Scottish Cup ghosts

502

Early in Martin O’Neill’s first tenure as Celtic manager he had a few cherished phrases.  “Rangers are the benchmark”, was his go-to in his first season, as Celtic transformed from perennial underdogs to permanent favourites.  Another was, “I’m only here because the previous manager lost to Inverness”.

That reference to John Barnes’ side’s Scottish Cup defeat lasted until early 2003, when Martin rested several first team players for the trip to Inverness in the same competition.  A win at Anfield a few days earlier was followed by an exit from the national cup.

Sunday’s Scottish Cup opponents, Auchinleck Talbot, play in the sixth tier of Scottish football.  That’s the same division Darvel were in three years ago, when they not only defeated, but outplayed Aberdeen in the same coemption.  Arrive with the wrong attitude and anything can happen.

The Scottish Cup ghost of that defeat in Inverness will haunt Martin, and Shaun Maloney, who played that night.  Liam Scales is unlikely to play on Sunday, but will doubtlessly tell the squad about his experience in the Aberdeen side who lost at Darvel.  If the focus is not right, anything can happen on a football field.

You seem so excited at the thought of them winning the league and establishing their dominance.

I’m tempted to ask the question……..

I’m also tempted to ask a question, are you a board lackie?

  4. Lucky Cody @ 1:21 pm,

Some excellent comments as soon as those Americans were involved it was obvious we were going to be challenged.

Like Mr Bloom @ Hearts, these are serious people that are not going to pass up cheap money and a chance to develop their clubs’.

We can look forward to the new normal and compete or know when to run…

    Hail Hail

  5. Apologiez for the late notice…

At new year I decided not to comment so much – on my Birthday, I decided to take a week off commenting.

At present I’m reviewing this situation and will update when appropriate…

    Hail Hail

  6. Agree that the improvement by both Hearts and sevco has exposed our complete lack of agility.

Noticeable that even the happiest of clappers tend to look back at finer times than genuinely suggest better times ahead.

Separate point, I’m not a fan of describing any Celtic employee as hated or despised, no matter how much I may not rate them.

I reported that there was hot water in one of the toilets at half-time. In fact it nearly burnt the fingers off me. Can’t remember which stand.

Good to see you posting without resorting to ChatGpt for a change.

  10. A few short weeks ago there were plenty over on FF who thought the Americans had no ambition. that there signings were all crap, that Rohl was not up to the job etc etc.

It is our self-inflicted implosion that has completely changed their outlook. If we had stayed 9-12 points clear of them they’d be writing off the season as another massive failure.

I doubt they would be splashing the cash they are now if third place was all they were playing for. We have gifted them a huge dose of hope and confidence through inaction and ineptitude.

Weirdly enough, we could comfortably spend 20-30 million and swing the momentum back in our favour while building momentum for CL qualifiers.

Will we? Answers on a postcard.

  11. Onenightinlisbon,

Firstly, I have spent many nights in that great city, been to see Lisbon derby when Sporting drew to win league in ‘24 at Estádio da Luz. Could live there — so great ndp.

Board lackey you are having a laugh mate—- I have never seen any board be so incompetent even the Boards at the Ibrox clubs. They were all screwed from what Murray done and were always treading water no matter how much money they threw at it.

We had it all yet our Board decided to weaken the team beyond recognition whilst patting themselves on the back at not reinvesting some of the £80M for the missing strikers and Kuhn.

This Board will go down in Celtic history as the Board that handed the dominant position over to a new club they helped create. Their portraits will hang in the hall of shame.

  12. Off subject, but the “resignation of the Chief Constable of West Midland is further evidence of Israeli influence.

MP’s by the score were calling for his head because the were concerned about Jewish people who lived in the area. So, every two week, Villa are at home—– any problems , no.

Police intelligence throughout the world is common among police forces, a good thing right. West Midlands police were told of the violent mobbish antics of the scum away support, so , rightly banned them, as they would if say any team with trouble making scum fans would be banned, so why the rumpus ??

  17. former Head of Recruitment at Bolton Wanderers and scouting co-ordinator at Everton, Bell-Walker confirmed the move on social media site Linked-In, where he wrote: “New adventure starts today. Delighted to be joining Celtic, a huge club with huge ambitions.”
