglen Road and near The Holly Tree pub. Rose Street changed it’s name to Florence Street. Hope that helps.
I was at a very posh breakfast in St James’ this morning and after breakfast we walked along Jermyn Street admiring the various gents clothes shops. I went a walk down memory lane and advised my host about when I was best dressed and those were the days when Max Duman the tailor on the Saltmarket( your area) would create the most wonderful made to measure suits from suit lengths brought to hive from a variety of sources- perhaps even the Holly Tree and certainly The Tavern.

Thanks Masty. When I was up for our last remarkable night at Parkhead I promised myself a wee walk round the Rose Garden but failed the task. I am off to New York on Friday , will miss the Barca game at home but will walk down there at the AjaxMilan games.
Wiggy has a light weight brain. To be tied in knots by walker is embarrassing
Liked the caller from Dublin. Blood will be boiling about a ‘tarrier’ getting through
Anyone on the early flight from Gracelands tomorrow?

Great reading that about the early days of European football – thanks!
There was (more or less) a level playing field in those days, somehing we will never see again.
When there was a level playing field, we were feared in Europe and could beat anybody on our day.
Milan are now telling us they may only have 13 fit players for the big game tomorrow night, never really thought that the Italians read the fairy tales of Ireland. we all remember the Karagandy outfit bemoaning the fact that they would only have a half empty stadium because they were forced to play 200 kilometers from their home ground, when we turned on our TV’s we see a fanatical sold out stadium, another fairy tale.
I must admit to being apprehensive on hearing that Celtic had to play six qualifying matches against teams who were half into their season, it was a terrific achievement to get into the group stages after losing some top players – two thirds of EPL teams will never see the Champions Lge.
Some of Neil’s new signings are now settled in the squad and with almost a clean bill of health his team selection will be a welcome headache.

the rose garden is now the home of a memorial to JAMES STOKES another of our (gorbals) heroes who as you probably know has a supporters club named after him..

Given the chance Peter Grants proudest moment would have been leading out The Celtic in the last 16 of the Champions League and not leading out the Scotland in a two bob friendly at Wembley
leftclick@17:13….that was a most enjoyable read, thanks !
Joe Filippis Haircut and Sandman @18:25…..AGREE 100% with both your posts.
He gave 100% every game. I can think of many games after Tommy Burns and Big Roy left when we had the Maestro, John Collins and Phil O’Donnell spreading the passes all over the place and dictating the play…..but Peter Grant was in there winning the ball back when we lost it.
He was never the most gifted, but he gave it everything.
Which is what you you’d expect if you were brought into the team in the early/mid eighties alongside Big Roy, Murdo and Tommy Burns. And od course the Maestro !!
Hail Hail
How Duffield got the jobs he got with such a shallow mind………….i think we know the answer right enough…
I think we can take Milan’s tales of woe with a pinch of salt.
Haven’t they noticed the star on our badge – we’ve been round the circuit a few times and seen all the tricks and mind games.

Talking of Benny Lynch, I used to visit his grave in St. Kentigern’s, when I lived in Lambhill.
Incidentally, the Irish band, Goats Don’t Shave, of Las Vegas in the Hills of Donegal Fame, have a song out, dedicated to Benny, called, I’m a Killer, I’m a King.
Peter Grant, a good Tim.

Has anyone else had £12 debited from their bank account yesterday by Celtic? If so, any idea what it was for?
Not a lot of money at all but I just like to know where my money goes.
