Scott Brown, party plans pooped

341

Footballers typically hit their testimonial year well after their peak, but this is arguably Scott Brown’s best season of his 11 in a Celtic jersey.  His Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards, which he received last night, were a formality.  We all knew the captain would collect both prizes.

The first thing Brendan Rodgers did when he met the media on his appointment was to cite Scott as the most important player at the club.  Brendan knew what he could get out of the captain and understood the importance of setting his expectations out early.

Scott will be 33 in June.  One day we will discuss succession, but with his form and fitness at their best ever, that time could be a several years away.

Party plans were pooped on Saturday but at least Newco won yesterday, doing us a favour by ensuring that we can take the title by our own actions on Sunday, and not potentially while watching Aberdeen and Hearts on Friday night.

Normally I would tell you that the cup final is far more important than Sunday’s league game, but I want to win the league this weekend.  A lot.

No more mistakes, Celtic.

  5. A couple of observations about Saturday.

The Ntcham substitution weakened us in the middle of the park which is Hibs strongest area and key to controlling the game.

Several times since Brendan has taken over I have raised eyebrows at his substitutions (starting with debut bhoy Sinclair for O’Connell at Tynecastle at a time they were lumping high balls in and we were under a lot of pressure in defence) and just about every time he has proved me wrong.

I thought at the time that Sinclair for Ntcham was wrong. Ntcham wasn’t having a brilliant game but he was taking a bit of pressure off Broonie in the ball winning/battling stakes against McGinn & McGeouch. You will not get that from Rogic & McGregor, different players and brilliant normally at what they give us but not great battlers. It was more baffling Since Brendan since the game has revealed that Broonie had been ill prior to the game but insisted on playing.

Another observation is the amount of times following positive results in big games, we have played really poorly in the immediate game after.

We’ve drawn at home against St Johnstone twice and Hibs after going thru to CL (Astana), Anderlecht (away) and Zenit (home).

One of our best performances of the season (3-0 v Aberdeen away) was followed by a 1-1 at home v St Johnstone.

We could only draw 0-0 v 10 man Motherwell after beating the huns 3-2 at Ibrox when we had 10 men.

And of course, skelping them 4-0 last week was followed by the Hibs defeat.

Injuries and frequent changes in team selections haven’t helped I suppose.

We invariably bounce back from any type of bad result and I believe we will continue that custom on Sunday.

Normally, I’d apologise if the response came across as being “condescending”, but I’ll just let it even up your cheeky SMSM remark to me.

Now that we’re hopefully squared-up, I have to disagree that City choked in those games. They were a bit below their extremely high levels at times in all 3 games, but in the Manure game there was no “choking”, they should have been at least 4 up by half-time. I wouldn’t even say Sterling, who was doing a fair impression of Morelos in the match choked, he’s just not a great finisher, though improving, as Pep has many of those already very good players doing.

In the second leg v Liverpool, that disgraceful refereeing decision left City to really chase the game second half, leaving gaps players like Liverpool’s were able to exploit. No way was Pep not going to go for it, as well 1-5 as 1-3 at that point.

Chokers would, after those results, never have been able to put on the display they did in the first 30 minutes away to Tottenham. The hatchets were out for Pep if they were to lose 4 in a row, and they played Spurs off the park that first half, and controlled the second. Their football yesterday v Swansea, fighting relegation, was sublime at times, with 3 brilliant goals, and Jesus even doing a fair impression of Frank Magarvey’s 1985 Cup-winning header.

With a few exceptions, they’re a young team, and the money’s there to bring experience in to help Sané, Jesús, Sterling if needed. They wouldn’t even take Brendan for Pep just now!

    I think Jose’s worried, and that’s a good thing.

Zidane’s not, he’s got enough worry trying to win the CL, because he’s probably getting his cuadernos if he doesn’t.

I think that pattern of great show followed by a stinker is the one consistent thing about this season – the aftermath of the latter being complicated by International breaks three times I think- and after Zenit in Glasgow we followed that up with two bad shows then a pretty good display at Aberdeen. I’ll take a win on Sunday followed by indifferent shows if we then really turn it on in the Cup final. But won’t bet on any of it.

Happy birthday to DavidO. I share a date of birth with the late Emlyn Hughes and Kim Appleby of Mel and Kim fame (same year with the latter)

    Tully57,

Good post. It must be because I think the same way!

We all acknowledge the difficulties we have had this season.

The almost immediate follow on form last season, due to qualifiers.

The frequent International breaks, when almost our whole first team squad were involved at various levels.(other clubs’ players got two week breaks. Ours didn’t).

On top of that was the horrendous injury list of involving virtually all our creative and attacking players. (possibly due to the above International scene).

My point is, that there are so many times that you can go to the well.

Whenever a team takes points off us and the old Them, they invariably dropped points in subsequent games.

The psychological effort in raising their game, causes a reaction “when they come down”.

Like a boxer training to peak for a fight.

Such has been our commitments over the last two years and the factors mentioned above, we are running at almost empty and can’t sustain the mental energy required to win every opponents cup final.

However, to date, we have shown that we can get up for the big ones and hopefully will do again.

During Big Jock’s time , he said that we didn’t win every game against RFC, but we won the ones that mattered.

Sorry for the laboured rant, but it is not often we get a post from Tully57, more’s the pity.

Really good post. Great though it was the Invincible run well into this season complicated things too. Every game since Brendan came the pressure seems to have been ‘MAX’. I might not have enjoyed a fair few games this season but it is preferable to where we were 8 years ago or almost all of the 90s.

Good post yourself and I totally agree with your point on our big game mentality – when we have to win them under Brendan, we do. His domestic ‘must win’ games record is incredible. Disappointing as Saturday was, the reality is that it wasn’t a must win. I never even had my lucky Celtic teeshirt on for God’s sake….that comes out for Cup finals, CL qualifiers and Sevco games.

I have a few Hibee mates and I have already told them about the reaction problem – I wouldn’t be surprised if they lose to Kilmarnock.

    All the best,
