Scottish football on solid ground

1313

Any away win by a Scottish club in the Netherlands is noteworthy but Aberdeen’s win last night is even more significant. It is a sign that a recovery is underway in one of Scottish football’s perennial underachievers. St Johnstone’s result is more of the same after last year’s achievements. Motherwell’s sorry exit is a lesson on being unprepared….

If Celtic can reach the Champions League group stage for the third successive season, there’s reason to believe our game is on solid ground after the years of excess and abandon.

Has the deal for Aquino (the mexican fella) gone dead now ? He looked like lightening.

I like what I’ve seen of McGregor so far but there is something that suggests he is holding onto someone else’s shirt.

No idea what is going on with Tony Watt. I suspect he’ll play tomorrow in Hamburg but equally I’d be surprised he was here come September.

How about a survey function so we can gauge the opinions of the CQN family and accordingly possibly refine what are seen as suitable subjects for discussion.

One of the points I posted last night …

    • Assuming we get past Legia Warsaw and into the Play Off round for CL group stage we will not know if we have qualified until the 2nd leg match, either 26/27 August – just 4/5 days before the (2 month) transfer window shuts. How will that affect the way we do our transfer business? Not ideal is it – all a bit ‘last minute’?

Sorry to all those who think this blog is the place to perpetrate their very personal, individualistic and sometimes unpalatable opinions on world politics and religious belief on the rest of us, but I will always contend this is a FOOTBALL blog (as in C.Q.N)…

Stuart McColl needs to have a good look at himself. Out last year to Kuban Krasnodar. Out this year to nobody shots from Iceland, five attempts ending in failure to reach group stage of Europa League. Is he personally responsible for our rubbish co-efficient?

That deadline scares the living daylights out of me but I guess it’s also something we have to become accustomed to as ‘value’ (i.e our budget) spreads wider in the last few days than it does now when teams don’t have to blink.

Thanks for your respondes to my earlier posts about ISIS/FGM in Iraq. I do not know that I am so sure about taking accepting any denial from ISID at face value – generally speaking if say that when it comes to the Miidke East I have difficulty in believing anything except the worst. Seems unlikely to me that it’s a story made up for no reason but who is telling the truth out there. I believe the death tolls and the evidence of incredible suffering that we are told from Gaza are true and that ISIS and other groupings in the region have views on religious, social and sexual freedoms that are repulsive to me personally. But increasingly I don’t believe much else

Way back on this place, when political argument raised it’s ugly head, I offered the old Victorian adage that religion, politics and the ladies are never discussed in polite company.

    That was well received!o

In a pub, if the conversation ground or a loud mouthed zealot dominated the conversation, you can slide down the bar to be out of earshot, immune to their pontificating.

If there is no escape, then you change your pub.

Unfortunately, on CQN, it is becoming all pervading and scrolling by has not been an option for many.

I believe that is the main reason so many good posters have abandoned the blog, some to reappear in TSFM, where debate is more measured and respectful.

The self indulgence practised on here by many has reduced CQN from being an influential voice in football, to a jolly boys, self important tabloid, which undermines the good works of many who subscribe.

Seldom does Paul’s lead articles generated much discussion, before the hobby horses are released from their stables.

I agree there have been some very informative posts on history politics etc… It’s the relentless and repetitive posts that annoy, also the personal insults that have no place here.

Last season I gave up on live updates because of politics during the match.

  24. kojo –

So your philosophy would appear to be . . .

If the media speculate about a Celtic player being courted by other clubs, or indeed if other clubs post bids for a player, we should get rid of him, regardless of whether or not he wants to leave.

We should punt him just to avoid the continued speculation.

That’s a great philosophy that, because it would mean getting rid of the precise players the media want us to get rid of.

Good job doing the media’s bidding kojo.

    Makes nae sense tae me.

  25. embramike, I agree this is primarily a football blog and I am happiest when the blog is concentrating on Celtic Football matters. However when something as awful as the onslaught in Gaza is going on it seems almost obscene to ignore it and just chat away about football. Celtic Supporters by and large are acutely aware of history and of social injustice. We have an ethos of being charitable and standing up for the oppressed. I think it is natural for Celtic Supporters to discuss this issue amongst themselves or indeed any other calamity or disaster that occurs from time to time. Obviously a thread system would solve the issue but this rather unique formula that Paul has set up means that we will continue to get a hotch potch of topics from weather, to personal problems, bereavements, new births, holidays, weather reports, guys meeting for Hootanannys, and yes of course politics and religion. Unfortunately the only answer is the ‘ol scroll on by button.
