Any away win by a Scottish club in the Netherlands is noteworthy but Aberdeen’s win last night is even more significant. It is a sign that a recovery is underway in one of Scottish football’s perennial underachievers. St Johnstone’s result is more of the same after last year’s achievements. Motherwell’s sorry exit is a lesson on being unprepared….

If Celtic can reach the Champions League group stage for the third successive season, there’s reason to believe our game is on solid ground after the years of excess and abandon.

    Gives you an idea of the potential we have in the youths. He wasn’t good enough to be kept.

     

     

    In serious though it brings a couple of things to mind. Good enough for Dundee Utd isn’t necessarily good enough for Celtic but also that some players don’t flourish until the pressure of the bigger stage is upon them. However how many risks can you take to give these boys a chance, putting them in to the wrong game could just as easily shatter their career as enhance it.

    Bobby, I’ve been watching CFC since 1979, just a couple of games before the 4-2 game. Regarding the lack of quality on the field, I do feel technically the players are better than at any time other than the MON era, which was financed with debt. Jansen’s team was possibly better also.

     

     

    Compare Moyes, Whyte, Rogan, Sneddon to the current defence. Falconer, Wayne Bigbaws, Jim Melrose to our strikers. Peter Grant, Owen Archdeacon, Brian McLaughlin etc to our current midfield.

     

     

    We will never replace Blessed Paul McStay, Danny McGrain, but mostly the current quality is better than the vast majority of the last 35 years.

     

     

    Such was the quality of last year’s CL group I don’t think we disgraced ourselves, Barca apart. I felt we totally controlled Karagandy at home (best game last season) even though they hit bar.

     

     

    2010 euro campaign was the result of a rookie manager and trying to bed in a new team, after the Mowbray debacle.

     

     

    I grew up with CFC being beaten in Europe by the first team anyone had heard off, or even Xamax, Zagreb, partizan, Timosara.

     

     

    I never took CFC quality for granted. Until Henke arrived we did virtually nothing in Europe, were dominated by a couple of provincial clubs in the eighties, poor in the 90’s. Today’s team seems positively flamboyant compared to previous.

     

     

    IMO, outwit the MON era, VVD is as good a centre half as we have had in 35 years, Reiper, Elliot and Aitken apart. Izzy, Lustig, as good as any fullbacks.

     

     

    Up front we are defo missing star quality.

     

     

    Just my opinion.

    The issue though is much broader than this blog.

     

     

    The Green Brigade insist make political statements at our games.

     

     

    That issue often divides the support as much as politics/religion does on here.

     

     

    Each side claim that they have the club’s heritage at heart.

     

     

    That then is subsumed into a pro or anti board stance, views on the OBFTC, and inevitably a stance on every other issue raised by the Green Brigade. Some issues are not GB led, such as the Independence discussions, but you get my point.

     

     

    Earlier today, BMCUWP suggested that divergent views were fine unless they were unacceptable, which led to the question from Just another tim: who gets to decide what is unacceptable?

     

     

    Sometimes it is easy to scroll on by, but at other times, if the comment touches a nerve then I am tempted to respond. It seems though that all opinions just need oxygen to survive and so I try to resist responding. I know I miss some diamonds at times, but that is the price I am prepared to pay.

     

     

    A survey is a possibility, but much like yon referendum it might just open up a can of worms with little benefit to the regular lurker/drive by poster.
