Scott Brown’s winner mentality

181

Scott Brown redefined what being Celtic captain meant during his period with the armband.  Lots of players will tell you it does not matter who is captain, or that a team needs 11 captains.  At Celtic, Scott was captain and everyone knew what that meant.

Rules were enforced and good practice deployed, even when the players were away from supervision.  He understood what is needed to keep a squad together when things go against them, and he worked with his managers to provide a structure for the group.  When you watch his successor, Callum McGregor, you can see this structure is still in place by the way he communicates with the rest of the team.

Scott’s words to the Daily Record this week are straight out of the ‘How Celtic win leagues’ textbook.  “It’s not been a perfect season, far from it, but the manager and the players have found a way to keep winning games of football. So, it’s about keeping the faith.

“If they go and win this league after all the pressure and all of the criticism of the board, the players and managers coming in and leaving, it will be the best league win ever.

“There are a lot of vultures out there on social media and podcasts who think they know how to run the club better. It’s as if people think Celtic can just go out and spend £20m on a player because the money is in the bank.

“But if you do that and then you don’t make the Champions League then what happens? The club starts going into the red.

“So everyone has to come together because that’s one of the biggest things in football,  togetherness. The fans, the players and the board need to come together for what’s left of the season and then some big decisions can be made in the summer on what direction they go in from there.”

Conceding is not in Scott’s makeup, the same is true of the many serial winners currently at the club.  This is the spirit in the dressing room right now.  It is why Martin O’Neill is so keen to have Callum McGregor on the field.  The players want this league and they believe that despite everything, they can win it.  Back them.

  2. I’ve yet to read or hear of a single Celtic fan demanding we spend £20 million on a player.

Scott clearly fancies a job at Celtic next season because he’s lazily repeated Desmond Junior’s nonsense from the AGM.

A team with togetherness & spirit & strikers is a finer thing. And makes games a tad easier (goals tend to help teams).

I’ve never heard any fan ask for a £20m signing but i’m sure DR readers lap up baseless pish. Be up to £30m next year.

    The DR, deary me.

Every team should have togetherness, those with better players, more often than not, prevail.

    Get Scratchy in the team.

People who don’t call out what everyone else clearly sees with their own eyes to curry favour with those at the top. Sorry. I don’t applaud that sort of behaviour.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Scott announced as an assistant to Robbie Keane.

This is the level we operate at with this board.

  19. An Dun – spot on, You would not put it past DD to think that a Keane/Scott ticket is the way forward.

Scott has a lot of learning to do and improving to make before he should be anywhere near the CP dugout. And then only if he is clearly the best candidate available. Same applies to Keane. Being Irish and having played for Celtic should be footnotes in the CV for any candidates, not the key to gates.

  20. onenightinlisbon on

Desmond appears to think being Irish is a pre requisite for the managers job.

Love Broony still, but… more straw men in here than in the Celtic boardroom…

£20m on player? File under pish. That ain’t even close to the criticism.

Also, even cats know not to bite the hand that feeds. So there’s that.

Let’s be clear. Whatever P67 or any other Board acolyte suggests, the conditions for togetherness are set by the leadership of the club, not the fans.

If you believe otherwise I’ve got a hotel on Kerrydale Street to sell you.

  24. might just be a rational but not beyond the realm of plausability that managers with their origins in Ireland 9and their careers in England) might actually want to be the Celtic manager at some point.

I believe this to be so, but others might just think it is the owners picks. But the manager himself must want it.

O.Neill – his own father said if the Celtic job comes up, you must take it.

Brendan – the rest of the family were match attending celtic supporters.

Neil – – Celtic daft , with a family connection to Port Glasgow and heritage in both towns.

Their crime ? Taking the job at the behest of the owner, and why wouldnt they ?

Taking it twice, wow, how very dare they, particularly those who came back and won things.

    Shame on them

Heaps of respect for our ex Captain but the thought of us ever considering far less the board sanctioning a 20m acquisition is risible.

I love the Celtic and accept that we are a successful trading entity with 2nd tier Euro ambitions.

Even if we sneak this flag we may splash 20m on multiple transfers not on one player.

    =================

I must be mellowing in my dotage, as I find myself listening to footballers now and actually thinking, often, my goodness that guy has a point. Or indeed, they pick out something that I just dont see at the games, but then on analysis their point is very relevant to something that happened in the match.

If people could get byond their own bias, maybe you learn something.

I feel Neil and Broony are very good at in match commentary, and analysis after, but the bloggers hate them even having an opinion.

I can go as far as say, and I dont believe I am, but Andy Halliday on Clyde is very good at explaining tactics and set up and patterns of play, and so on, very good actually.

Scott Allan also falls into this category.

Might be all the media training, might be they are much smarter than fans give them credit for.

I would have Brown at Celtic park no problems at all, his football experience now extends to what ? maybe a thousand games / I think he knows more than your average poster.

Meanwhile I reserve the right to say McCoist is the old old old face and voice of talking shite.
