Scott Brown’s winner mentality

181

Scott Brown redefined what being Celtic captain meant during his period with the armband.  Lots of players will tell you it does not matter who is captain, or that a team needs 11 captains.  At Celtic, Scott was captain and everyone knew what that meant.

Rules were enforced and good practice deployed, even when the players were away from supervision.  He understood what is needed to keep a squad together when things go against them, and he worked with his managers to provide a structure for the group.  When you watch his successor, Callum McGregor, you can see this structure is still in place by the way he communicates with the rest of the team.

Scott’s words to the Daily Record this week are straight out of the ‘How Celtic win leagues’ textbook.  “It’s not been a perfect season, far from it, but the manager and the players have found a way to keep winning games of football. So, it’s about keeping the faith.

“If they go and win this league after all the pressure and all of the criticism of the board, the players and managers coming in and leaving, it will be the best league win ever.

“There are a lot of vultures out there on social media and podcasts who think they know how to run the club better. It’s as if people think Celtic can just go out and spend £20m on a player because the money is in the bank.

“But if you do that and then you don’t make the Champions League then what happens? The club starts going into the red.

“So everyone has to come together because that’s one of the biggest things in football,  togetherness. The fans, the players and the board need to come together for what’s left of the season and then some big decisions can be made in the summer on what direction they go in from there.”

Conceding is not in Scott’s makeup, the same is true of the many serial winners currently at the club.  This is the spirit in the dressing room right now.  It is why Martin O’Neill is so keen to have Callum McGregor on the field.  The players want this league and they believe that despite everything, they can win it.  Back them.

Well you definitely don’t need to spend £20m to bring in a quality player. I was calling for us to sign Michael Olise in 2021 when he was still at Reading.

Palace picked him up for £8m. You wouldn’t get any change out of £150m now.

But apparently there is “no value” in the English Championship and we will only succeed by going to untapped markets to unearth hidden gems like Shin Yamada.

The funny thing is I saw he was a good player by actually – crazy as it sounds – WATCHING HIM PLAYING!

  13. Scott Brown is, with Callum McGregor, one of the two greatest Celts of this millennium. He led us through thick and thin in our era of unrivalled dominance.

When he and Kevin Thomson were at Hibs, the now dead Rangers offered a reported £4.5 million to sign both. Hibs said no, and we paid £4.4 million just for Broonie. It makes me laugh to think about what value we implicitly attached to Thomson (we were right about that, btw).

He probably won’t ever be Celtic manager, but if Scott Brown talks about the club he served and largely led for 14 years we should listen.

“There are a lot of vultures out there on social media and podcasts who think they know how to run the club better.’ I loved this. But I bet the click bait parasites out there hated it. Broonie has your number fellas…. not Celtic sites, parasites.

  15. GlassTwoThirdsFull @ 8:12 am,

Yes, it really is totally bizarre that anyone would defend our recruitment strategy of the last dozen years and the much vaunted “model”.

We have more than enough evidence and data to analyse what works and what doesn’t.

Yet, a good dollop of uncommon sense would have brought you to same conclusion ages ago.

A coach, scout, manager, even a knowledgable supporter could give you a fair assessment of a player – of course, it’s far from infallible but it certainly is a key indicator…

A world class football administrator, would not necessarily have an eye for a player…

Manager wants John McGinn – football adminstrator chooses Mulumbu.

Manager wants Ivan Toney – football administrator chooses Ajeti.

Even if we take our “model” – the frog kissing and the Board making the final decisions was not close to being fit for purpose*

    Yet consider this…

The recruitment department as part of a variety of approaches, also supports scouts and runs analyics based on “the model”.

A number of candidates are brought forward to the manager and coaches.

They sift through the possibilities, reject most but run further checks on candidates that look promising – reject more but put forward players they believe will work.

Of course, that is exactly what happened when we signed Nicolas Kuhn.

    It worked…

So how did the hierarchy and their lackeys react, when the refined model was used by the football department.

Lennoxtown was not going to go along with their little moneyball ruse, their pretendy revenue stream – for Lennoxtown it was far, far to expensive on precious resources.

They became obnoxious, spiteful, they dealt out incriminations, they became vengeful, very vengful – even if it brought our club to it’s knees.

*If the purpose was to build a quality Celtic first team squad.

    Hail Hail

  16. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM @ 10:54 pm

So we’ve bought 3 players in and around the £10m range. Eddy was a success for us and left for c£15m. Good value. Engels isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but was part of us kicking on last season and we’ve missed him this season. While I don’t think we’ll get £25m for him in summer, we’ll definitely make a profit.

Idah we took a haircut on, selling him at a lower price than we paid. His departure was an odd one given we seek to have decided not to replace Kyogo but instead switching Idah for Dolberg before the Dolberg move fell through.

While he wasn’t a roaring success here, he did deliver some big performances/goals for us and ended up with 20 goals in his only full season. To have a 20 goals a season striker now eh?

Overall, we see that the c£30m was invested in players who contributed hugely to our successes. We’ve sold two (purchased for £18-19m) for a collective £21m and Engels will bring in a profit. Turning £30m investment into a c£40m return. That strikes me as a better model than the model we pursued in the summers of 2023/24 and 2025/26 seasons where we’ll be doing well to recoup our £30m investment and have a bunch of players on the loan/hope to punt/might end up paying off cycle on the books.

  18. A team like Celtic should always play attacking entertaining football domestically.

Playing tippy tappy with the comparative resources we have is a travesty.and frankly”uncelticlike.”

It is a shocking predicament that MON has inherited and one thing is sure when apportioning blame is that the fans are blameless.

Remember this same MON in his first stint had two fantastic strikers but still signed a third and managed to play a system that incorporated all three.

I hope our appointed recruitment team are working overtime to enable our Celtic team to kick off next season with a viable strike force.

Win the double or not, anything less will be a betrayal of our faithful frustrated fans.

Give us joy in our hearts give us strikers.

  19. Analysis of Iraola tenure at Bournemouth

Bournemouth have a DOF and a Technical Director

Sadly due to Celtic FC being incommunicado with the fanbase on what is clearly an enormous reset for next season, we can only hope there has been extensive research into a new progressive model plus a rigorous recruitment process to bring the best personnel for the new model, if the club fails in providing information then you cannot blame Bloggers and Podcasters filling the void.

    2/3 Seasons for successful managers/coaches

Iraola’s future has been a talking point for months and he has kept his staff in the dark before deciding he will call time at Bournemouth after three seasons in charge. Bournemouth’s players were told of his planned exit after training on Tuesday afternoon.

The manager has maintained regular dialogue with Bournemouth’s director of football, Tiago Pinto, and their technical director, Simon Francis, without committing his future across 15 months of negotiations.

Bournemouth’s owner and chair, Bill Foley, said: “Andoni has been instrumental in shaping the direction of this club … he brought intensity, innovation, and a clear philosophy that elevated AFC Bournemouth both on and off the pitch. We are incredibly thankful for his leadership and will always have great memories of our time working together.”

While positional play models emphasize technique and psychology, Iraola’s approach leans on athleticism, work rate, and on-ball audacity. His teams aren’t a sure thing – Bournemouth’s 11th-place standing this season says as much – but they can be vastly more entertaining on their day than more rigid rivals.

The transfer market would suggest Iraola provided a salve. As his team racked up results in an expansive and proactive style, his players were increasingly in demand.

Solanke was picked to replace Harry Kane at Tottenham (£55m). Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi were coveted across the continent, landing at Real Madrid (£50m) and Paris Saint-Germain (£54.5m), respectively. After years of buying players from Liverpool with often poor returns, Bournemouth collected £40m from Arne Slot’s side for Milos Kerkez, whose defensive deficiencies were better accounted for by Iraola, himself a former full-back. Dango Ouattara, a Cherries super-sub, became Brentford’s record signing for £42m. Three months ago, City’s title hopes were rejuvenated in part by the addition of habitual entertainer Antoine Semenyo (£62.5m).
