Scottish Cup trebles caution

144

St Johnstone have bigger fish to fry between now and the end of the season than the Scottish Cup, but their date at Hampden against Celtic next month is their chance at glory.

Celtic apart, Saints are the only side to have won the Cup more than once in the last 16 years.  Final wins over Dundee United in 2014 and Hibs in 2021 demonstrate a recent history of success we should guard against.  It’s maybe better to face the team with a recent success run out of the way before the final.

Celtic won their first Scottish Cup in 1892, but it was 2019 before the club won that trophy three seasons in a row, on their way to a quadruple treble.  Just six seasons later we are back in the semifinals aiming to achieve three in a row Scottish Cup wins again.

We should know better than to be complacent.  After winning the cup in 2004 and 2005, Clyde eliminated Roy Keane et al in 2006.  Winners in 1988 and 89, we lost the 1990 final to Aberdeen after 20 penalty kicks.

That was Aberdeen’s fifth Scottish Cup win in nine seasons.  Celtic have won the Cup six times in the previous nine seasons, but Aberdeen’s triumph in 1990 was an era ending; they have not won again in the 35 years since.  When successful runs end, it is seldom obvious at the time.

  1. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    BB @ 8:06pm

    Thank you for link.

    Just read Joe McHugh’s piece.

    Very good indeed.

Background, establish basic facts, develop basic facts more deeply, then wrap the whole thing around wider multiyear financial context.

    Dare I say it?

    Journalism?

  2. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

ex-R1ngers mascot as referee and a VAR who “loves R*ngers” (his words)

    What could possibly go wrong?

  3. lets all do the huddle on

we could have been playing in an incredible stadium along the road in Cambuslang for the last few decades but too many nay-sayers stopped it 👉🏟

  4. The Huns seemingly have a cash flow problem requiring external financing.

The timing is strange given the ‘take over’ is imminent…

  5. bigrailroadblues on

The hun are up a greasy pole parlez vous, cannae get doon tae get some dough…..inky pinky parlez vous.

  6. One doesn’t want to leave their spiritual home ,but nothing stands still.

The parking and approach roads make it impossible to extend Celtic Park.

Would Strathclyde Park be a option ,good motorway options

I know a number of friends find the difficulty of leaving after the games a problem

Who wants to be a mile away from Celtic park sitting in traffic an hour later HH

  7. We’ve had millions of words & hours of content from the Scottish media about a possible takeover at Ibrox without one quote but not a single word about the massive payday loan from Macquarie BFS against future incomes.

  8. Fanda I walk for a mile and half as it’s better for you than sitting in the car. Shawfield and Rutherglen in recent years to make it easier. We do need to come into the 21st century and a move would maybe be best.

  9. I can’t see us moving

It would cost us a billionish plus

To get the right stadium in the right place

Can’t see any council planning dept ticking enough boxes to et us move either

    Redevelop the stadium in stages

  10. We could get the directors of another club to consult on the importation of steele for either option tho lol

  11. Have a wee stint at Hampden our second home and have the full area and stadium upgraded.

    🤣

  12. Leaving Celtic Park was one of the final nails in the old boards coffin. When they floated the Cambuslang scheme it was the end for many supporters.

I have been led to believe that one of my grandfather’s was involved with the building of the original Paradise.

Back when Fergus was rebuilding Paradise myself and Dena bought our shares and season tickets. We suffered through the Hampden season and then we got to the day we stopped their ten.

I am not sure I want to see a new stadium, been through that once already, and not sure I want to see us leave Paradise.

However I am 58 years old and it is not my place to block the progress of the next generation of Celts. Should they feel the need to leave Paradise then so be it.

  13. Shades of Donnaruma in the shoot out at the Euro Finals at Wembley a couple of years back….

PSG knock out Liverpool from the CL

The better team over the two legs

  14. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

    Completely neutral.

Two teams who benefit from enormous TV income going head to head.

PSG were mugged in the first leg so justice prevailed tonight.

Having said that, could we blow the money in the bank on Salah😁

  15. For the benefit of the doubt,

This May ,God Willing,I will have been on Gods earth for 79 years .

Time moves on ,so it’s in the hands of our children/ grandchildren how our club moves on.

I am happy to leave it in their hands HH

  16. Looking at the Bayern score,it really does show how far we have come .KT,Jota,Shlupp, hopefully, another, one or two in,none of these available for our games. We will be a lot stronger.

  17. lets all do the huddle on

why has every team not got a player that can skelp a penalty like Salah?

    my pet hate!

  18. No need to move, simply improve what is already there. We have enough land around the stadium to redevelop. If developed to its potential our current home has the makings of a great venue.

Stadium expansion increase corporate seating etc. is the way to go.

Celtic could and should improve parking capacity at both the east and West of stadium I.e. multi story car parking etc to help get more cars off the streets and to help stagger enrty and exit to the stadium.

Celtic should aim to introduce a wide range of adult and child friendly activities in the envios of celtic park i.e., coffee house, food outlets, restuarants, supporters bars, fanzone, gaming areas, chill out zones, kids playpark, crazy football and other activities etc. These would help stagger fans entering and exiting the stadium envios with the bonus of making money for the club and transforming fans experience. Get the museum built and offer discounts for those with match day tickets and season tickets before and after games.

Essentially make sure folk can attend 3 hours before the game and can stay 3 hours after the game because there is lots to do safely, comfortably and pleasantly.

The local authority, scottish public transport and police Scotland could all do a far better job regards putting public transport I’m place alongside better traffic control on match days as well.

  19. For those wanting to leave paradise …shame on you …remember why and where we were formed and the fact that we are a club like no other..we move we lose our soul …absolutely not …hold the line ..the line of strength that pulls me through the fear …what would our ancestors say !!?🍀💚

  20. Good morning all from a dry and bright but chilly Garngad.

I am with Carpe Diam we stay put. Build it (old main stand refurbished and refresh the rest) they will come.

No distraction bhoys, eyes on the prize.

not the lyrics I knew BRRB.

    ……………………..

CHARLIE TULLY had a 45rpm Record with THAT Tune” A” Side///..but the Lyrics were ” Celtic are the greatest team…Parlouz Vous” on one side….and on the ” B” Side…it was TULLY again singing ” The Bhoys in White and Green” to a different tune.

    I KNOW…Cos I have THAT Record.

    LOL.

    HH.

  22. CHELTENHAM Day One…

NOT the greatest day at Cheltenham for me, but I did have Three Winners at EARLY PRICES of……8/1 and 7/1 on the same Horse that won at 5/1. I had JANGO Baie on Four different lines.

My old time Favourite Jumps Trainer ” NICKY HENDERSON” trained the good winner that Won in a spectacular LATE Surge to the Line.

The Horse ” JANGO” was almost pulled up in the Race, and the odds at one stage ” IN RUNNING” were massive at 300/1 ?

I also had another Two Winners at EARLY ODDS of 11/10, and 9/2.

Today on Day TWO of Cheltenham…Nicky Henderson has ” Chances” in Three Races.

In the last Race. ( 5.20), I also fancy WILLIE MULLINS Horse ” COPACABANA”. Its the 11/4 Favourite.

My Cash is already on…Fingers Crossed.

    LOL

    HH.

  23. ONE ” Lucky” Punter had a £5.00 PLACEPOT Bet at Cheltenham yesterday.

The Punter Won over £55,000 for his £5 Stake as the Placepot paid just over £11,000 for a £1 Stake.

It was a Big Pay Out, as Constitution Hill ( Fell) and Marjbough was ( Unplaced ) Both Horses were long odds ON.

    Well done that Punter.

    Great post with possible solutions.

However it will be hard to make GCC play ball. Their focus and agenda is to reduce the city’s carbon footprint, not to contemplate what is really needed.

And they have the Scottish government’s backing in this aspiration.

If anything, I see the transport situation getting worse with more resteictions.

I wonder if we as a club could look at our options and bring some “sensible” councillors onboard. How much revenue would the city lose if we decided to move to a m8re welcoming and practical location.

    HH.

PS : Look at the transport chaos at the Hydro concerts. Our cpuncil are clueless and anti business.
