Scottish football needs crisis

882

It was only in February this year that the proposed Russia-Ukraine joint league first reached the stage of formal meetings between clubs to discuss the viability but tonight a showcase tournament between top clubs from each country gets underway tonight.  It is hoped the formal joint league will start this time next year when the top nine teams from each country will form the Unified First League.

Despite discouragement from Fifa, Uefa have insisted only that proper procedures are followed to give their ascent to the league.  Gazprom, the Russian energy giant and Uefa Champions League sponsor, has underwritten the project with a commitment of 1 billion euros per annum.

As we know, in football, money talks, and the Russian and Ukrainian clubs, together with their national associations and Uefa, have been talked happy to make change possible.

In order to become competitive with their rivals in the west while meeting Uefa Financial Fair Play rules, Russian and Ukrainian clubs need to increase income, which the Unified First League would go a long way towards.  Uefa president, Michel Platini, has long accepted that regionalisation was a viable way forward for domestic leagues, while former powers in smaller leagues have become disenfranchised from the game’s top table.

What does it mean for us?

Well, we don’t have a Gazprom, not yet, anyway, but once Gazprom’s financial and political muscle establishes the principle of regionalisation, that principle is available to all.  Former Yugoslavia countries are already in talks, while Scandinavian countries have already had a few abortive attempts at (underfunded) regional cup competitions.

The British region.

Welsh football has managed to retain its national identity, provide an infrastructure for provincial and community clubs, while federating with the FA in England to allow their larger (sic) clubs to find their competitive level.

The model is already established for Scottish football, which has realised living with one (or two for that matter) massive club which completely invalidates their league competition as a ‘competition’ is no longer the best way to order their affairs.

Financial recklessness caused the collapse of one club a year ago while the recklessness of a Lithuanian bank has put another in jeopardy.  A handful of other top-flight clubs now realise their financial commitments, not to mention sporting objectives, are no longer viable, with or without the crumbs from the table thrown in their direction when TV cameras and a few thousand fans arrive a few times per season.

Federate with England, just as the Welsh did.  It will bring ‘competition’ back to our competitions, put thousands of everyone’s gates and provide access to viable commercial contracts.

Why are our leagues and Association not speaking to the English about this right now?  The Football League in England is every bit as much a basket case as Scottish football right now, they also need to change the structural model and, unlike the equally lunatic (English) Premier League, appear to be self-aware in this respect.

Go talk to the Welsh FA, Cardiff City, Swansea, Wrexham or New Saints FC (!) and ask them what organising their game along the lines of the Scottish model would do to them.

Scottish football must federate or it will die.  As such, if we stand on the precipice of crisis, let’s make it a good one.  It’s the only thing which will get things moving.

It’s Name the Ranger Player..Errrm Sorry Trialist Time..

“I remember going to Old Trafford and as a United fan I was quite angry with Rangers putting 10 men at the back,” Mr Trialist recalled. “They had about one shot and I was thinking ‘this is rubbish’. The away game was when Wayne Rooney scored the only goal with a penalty late on. I was angry at them because I paid all that money and there were hardly any shots on target in that game. I wanted to get a refund.”

Given the fact that the MSM have been failing to report, or in some cases deliberately misreporting, the wrongdoing, financial impropriety and all-round bawbaggery down Govan way, it comes as no surprise that the Condemns are using exactly the same tactics to punish the most vulnerable in society to pay for the greed and profligacy of the wealthiest.

So the Rangers newco are full members of the new Scottish football unitary league body.

Special treatment given to the club that was Rangers will kill the game in Scotland.

This much was realised a long time ago by Celtic F.C. when in 1930 they protested to the S.F.A. about refereeing bias. They said then:

“It is our considered opinion that if incidents such as these are to occur with increasing regularity, as seems to be the case in matches where certain teams are involved, the game in this country will be seriously harmed and made almost impossible four our club.”

Sutton agrees deal to leave Hearts

    Published on 27 June 2013

The administrators running Hearts have made striker John Sutton redundant after he failed to agree a wage cut.

First-team players Ryan Stevenson, Jamie MacDonald and Jamie Hamill have all agreed to see their salaries reduced by 50 per cent but Sutton has now been laid off after rejecting a similar arrangement.

The Englishman had another year left on his contract but is now free to find a new club, with Motherwell leading the queue.

Four other players – including skipper Marius Zaliukas – whose contracts were due to expire this month have also been made redundant.

Meanwhile, boss Gary Locke has told the Rangers fans who say they would have snubbed a proposed friendly with the administration-hit Jambos that they do not need their help.

Reports this week claimed the Tynecastle manager had approached Ibrox counterpart Ally McCoist in the hope of lining-up a fundraising match to help the financially-stricken capital club.

But a spokesman for the Rangers Supporters Association claimed the Light Blues faithful would not have attended the fixture after Hearts voted against plans to allow Rangers to re-enter the Scottish Premier League following their liquidation last summer.

Locke, though, insists he spoke to McCoist before Hearts called in administrators BDO and claims the only backing they need is from the Gorgie support.

He said: “I was asked a question about whether I’d spoken to Ally. Of course I did but it was really just to see what his pre-season plans were just because we needed a game. It was done before we went into administration and was the same as I’ve done with just about every manager in Britain.

“Ally said that Rangers had their pre-season plans in place. That was as far as it went.

“Then I picked up papers saying I was begging for a game. That’s certainly not the case. I know Ally well and I was just trying to get a pre-season game. It wasn’t a must. I’ve asked Berwick Rangers for game but they have got their plans organised but that never gets a mention because it’s Rangers.

“We will get out of this situation on our own. We have got a great fan base that will help us and we won’t be relying on anyone else.”

Hearts have lined up friendly meetings with Dunfermline and Raith Rovers and will also travel to Belfast for a four-team tournament involving hosts Crusaders, Liverpool and Celta Vigo and are keen to host a money-spinning friendly at Tynecastle on July 20.

“There’s a couple of things that I am hoping we can get sorted in the next day or so,” said Locke. “We’re hoping it will be really good opposition because it’s important we get a good game just for the preparation of the players.”

Hearts today rejected newspaper reports that sponsors Wonga.com had handed them a £1million advance to help their battle for survival.

They say the true amount is only a “significant five-figure sum” but every little helps a club £25million in debt to major shareholders UBIG and Ukio Bankas and with a £750,000 funding gap to be bridged if they are to kick-off the new season.

The club will start the season with minus 15 points and is banned from registering new players.

The current squad members are still waiting to be paid their June salaries with no indication if they will ever appear.

Locke is hopeful next month’s wages will arrive on time and insists his tight-knit squad is prepared to work for free while BDO troubleshooters Bryan Jackson, Trevor Birch and James Stephen seek new owners for the SPL side before the July 12 deadline for offers.

“It’s not great that we are not getting paid but it’s the least of our worries,” claimed the former club captain. “It’s not easy, there’s no point pretending that it is. But in an unfortunate sense, we have got used to it over the years.

“We are all trying to do our best. We have got to stick together because we all want the best for Heart of Midlothian and if it means going a month without a salary, all the boys are prepared to do that.

“You have seen the commitment of all the staff here, with people working for free and boys taking wage cuts. It’s a big ask but we are all prepared to do that. It shows we have the right people here.”
