Scott Brown’s impressive body of work

271

If Scott Brown departs in the summer to join Aberdeen as Stephen Glass’ assistant manager, the body of work he will leave behind is beyond what anyone could imagine when he arrived at the club in 2007.  With 10 league titles, six Scottish Cup and six League Cup winner’s medals, his major trophy haul is greater than any Scottish club apart from Celtic and Oldco Rangers.  He is also one of the few in the modern era who could have gone to the top flight in England and chose to stay at Celtic.

He will be 36 in June and although his recent form has been as solid as ever, he no longer has the mobility to cover the ground he once did for Hibernian, Celtic and Scotland.  I will be sorry to see him go as he would be an invaluable resource to the new manager but the timing is probably right.  It would, however, be good to see him leave after raising the Scottish Cup one more time.

2020 saw us miss out on the CQN Charity Golf Open for the first year since 2005 (can’t remember why).  Ever the optimists, we have put Friday 23 July in the diary at our usual corner of Fife in the hope that by then the world will be a bit more sociable.  We will release more details as guidelines permit, but if you would like to attend, please email cqnopen@gmail.com .  Maybe see you there.

words used to describe the events that resulted in some poor soul’s death.

He was a Celtic Supporter , apparently.

    His throat was cut.

  2. A ‘National Guard’ style police force….the clue is in the first part of the name.

Eight regional police forces wiped-out at the behest of a bunch of centralising zealots for one reason only….political control.

If some think that the motives & methodology of Police Scotland are dodgy now – what in the name of God will it be like in an independent Scotland, where the vast majority will include those we see being indulged & ‘getting off’ off lightly in recent days…many of the same ‘hand in glove’ with the Orange Order, who have marched & spread sectarian hatred in our communities for one hundred years.

Our advisories will become bigger fish in a smaller pool and will be eager to express their beliefs & aspirations in the political arena. The Ulsterisation of Scotland, for many years bubbling under the surface, will get the same kind of boost as the SNP did from devolution.

The Ibrox legions & their wider constituency may not appear to favour independence, but if it happens supported by myopic converts from our ‘kind’, they will look to harness use it, in their own interests.

  3. Of course, once scotland attains independence this anti-catholic and anti-celtic violence will end. once their link with the union is broken they can stop hating catholics and celtic supporters.

I’m surprised at the lack of comment on the young lads heinous murder.

    May I echo your sentiments.

    Kamil Charyszyn RIP 💚🇵🇱

Hi TinyTim – there have been plenty comments in this house – I guarantee you that.

First though – thoughts with the boy’s family – the feeling of loss over a senseless bigoted, sectarian murder must be overwhelming.

Secondly – those animals have been hiding under their rocks for 10 years, and this is them in their full ‘glory’ now that they are ‘back’.

Wee BGFC has never really seen the true nature of the Hun when he’s been moving from child to young man – but this incident isn’t new, their carnage in Glasgow and Armadale, and other towns across Scotland and elsewhere, isn’t new.

This is what a large proportion of them are.

This is what that proportion has always been, and always will be.

Supremacist vile abuse, stabbings, throat slittings, slashings, throwing fans under the wheels of a train, wrecking towns, wrecking lives – all right out of the long-standing, unchanging playbook.

So – my conversation has been to hammer that home to the wee man – to always have your guard up when the they are likely to be on the prowl.

After a ‘Rangers’ game – win, lose or draw – stay safe, stay with hundreds of Tims, don’t get isolated, don’t walk past any groups of ‘Rangers’ fans, don’t walk near Hun pubs, get taxis everywhere.

That’s what you have to do – there are rabid killers in their midst – always has been the way – it is a part of the make up some in that fan-base.

Thank God we see none of them where we live – a few Rangers fans but no open Huns. We are surrounded by other towns and villages that are not so lucky.

  9. I have for months seen lots of comments stating that the reason we have lost the 10 ,and have only won a few important matches this season , is that the players have not been trying.

The inference being that they just need to reapply themselves, and the league title will return to Celtic Park.

I simply do not see that.

First of all let’s address the potential non triers .

Ntcham – his form has always been sporadic .

Edouard- his style has always been lackadaisical,

Bolingoli- not the brightest bulb on the tree .

I don’t consider that it is fair that any other players are accused of not trying .

I think that they have applied themselves to good level of honest endeavour.

The problem is not application .

It is that the players are lacking in aggression, physical strength , height , pace and power .

Our defenders don’t attack and win the ball in the air .

Our forwards don’t attack and win the ball in the air .

Our midfielders mostly sit off the opposition .

Don’t press and tackle to win the ball back .

It is not as simple as a lack of effort .

We need more warriors in the team .

Ajer is not a natural defender .

Yet again we see on Sunday , his failure to attack and win a header .

But the bhoy gives his all .

On the goal we lose John Joe Kenny concedes a dreadful corner from near to the half way line .

When we set up to defend the corner .

    He is marking Morelos .

    He simply switches off .

Whilst Morelos pivots to celebrate his poachers goal . Kenny is standing 4 yards from him with his hands on his head .

    Is Kenny a non trier?

    No .

But he isn’t a good defender.

Let’s get some warriors back in the team .

Men who will fight for the shirt and have the physical presence and athleticism to win top level football matches .

I have similar but not identical views I think in a better team that was better organised Eddie would be a star. Our issues stem from poor players and a lack of organisation and planning.

  13. Celtic’s principal shareholder, Dermot Desmond, today responded to a number of questions and issues raised by supporters in an exclusive interview with the official Celtic website.

When can we expect the appointment of a manager?

As with any key appointment at Celtic, there is a process which involves research, investigation, interviewing and negotiation. This process is underway and is taking place privately and when complete, the Board will make a public announcement.

Who is in charge of the process?

The Chairman Ian Bankier, Peter Lawwell and myself take a lead in the process, and naturally, the incoming CEO will also participate. Any decision made will require Board approval.

Could you give us some idea of the type of candidate you are looking for?

We are mindful of the fact that there is a huge amount of interest and speculation among our supporters and the press. However, we have to respect the privacy of potential candidates and the integrity of the process, and so I think it would be inappropriate to make comment on the type of candidate we are looking for.

What is your analysis of the season?

Firstly, the season is not over yet, as we are still in the Scottish Cup. However, my current thoughts are that this season has been extremely disappointing. Decision-making in football is not an exact science and I accept without qualification that we have made some wrong calls. We will endeavour to learn from those. However, the conjecture coming from some journalists, commentators and pundits that they foresaw the outcome of this season is entirely disingenuous in my opinion.

Regardless of whether we won the league or not this year, we knew that the 2021/22 season would be a transitional year for the team. A number of the existing squad would more than likely be departing or returning to their parent clubs, but we felt that, in order to give the team the best chance of success this year to achieve the overriding ambition, we should endeavour to retain these players, despite receiving a number of substantial bids. In so doing, we recognised that this would add to the recruitment requirements for the subsequent season. We recognise that we have under-performed both on and off the pitch and must do better.

It has been reported that you should sell your shares in Celtic as you are not a true fan?

This is a contemptible suggestion. I am as passionate about Celtic as any other supporter. My shares are not for sale. Brian Dempsey, in an article in The Times, is reported to be floating the idea that fans should own the Club and that we have reverted back to where we were in 1994. When I think about the strength of this Club today and the playing success that we have enjoyed to date, these are entirely attributable to being financially strong and being professionally managed under stable ownership. When I look back at the record of the Club since 2001, we have achieved remarkable success and encountered only a few set-backs along the way. This season has been one of them, but it does not re-create the conditions of the early 1990s, as Mr Dempsey would like to have us believe.

It is said that the Board is not fit for purpose. How do you react to that criticism?

One of Fergus McCann’s tenets was that the Club would be run professionally and that we should never return to the position he inherited where the entire existence of Celtic could be jeopardised by mis-management and unacceptable levels of indebtedness. Celtic is and will continue to be run on a meritocratic basis by the best executives available at the time. There is no member of the Celtic Board that I personally knew before they were appointed. We have maintained this policy and it has endured the test of time. In a professional manner we conduct our business behind closed doors, we don’t seek public acclaim for everything we do. Critics are in no position to judge what they cannot see.

We are very fortunate to have Ian Bankier as our Chairman and he leads a diverse and extremely talented Board. We could not have had a better CEO, nor a more committed Celtic supporter than Peter Lawwell. He has built a solid platform upon which our new CEO, Dominic McKay, can build. With every Board appointment we make, we undertake a thorough recruitment process of researching, investigating, interviewing and negotiating, unknown to all except the Celtic Board members. That will be the same process that is being implemented in recruiting our next manager.

What are your hopes for next season?

That we recruit a manager that plays football the way that all Celtic supporters want and that we give that manager the time to implement their own plans. After that, I am sure much more success will follow.

So if there was no Celtic in Scotland = there would be no Ol# Fir# = there would be no hatred of Catholicism in Scotland? Strange logic.

  20. Edouard and N’tcham in my opinion were 2 of the want aways and also 2 of the non tryers. They consistently refused to do the work, track back, tackle and work off the ball, They did not give a damn for Celtic winning games. They cannot get away. N’tcham is having a nightmare at Marseille and was a player Neil Lennon did not want to leave for £11m to Porto. Edouard was priced at £40m last season . This season we will be lucky to get a buyer for N’tcham at any money likely £2m and Edouard is now priced at £15m

Does this sound like they were trying their best?

  21. When the FOD had the chance to destroy Celtic forever, they tried their utmost to do so.

Not for them the duality of a two horse race. David Murray would never have lamented the absence of us as a fine institution, as DD did, so publicly.

They’d have used our demise or absence to achieve an unassailable position at home, and had their focus on European progress. By contrast, we sat around like a sad wee Jimmy in a relay race, waiting for the bigger boy to hand them the baton.

We’ve done that in some style this season. The resultant developments, on and off the pitch, were so sadly predictable.
