Scott Brown, party plans pooped

341

Footballers typically hit their testimonial year well after their peak, but this is arguably Scott Brown’s best season of his 11 in a Celtic jersey.  His Supporters’ and Players’ Player of the Year awards, which he received last night, were a formality.  We all knew the captain would collect both prizes.

The first thing Brendan Rodgers did when he met the media on his appointment was to cite Scott as the most important player at the club.  Brendan knew what he could get out of the captain and understood the importance of setting his expectations out early.

Scott will be 33 in June.  One day we will discuss succession, but with his form and fitness at their best ever, that time could be a several years away.

Party plans were pooped on Saturday but at least Newco won yesterday, doing us a favour by ensuring that we can take the title by our own actions on Sunday, and not potentially while watching Aberdeen and Hearts on Friday night.

Normally I would tell you that the cup final is far more important than Sunday’s league game, but I want to win the league this weekend.  A lot.

No more mistakes, Celtic.

Yes, ole clever clogs Malor Bhoy got it as well.

I’m thinkin’ a lot about ole Pabbers this week; he’d give you the shirt off his back but the way he was wired you wouldn’t ask him to look after an ole box of gelignite.

  2. I never known such a furore over kits. I have no idea how many we sell, but I reckon we sold pretty much the same units, year in year out ,f or past 20 years – Seville season apart. As such, our contracts will ahve a maximum value with unrealistic add on that are only evet reached in those once in a generation season like 2003.

Now , I’m the entirely wrong demographic for NB for replica kits, but have to say their running gear is superb and if you watched the London and Boston Marathons over past weeks, their brand was everywhere.

FWIW I think this seasons home is the best recent kit as was the 40th anniversay top in 2007/08. Otherwise give me an 1985 top!

  3. NB one of the biggest brands in Japan, every second person in Japan wears their shoes, currently the trendiest shoe on the block in Basel with Onitsuka..

The idea that NB would drop us because we lost in Europe is the view from the goldfish bowl in my opinion or just another string to the negative violin that plays constantly on here…

If some of you guys have been to the US recently, you will see NB and Under Armour are making inroads, to challenge Nike and Adidas, huge increases in sales over last few years.I think the NB deal is the best we have ever had, can’t do better than that.HH

  6. New Balance deal is larger than last Nike deal (£30m v £25m over 5 years). New Balance is a huge brand in Asia and the US and is growing again in Europe. In the last year I’ve been in New Balance shops in Lisbon, Madrid and Milan, all of them had the latest Celtic tops for sale (along with Liverpool, Porto and Seville).

See this is where the corporate bullshit kicks in. Nike replaced Umbro in 2004 with a deal worth basic £25m. deal for five years plus add-ons depending on shirt sales and progress in Europe. They then followed that up with another £25m. plus deal.

The NB deal is “thought to be worth £30 million over 5 years” with no indication what proportion of this is up-front money and how much is contingent on other variable factors like sales and success in Europe. No-one except those on the inside can be certain that the NB deal is worth more than the Nike deal. Given the vagueness of the language regarding the NB deal, I suspect it’d probably less unless of course we win the CL then it will be stratospheric.

All I am asking is we don’t fall into the same trap as the Sevvies and believe everything we read in the media or even coining out of our own PR department.

Given that we produce fairly detailed annual accounts which are actually audited, it’s prity easy to make accurate assumptions about revenue streams such as merchandising.
