FORMER Celtic striker Scott McDonald has been given the boot by Millwall.

The 31-year-old Aussie striker netted just three goals in 25 games for the Championship outfit this season.

Boss Ian Holloway terminated the player’s contract with immediate effect.

McDonald claimed 64 goals in 128 games during his spell at the Hoops after joining for £700,000 from Motherwell in 2007.

The frontman, who was signed by Gordon Strachan for Middlesbrough in a £3.5million deal in 2010, joined the London outfit on a Bosman deal three years later.

McDonald said: “I would like to thank everyone at Millwall and, in particular, the fans for all their support.

“I had some memorable moments here, not least scoring the winner at Charlton last season, which was certainly a good feeling.

“I would like to wish the manager and the lads the very best for the rest of the season and I’ll certainly be hoping they can move up the table and stay in the Championship.”
